The World Professional Darts Championship is one of the most important tournaments in the darts calendar. Originally held as an annual event between 1978 and 1993, players then broke off into two separate organisations after a controversial split in the game. Each organisation, the British Darts Organisation (BDO) and the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) then arranged their own World Championships, the former in January the latter in December. As a result, there was no longer a unified world champion in the sport for nearly three decades.

The British Darts Organisation (BDO) was a darts organisation founded on 7 January 1973 by Olly Croft. Made up of 66 member counties, it oversaw professional, semi-professional and amateur darts competitions in Britain. The BDO was a founder member of the World Darts Federation in 1974. It also staged a World Professional Darts Championship from 1978 to 2020.

The World Masters is one of the longest-running and most prestigious of the BDO/WDF tournaments, which began in 1974. The tournament was originally sponsored by Phonogram before changing its sponsor in 1975 to darts board manufacturer, Winmau. The World Masters was originally contested as the best of 5 legs before later transitioning to the set format.

The Darts World Rankings are systems designed to determine a list of the best darts players in the world based on their performances in past tournaments.

The Finder Darts Masters was a darts tournament held in Egmond aan Zee, Netherlands, sanctioned by the British Darts Organisation and the World Darts Federation, running intermittently under several different names from 1995 to 2018.

The World Darts Federation (WDF) is a sport governing body and a tournament organiser for the game of darts. It was formed in 1974 by representatives of the original fourteen founding members. Membership is open to the national organising body for darts in all nations. The WDF encourages the promotion of the sport of darts among and between those bodies, in an effort to gain international recognition for darts as a major sport. The WDF is a full member of Global Association of International Sports Federations, which is the governing body for international sports federations.

Martin Fitzmaurice was an English darts personality. He operated for the game's governing body in the United Kingdom, the British Darts Organisation, from 1985 to 2013, until he resigned and was replaced by Richard Ashdown in April 2013.

Terry "The Titan" Hayhurst is a Canadian former professional darts player from Brantford, Ontario. His accomplishments include winning the Canadian Open in 2010 and 2012. In 2011, he was ranked #12 in the world and #2 in the Americas by the World Darts Federation.

The Virginia Beach Dart Classic is a Steel-Tip darts tournament established in 1970. The tournament is currently organised by the Tidewater Area Darts Association which is itself affiliated to the American Darts Associations (ADO). The event is a BDO category C ranked tournament the youth tournament is a ranked event of the WDF.

The 2019 One80 L-style World Masters was a major tournament on the BDO/WDF calendar for 2019. It took place from 23 to 28 October at the Circus Tavern in Purfleet, Essex, which hosted the PDC World Darts Championship from 1994 to 2007.

The WDF World Darts Championship is a World Championship in darts organised by the World Darts Federation. Following the collapse of the British Darts Organisation in 2020, it essentially replaces the BDO World Darts Championship which was last held in 2020.
