Arddleen railway station served the village of Arddlin in Powys, Wales, sited on the former Cambrian Railways between Oswestry and Welshpool. Served by the Oswestry and Newtown railway, it was situated near the English border.
Although the Cambrian main line through Arddleen was opened for service on 1 May 1860, Arddleen station did not come fully into service until 1863. The line was built by the Oswestry and Newtown Railway, then absorbed into the Cambrian Railways, and it became part of the Great Western Railway during the Grouping of 1923. The line then passed to the Western Region of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948. Arddleen was reclassified as a Halt in June 1954 when the original station building, which incorporated a small booking office and waiting room, was replaced by a simple wooden shelter. In the same year the platform may have been rebuilt showing the fancy stone facing on the platform frontage.
Situated between Four Crosses and Pool Quay, the Halt came under the control of the Station Master at Four Crosses. Arddleen Halt was 154 ft in length and was sited on the up side of the single running line. The platform was constructed of fabricated stone block, in-filled and laid with a tarmac surface.
Access to the halt was from a small lane that ran parallel to the towpath of the Montgomeryshire Canal and the railway. A stone built house stood adjacent to the railway and was called Station House, but with no railway architectural features it bore no original connection to the railway; instead it was connected with the canal which was opened in 1821, having been authorised as early as 1794. The house was however used as family accommodation for railway personnel from the opening of the railway until its closure in 1965. It is known that until the early part of the 20th century there was a Station Master resident in the house. Under the GWR Directive 'Halts Where Staff are Not Employed', it was the responsibility of the Station Master at Four Crosses in later years to visit the halts which were under his supervision to see that the premises were in proper condition and that notice boards, gates, lamps and shelters etc. were properly looked after. In later years there were very few scheduled stops at Arddleen, although request stops were generally possible. There was almost an hourly service between Welshpool and Oswestry but only one or two of these trains were timetabled to stop at Arddleen. Some trains only stopped on a few specific days of the week. Arddleen Station (Halt) was closed to passengers on 18 January 1965 by the British Railways Board as part of the closure of the section from Oswestry to Buttington Junction.
The single platform and adjacent original Station House (now a private dwelling) remain on the site. The Station House has no railway architectural features, and probably pre-dates the building of the railway, probably being related originally to the Montgomeryshire Canal which runs alongside. The railway bridge just beyond the station, looking towards Pool Quay, was demolished and the cutting filled in during the 1980s as part of the straightening of the A483 road towards Welshpool. The canal bridge at the entrance to the station access lane was also demolished at that time.
The Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway (W&LLR) is a 2 ft 6 in narrow gauge heritage railway in Powys, Wales. The line is around 8.5 miles (13.7 km) long and runs westwards from the town of Welshpool via Castle Caereinion to the village of Llanfair Caereinion.
Welshpool is a market town and community in Powys, Wales, historically in the county of Montgomeryshire. The town is four miles from the Wales–England border and low-lying on the River Severn. The community, which also includes Cloddiau and Pool Quay, has a population of 6,664, with the town having 5,948. There are many examples of Georgian architecture within the town. Powis Castle is located to the north.
The Montgomery Canal, known colloquially as "The Monty", is a partially restored canal in eastern Powys and northwest Shropshire. The canal runs 33 miles (53 km) from the Llangollen Canal at Frankton Junction to Newtown via Llanymynech and Welshpool and crosses the England–Wales border.
Welshpool railway station is a railway station on the Cambrian Line in Powys, mid-Wales. It was first opened in August 1860, but the current station was opened in May 1992 to allow for track re-alignment, the same day that the original closed, and is a short distance from the original. The station serves the town of Welshpool, as well as its surroundings.
Morfa Mawddach railway station is an unstaffed station located on the outskirts of the village of Arthog in Gwynedd, Wales, on the Cambrian Coast line between Machynlleth and Pwllheli. Built by the Aberystwith and Welsh Coast Railway in 1865, it was formerly the junction station for the Ruabon to Barmouth Line. Since the closure of the Ruabon to Barmouth line in 1965, it remains open, as a minor station on the Cambrian Line.
Whitchurch (Shropshire) railway station serves the town of Whitchurch in Shropshire, England. The station is 18¾ miles (30 km) north of Shrewsbury on the Welsh Marches Line. The station is maintained and served by Transport for Wales.
Four Crosses railway station was a station on the former Cambrian Railways between Oswestry and Welshpool.
Strata Florida was a railway station in Wales, on the former Carmarthen to Aberystwyth Line; it served the villages of Ystrad Meurig, Pontrhydfendigaid and Ffair Rhos. The Manchester and Milford Railway (M&MR) opened from Pencader to Aberystwyth on 12 August 1867; the line went into receivership from 1875 to 1900. The site is now part of the Ystwyth Trail, a shared-use rail trail between Aberystwyth and Tregaron.
The Llanidloes and Newtown Railway (L&NR) was a railway company between Llanidloes and Newtown in Montgomeryshire, Wales. It was promoted locally when plans for trunk railways passing through the locality were cancelled; local people saw that a railway connection was essential to the flannel industry in the district. The 17-mile (27 km) line opened in 1859, and at first was isolated from any other railway, but from 1861 it became connected to Oswestry by an allied railway company, and other companies also connected to it. From 1864 the company was incorporated into the new Cambrian Railways company.
Abermule railway station served the village of Abermule in Wales. Served by the Oswestry and Newtown railway, it was situated on the English border. Until 1956 it was the junction for the short branch to Kerry, which had a passenger service until 1931 but was largely built for the local timber traffic.

Oswestry railway station is a Grade II listed heritage railway station in Oswestry, Shropshire, England. It was closed when passenger services were withdrawn in 1966. The station building today is used as commercial premises, although the Cambrian Railways Society are restoring it.
The Oswestry and Newtown Railway was a British railway company that built a line between Oswestry in Shropshire and Newtown Montgomeryshire, now Powys. The line opened in stages in 1860 and 1861. It was conceived to open up the area to rail transport, when local opinion formed the view that the trunk railway companies would not do so. Subscription money for the construction proved very difficult to generate. It was the action of a contractor partnership, Davies and Savin, in agreeing to accept shares as the majority of their payment for construction work, that saved the company from failure.
The Llanfyllin Branch was a railway line extension of the Oswestry and Newtown Railway to access the limestone resources within the Llanfyllin area; it opened in 1863.

Ciliau-Aeron Halt was a small railway station on the Aberayron branch of the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth Line in the Welsh county of Ceredigion serving the hamlet of Ciliau Aeron and the nearby estate of Tyglyn. Opened by the Lampeter, Aberayron and New Quay Light Railway, the branch to Aberayron diverged from the through line at Lampeter.

Buttington railway station was a station in Buttington, Powys, Wales. The station was opened in November 1860, several months after the line that served it. A second line - the jointly operated Shrewsbury and Welshpool Railway reached the station in January 1862. It was substantially rebuilt in 1893 by the Cambrian Railways, when the route west to Welshpool was doubled.
Forden railway station was a station in Forden, Powys, Wales. The station was opened on 10 June 1861 by the Oswestry and Newtown Railway on the section of line between Welshpool and Newtown. The station originally had a single platform on the western side of line, but in 1897 a passing loop was installed here along with signal box and second platform. After the 1923 Grouping, the Great Western Railway took over operation of the line and two year later they doubled the section eastwards to Welshpool to add additional capacity on what had become a busy main line. Service levels were modest throughout this period, with the 1922 timetable having five eastbound and four westbound trains calling Mon-Sat and no Sunday service.
