Aiolornis incredibilis is an extinct species of teratorn bird from the western United States. Only fragmentary remains have been found, which are dated between the Early Pliocene (Zanclean) and Late Pleistocene. First described as Teratornis incredibilis by Howard in 1952 based on a cuneiform bone, the species has been moved to the new genus Aiolornis by Campbell, Scott and Springer in 1999. The generic name is derived from the ancient Greek words aiolus and ornis. Aiolus refers to the Greek god of the wind, and ornis means "bird". The specific name incredibilis means ‘incredible’. A. incredibilis is lesser-known than its close relative, Teratornis merriami, even though A. incredibilis was significantly larger. It presumably became extinct at the same time as the other megafauna in North America.

History of discovery

The first Aiolornis material, described in 1952, was a cuneiform bone found in Smith Creek Cave, White Pine County, which is located 34 miles north of Baker, Nevada. The fossil was found to be from the Quaternary, and similarities with Teratornis merriami were noted in the description, hence the usage of the name T. incredibilis in the original description of the bird. The specimen was deemed distinct enough to warrant the naming of a new species based on its sheer size and other differences. The holotype specimen (on which the species is based) is around 40% larger than the same bone in T. merriami. [1]

In a redescription published in 1999, the species was moved into its own genus, Aiolornis, as A. incredibilis. Prior to this redescription, four additional specimens had been referred to T. incredibilis, although they were not diagnostic. There is also a lack of certainty on whether all of this material actually belongs to Aiolornis, due to the fragmentary nature of the fossils and the large timespan they represent. The fossils include the proximal end of an ulna, the distal end of a radius, the fragmentary proximal end of a carpometacarpus, and the anterior portion of a beak. [2]

The 1999 paper also refers a new bone to the species, a partial humerus (upper arm bone). The specimen was collected at Quintin Lake in April 1993, which is located approximately 1 km northeast of Murrieta, Riverside County, California. It differs from that of T. merriami in multiple aspects. The many differences between A. incredibilis and T. merriami supported the erection of the new genus Aiolornis for the former. [2]

Description

Aiolornis is classified as a teratorn, and its past affiliation with the much better preserved Teratornis allows for inferences about its appearance. It is usually depicted as a larger version of Teratornis. Aiolornis differs from Teratornis in a number of places, most obvious of which is size. Its wingspan is estimated to have been between 5 and 5.5 meters, and its weight at around 23 kg, which make it one of the largest, if not the largest, flight-capable bird from North America. [2]

The holotype material differs from that of T. merriami in a few key ways. For instance, present on the os carpi ulnare of Aiolornis is a prominent ridge, which forms the end of the facies articularis ulnaris and extends further beyond this, coming close to the attachment point for the ulno-ulnocarpal ligament. This attachment point is also proportionally longer than the same point in Teratornis, and it protrudes more prominently from the bone. The facies articularis ulnaris is also slightly more concave than that of Teratornis, with the dorsal rim lower than the ventral rim. [2]

The partial humerus described in the 1999 paper also differs from that of T. merriami and that of Argentavis magnificens in a number of ways, but most prominently in the fact that the facies dorsalis is fairly flat for the length of the attachment of the M. latissimus dorsi, becoming slightly convex near its distal end, and that the facies posterioris and facies dorsalis meet at a near right angle, with line of insertion of the M. latissimus dorsi following a well-defined "corner" of the margo anteriodorsalis. Classification

Aiolornis is classified within Teratornithidae, [1] [2] which is a family in the order Cathartiformes. The order also includes the extinct and extant New World vultures.

Cathartornis is an ancient bird of the Teratornithidae family. It lived somewhere between 23 million years and 10,000 years ago. The only evidence of the bird's existence is a few bones. Its remains were documented in 1910. Cathartornis was described on the basis of 2 tarsometatarsi, 1 complete and 1 containing only the distal end, recovered from the Pleistocene La Brea Tar Pits in Southern California. Since then, no other fossils have officially been referred to the taxon, though some fossils assigned to Teratornis could be from Cathartornis and unpublished remains have been mentioned.

Scythosuchus is an extinct genus of rauisuchid. Remains have been found from Olenekian-age Lower Triassic beds in Russia, hence the name meaning 'Scythian crocodile'. The type and only species is S. basileus, described in 1999. Scythosuchus was between 2 and 3 metres long, and relatively heavily built. It is known from a partial skull, much of the spine, a fragment of the humerus and most of the hind leg and foot. It may have been the same animal as Tsylmosuchus donensis.

Aquila bullockensis is an extinct species of large true eagles in the family Accipitridae. A. bullockensis is related to the living species A. audax to which it might be ancestral. The species is solely known from the distal end of a right humerus found in the Middle Miocene, Bullock Creek deposits in Australia. A. bullockensis is the oldest confirmed record of the genus Aquila in Australia, and possibly in the world.

Oscaravis olsoni, of the teratorn family, was a large, predatory bird that roamed the territory that is now modern-day Cuba before going extinct at the end of the Pleistocene era. Previously classified as Teratornis olsoni, it has recently been granted a new genus due to its ecological isolation from others in the teratorn family, as well as differences in size and possibly behavior. Although no exact measurements can be stated, due to recent archaeological findings and the comparison of O. olsoni bone lengths with that of other teratorns, it has been concluded Oscaravis olsoni would have had a body bigger than Taubatornis campbelli but smaller than Cathartornis gracilis.

Kunpania is an extinct genus of dicynodont therapsid from the Quanzijie Formation of Xinjiang, China. The type and only species is K. scopulusa, and it is known only by a single incomplete specimen including parts of the skull and forelimb. Since its initial description in 1978 by palaeontologist Ailing Sun, it has sometimes been considered to be another species of Dicynodon by other researchers, or potentially undiagnostic. However, a redescription in 2021 reaffirmed its distinctiveness, including a uniquely well developed muscle attachment on the humerus. Kunpania is perhaps the oldest known member of the derived dicynodont group Dicynodontoidea, potentially dating to the Middle Permian period during the Capitanian, and so may fill a knowledge gap in the history of dicynodont evolution.

Tereingaornis moisleyi, also referred to as Moisley's penguin, is a genus and species of extinct penguin from the Middle Pliocene of New Zealand. It was slightly smaller than the extant Fiordland crested penguin. It was described by Ron Scarlett in 1983 from fossil material found by William Moisley near Te Reinga Falls on the Wairoa River, in the Hawke's Bay Region of the North Island. Another specimen was found later at Waihi Beach, Hawera, on the South Taranaki Bight. The genus name Tereingaornis combines the name of the type locality with the Greek ornis ("bird"); the specific epithet honours the discoverer of the fossil.

<i>Paradolichopithecus</i> Extinct genus of Old World monkeys

Paradolichopithecus is an extinct genus of cercopithecine monkey once found throughout Eurasia. The type species, P. arvernensis, was a very large monkey, comparable in size to a mandrill. The genus was most closely related to macaques, sharing a very similar cranial morphology. The fossils attributed to Paradolichopithecus are known from the Early Pliocene to the Early Pleistocene of Europe and Asia. The East Asian fossil genus Procynocephalus is considered by some to represent a senior synonym of Paradolichopithecus.

Dryornis, also called the Argentinian vulture, is an extinct genus of cathartid, known from Argentina. The genus contains two species, D. pampeanus and D. hatcheri.

Janavis is an extinct toothed bird, belonging to the Ichthyornithes, from the Late Cretaceous of Belgium. The genus has one named species, Janavis finalidens that was discovered in the 1990s, reported in 2002, and described in 2022. Recovered almost simultaneously from the same area and age as Asteriornis maastrichtensis, then the oldest known modern bird, it provides information on the evolution and divergence of basal and modern birds, especially on the evolutionary modifications of bird skulls.

<i>Miodytes</i> Extinct water bird

Miodytes is a fossil genus of grebe known from a nearly complete specimen from Valjevo Basin, western Serbia known from an almost complete right wing skeleton. It contains a single species, M. serbicus.
