Wayne is a town in Kennebec County, Maine, United States. Wayne is included in the Lewiston-Auburn, Maine metropolitan New England city and town area. The population was 1,129 at the 2020 census. [2] The town was named after Revolutionary War General Anthony Wayne. [3] During the summer, Wayne is home to Camp Androscoggin. A popular recreation spot in central Maine, Wayne is part of the Winthrop Lakes Region. The town is included in the Augusta, Maine micropolitan New England City and Town Area. and included in the Lewiston-Auburn, Maine metropolitan New England city and town area.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 25.63 square miles (66.38 km2), of which 19.26 square miles (49.88 km2) is land and 6.37 square miles (16.50 km2) is water. [1] The Androscoggin Yacht Club is located in Wayne on Androscoggin Lake, at the foot of the road over Morrison Heights. [4]

As of the census [6] of 2010, there were 1,189 people, 514 households, and 358 families living in the town. The population density was 61.7 inhabitants per square mile (23.8/km2). There were 848 housing units at an average density of 44.0 per square mile (17.0/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.9% White, 0.2% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 0.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.8% of the population.
There were 514 households, of which 24.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.9% were married couples living together, 6.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.9% had a male householder with no wife present, and 30.4% were non-families. 24.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.68.
The median age in the town was 49.1 years. 19.3% of residents were under the age of 18; 5.3% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 18.1% were from 25 to 44; 40.6% were from 45 to 64; and 16.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 50.5% male and 49.5% female.
