The Cruel World Festival is an annual music festival held at the Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. It was founded in 2020, and is organized by Goldenvoice, a subsidiary of AEG Presents. The festival revolves around the new wave, post-punk, gothic rock and alternative rock genres. In the park, several stages continuously host live music.

Contents

Cruel World Festival showcases popular and established musical artists as well as reunited groups. The first edition on May 14 and 15, 2022, featured Morrissey, Bauhaus and Blondie among more than 25 artists. A second edition of the festival took place on May 20, 2023, featuring Siouxsie and Iggy Pop as headliners with a run of 20 other artists including Billy Idol, the Human League, Love and Rockets and Echo & the Bunnymen. The 2023 edition was ended early in the night due to nearby lightning strikes. Siouxsie's headlining set that evening was rescheduled for the following day, with Iggy Pop and Gary Numan also returning. Duran Duran headlined the third festival on May 11, 2024.

The fourth edition will take place on May 17, 2025, featuring headlining acts New Order and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

History

On February 11, 2020, Goldenvoice announced the inaugural Cruel World Festival set to take place on May 2 at the Dignity Health Sports Park grounds in Carson, California, outside of Los Angeles. [1] The festival was first postponed to September due to the worldwide pandemic, then canceled entirely in May. [2] In June 2021, Goldenvoice announced that the inaugural festival would finally take place on May 14, 2022, with minor lineup alterations and a new site at the Brookside Golf Course at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. [3]

The inaugural edition featured more than 25 bands, with headlining sets by Morrissey, Bauhaus and Blondie and appearances by Devo, the Psychedelic Furs, the Church and others. [3] The festival was a way to "revive the '80s", with "some of the biggest names" from the 1980s new wave and gothic rock scenes. [4] As tickets sold out for the first day, a second day with the same line-up was added for Sunday, May 15. [5] Los Angeles Times wrote: "Cruel World time-travels back to that moment when synthesizers were supplanting guitars and rebel teens born into baby boomer hegemony were hungrily seeking new sounds, ideas and hairdos". [4]

In January 2023, the second edition of Cruel World Fest was announced for Saturday, May 20, 2023, to take place at the same location, with tickets going on sale on Friday, January 27. [6] Siouxsie and Iggy Pop were announced as headliners, joined by Billy Idol, the Human League, Love and Rockets, Echo & the Bunnymen, Gary Numan, Gang of Four and many others. [6] It was Siouxsie's first United States performance in 15 years [6] and her only confirmed U.S. performance of the year. [7] It was also the first Love and Rockets set in 15 years (with Bauhaus having broken up between festivals) and Daniel Ash stated that it would be the beginning of the final ever Love and Rockets tour. [6] [8] Near the end of the night, during Pop's performance and before Siouxsie's scheduled set, the festival was ended abruptly by authorities, due to "extremely severe weather conditions" that included lightning strikes. [9] Early in the morning of May 21, the promoters of the festival announced on social media that Siouxsie and Pop would return later that day, "with Siouxsie performing an extended set." [10] Sunday also featured Numan returning for another performance, as well as a set from Club Doom Dave. [11]

The third edition of Cruel World took place on May 11, 2024, headlined by Duran Duran and featuring sets by Blondie, Interpol, Adam Ant, Simple Minds and others. [12] Gary Numan returned to the festival to perform his 1979 album The Pleasure Principle in its entirety. [12] Ministry performed a set consisting of songs from their first two albums, With Sympathy (1983) and Twitch (1986), including many songs not performed since the 1980s. [13] Tones on Tail performed their first official set since 1984. [14] The Alarm and Balvanera cancelled their appearances, the former due to frontman Mike Peters' cancer diagnosis. [15]

On October 21, 2024, the fourth edition of the festival was announced for May 17, 2025, featuring headlining acts New Order and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Other artists in the lineup will include Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Garbage, the Go-Go's, Death Cult, 'Til Tuesday, Madness, Buzzcocks, She Wants Revenge and Alison Moyet, as well as a returning slot for Devo. Adam Ant and the Motels cancelled and were replaced by Squeeze and Berlin, respectively. [19] Lightning delays interrupted Iggy Pop and The Human League, which lead to the end of their performances on May 20th and meant Siouxsie was unable to perform as scheduled [20] . Siouxsie and Pop, along with Numan, returned the following day for a second show. [11]

Daniel Gaston Ash is an English musician, songwriter and singer. He became prominent in the late 1970s as the guitarist for the goth rock band Bauhaus, which spawned two related bands led by Ash: Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets. Recently, he reunited with bandmate Kevin Haskins to form Poptone, a retrospective of their respective careers, featuring Kevin's daughter Diva Dompe on bass. He has also recorded several solo albums. Several guitarists have listed Ash as an influence, including Dave Navarro of Jane's Addiction, Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, Hide of X Japan and John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Kevin Michael Dompe, born and best-known as Kevin Michael Haskins, is an English drummer, best known from the British rock group Bauhaus. He was also a member of Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets.

Love and Rockets are an English rock band formed in 1985 by former Bauhaus members Daniel Ash, David J and Kevin Haskins after that group split in 1983. Ash and Haskins had recorded and performed in another band, Tones on Tail, between 1982 and 1984.

Modern English are an English new wave/post-punk band formed in 1979 in Colchester, Essex, England. They are best known for their songs "I Melt with You", "Hands Across the Sea" and "Ink and Paper". The group disbanded in 1987, but re-formed two years later and then disband again in 1991. They reunited again in 1995 and have continued in various lineups since then.

The Osheaga Music and Arts Festival is a multi-day music festival in Montreal, Quebec, that is held every summer at Parc Jean-Drapeau on Île Sainte-Hélène. It was originally held on 1 August 2009 on Folkestone seafront as a one-day festival with Feeder, Gary Numan and Ash as headliners. In 2010 it moved to Port Lympne Wild Animal Park and grew to a weekend camping festival held from 6–8 August. The headline artists included Glassjaw, Gallows, Sepultura and the Subways, and the festival provided a variety of rock music genres including punk rock, alternative rock, hardcore punk and heavy metal along with extreme sports displays and state-of-the-art thrill rides.

Trapped Under Ice is an American hardcore punk band from Baltimore, Maryland that was formed in 2007. Since then they have released an EP and three full-length albums. Taking influence from New York hardcore, the band has toured all over the world and was signed to Reaper Records. On August 11, 2013, Trapped Under Ice played its last show at Philadelphia's The Electric Factory at This Is Hardcore Festival 2013. The band announced their reunion in early 2015. In 2017 they released their third LP, Heatwave, on Pop Wig Records.

Molchat Doma is a Belarusian post-punk band from Minsk, formed in 2017. Their current lineup consists of Egor Shkutko (vocals), Roman Komogortsev, and Pavel Kozlov. Their style has been described as post-punk, new wave, synth-pop, and cold wave.

Rockaway Beach is an annual music festival in England, held at the Butlin's holiday resort in Bognor Regis. It was founded by Ian Crowther in 2015, devised as a live mixtape that would differ from other festivals by having as few stage time clashes as possible, compared to other festivals. The festival has previously seen appearances from some of the world's biggest touring live acts including Gary Numan, Echo and the Bunnymen, Killing Joke, and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.
