As of July 1, 2019, Madison's estimated population of 259,680 made it the second-largest city in Wisconsin by population, after Milwaukee, and the 82nd-largest in the United States. Madison is the fastest-growing city in Wisconsin. The city forms the core of the Madison Metropolitan Area which includes Dane County and neighboring Iowa, Green, and Columbia counties for a population of 654,230. Madison is named for American Founding Father and President James Madison.

Alden Sprague Sanborn was an American lawyer, politician, and judge. He was the 7th Mayor of Madison, Wisconsin, serving from April 1867 to April 1868, and served as County Judge for Dane County, Wisconsin, from 1878 until his death in 1885. Sanborn also represented Dane County in the Wisconsin State Assembly for four sessions, and served as district attorney in Brown and Outagamie counties.

This was the only state in the 2018 United States gubernatorial elections to elect a Democratic governor while voting more Republican than the national average.
Satya Rhodes-Conway is an American politician. She was a member of the Madison Common Council between 2007 and 2013. In 2019, Rhodes-Conway was elected Mayor of Madison, Wisconsin. She is the first out lesbian and first openly LGBTQ person elected to that office, and only the second woman to hold the post.

A Democrat, he is a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly representing the 48th assembly district, comrpising the northeastern half of the city of Madison. He is the first Muslim member of the Wisconsin Legislature. Before his election to the Assembly, he served six years on the Madison City Council, and was president of the City Council from 2018 to 2019.
