The Earlham Public School is a historic building located in Earlham, Iowa, United States. The town's name was chosen by the Quakers, who were the largest group of settlers in the community. [2] They named it for Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana because they intended to establish a similar institution in the town. Fundraising got underway in 1869, and the following year plans were made to establish a public befitting a college town. Earlham Public School open in 1871. Jennings P. Osborn, a local builder, constructed the two-story structure of smooth-faced limestone that rests on rusticated limestone foundation. The building soon proved to be too small and a brick addition was added to the south side of the original building.

The college plans fell through because of a lack of financing. The Quakers founded Earlham Academy in 1892 hoping it would grow into a college, but it did not. [2] They sold the building to the local public school in 1900, and they used it for a high school. This building was used by the elementary grades. School districts were consolidated in 1920 and a larger building that could accommodate all grades was built in Earlham. This building was used from that point as a Masonic lodge until it was converted into a local museum. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. [1]

The school was named for its patron, William Larrabee, who was the twelfth Governor of Iowa. Larrabee himself had been a teacher in Allamakee County, Iowa. During his time in the Iowa Senate and as governor he championed education reform. He used as one of his campaign slogans: "A schoolhouse on every hill and no saloons in the valley." Larrabee and his wife Anna studied school buildings for a number of years, and were involved in planning this building. They hired Cedar Rapids, Iowa architect Charles A. Dieman to design the structure. R.A. Wallace, a contractor from Cedar Rapids, was responsible for its construction. The building was over-engineered as Larrabee insisted that the strength of everything be doubled. The bricks were produced, and the limestone was quarried, locally. Washington Township Center High School United States historic place

Washington Township Center High School, also known as the Washington Township Community Center, is a historic building located northeast of Amish, Iowa, United States. Built in 1926, this public institution was both a throw-back to the 19th-century and forward-looking at the same time. It was a throwback in that the school was financed and maintained by way of donations and tuition paid by township residents instead of taxes. It was forward-looking in that the rural people of this area recognized the need for education beyond the traditional eight grades. Because of the poor roads in the area and rural people's distrust of urban areas, where Iowa's high schools were generally located at the time, the citizens of Washington Township chose to build a high school across the road from the elementary school. It closed in 1945, and the building continued in use as a polling place. In 1952 it became the meeting place for the local 4-H chapter. A corporation was established in 1960 to maintain the building as a community building for public functions. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
