The 2000 United States presidential election in Wisconsin took place on November 7, 2000, and was part of the 2000 United States presidential election . Voters chose 11 representatives, or electors to the Electoral College , who voted for president and vice president .
Wisconsin was won by Vice President Al Gore by a slim 0.22% margin of victory, a mere difference of 5,708 votes. Victories in Milwaukee County , home of Milwaukee ; and Dane County , home of Madison contributed to his victory. This was the first time since 1988 , and only the second time since 1960 , that Wisconsin did not vote for the overall winner of a presidential election. This was the last time that Wisconsin voted to the right of neighboring Iowa and voted for the winner of the national popular vote until 2008 .
