Football at the 1988 Summer Olympics – Men's European Qualifiers

The European Qualifiers for men's football competitions at the 1988 Summer Olympics to be held in Seoul. The tournament took place from 10 September 1986 to 31 May 1988 including a preliminary round. At the end, five countries qualified including West Germany, Italy, Sweden, Soviet Union, and Yugoslavia.

Contents

The draw for the tournament took place on 27 May 1986 in Mexico City during the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. [1] Out of 34 European football nations at the time in tournament participated only 27 with five allowing for qualification to the Summer Olympics football tournament. [1] All participants were split in five groups of five teams with winners of each qualify for the Olympics. Four teams were contesting two berths in two of five groups.

Seven football nations that did not participate included four team of British islands (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales) that refused to form the unified Great Britain team required by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Malta (never fielded its team previously), Luxembourg (not fielding in 1980s), and Albania (political restrictions since 1972). For the tournament returned Turkey and Warsaw Pact nations that boycotted the 1984 Olympics football tournament in Los Angeles such as East Germany, Poland and the Soviet Union. [2] [3]

Notes

  1. The Poland vs Denmark match on originally ended 0-2, but FIFA announced on 13 November 1987 that Denmark had fielded an ineligible player (Per Frimann), and thus the result was overturned, and Poland were awarded the match by a default score of 2-0. [4]

Awards and decorations of the Soviet Union are decorations from the former Soviet Union that recognised achievements and personal accomplishments, both military and civilian. Some of the awards, decorations, and orders were discontinued after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, while others are still issued by the Russian Federation as of 2023. Many of the awards were simply reworked in the Russian Federation, such as the transition of Hero of the Soviet Union to Hero of the Russian Federation, and Hero of Socialist Labour to Hero of Labour of the Russian Federation. A wide range of Soviet awards and decorations cover the extensive and diverse period of history from 1917 to 1991.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lubomir Kavalek</span> Czech-American chess player (1943–2021)

Lubomir (Lubosh) Kavalek was a Czech-American chess player. He was awarded both the International Master and International Grandmaster titles by FIDE in 1965. He won two Czechoslovak and three U.S. championships, and was ranked as the world's No. 10 player in 1974. He was inducted into the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame in 2001. Kavalek was also a chess coach, organizer, teacher, commentator, author and award-winning columnist.

Aleksandr Belyakov was a Soviet luger who competed in the mid-1980s. Competing in two Winter Olympics, he won the silver medal in the men's doubles event at Sarajevo in 1984.

Group 3 of the 2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying competition consisted of six teams: France, Ukraine, Scotland, Iceland, Macedonia, and Northern Ireland. The composition of the nine groups in the qualifying group stage was decided by the draw held on 5 February 2015.
