Medium Gasoline Engine (MGE) is a medium-displacement 4-cylinder gasoline engine developed by Opel Automobile GmbH and marketed as 'SIDI Ecotec'.
Production began in late 2012 at Szentgotthárd, Hungary. [1] [2] The engine features Start/Stop and reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 13 percent comparing to the predecessor, while maintaining Euro 6 emissions standards. [3]
A turbocharged Eco variant delivering 170 PS (125 kW; 168 hp) @ 4250 rpm and 260 N⋅m (192 lb⋅ft) @ 1650-4250 rpm (overboost 280 N⋅m (207 lb⋅ft)) has been introduced at 2012 Moscow International Automobile Salon (MIAS); a Performance version with maximum torque 300 N⋅m (221 lb⋅ft) and peak power 200 PS (147 kW; 197 hp) will also be available. Each version features unique turbine aerodynamic, and aggressive boost strategies improve low-end torque. [4]
The high-performance turbocharged 1,995 cc (2.0 L) 20A4E engine with central direct injection has 79 mm × 81.5 mm (3.11 in × 3.21 in) bore and stroke, with cylinder pressure of 130 bar (1,900 psi) and compression ratio of 9.5:1 for Performance version and 10.5:1 for Eco version is developed and manufactured by Chinese Saic Motor company. It uses a grey cast-iron block with die-cast aluminum bedplate, aluminum cylinder head, chain-driven DOHC valvetrain with hydraulic tensioners, dual continuous variable cam phasing, and forged steel crankshaft. The engine has twin balance shafts and specially designed cam cover to improve NVH, while optimized compressor geometry, acoustic resonators and overall air handling help reduce noise by 2 dB. Centrally placed injector allows optimal operation in both stratified and homogeneous charge ignition. Optimized main bearing journal diameter, roller cam followers, and PVD coated piston rings reduce friction. [4]
Starting in 2013, the engine began to replace turbocharged 1.6 L Family I Ecotec engine in Opel cars, and in 2014-2015 it will replace naturally aspirated 1.6 L and 1.8 L Family 1 engines in Chevrolet cars. Starting with 2020 model year, this engine is no longer available for the United States market, due to Buick Cascada and Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid being phased out because of low sales and high importation taxes from Europe.

Opel Automobile GmbH, usually shortened to Opel, is a German automobile manufacturer which has been a subsidiary of Stellantis since 16 January 2021. It was owned by the American automaker General Motors from 1929 until 2017 and the PSA Group prior to its merger with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles to form Stellantis in 2021. Most of the Opel lineup is marketed under the Vauxhall brand in the United Kingdom since the 1980s. Delta was a General Motors compact front-wheel drive automobile and crossover SUV platform, originally developed by Opel Group. Epsilon is General Motors' mid-size front-wheel drive automobile platform. The GM Family I is a straight-four piston engine that was developed by Opel, a former subsidiary of General Motors and now a subsidiary of PSA Group, to replace the Vauxhall OHV, Opel OHV and the smaller capacity Opel CIH engines for use on small to mid-range cars from Opel/Vauxhall. The engine first appeared in the Opel Kadett D in 1979, and shortly afterwards in its Vauxhall badged sister – the Vauxhall Astra Mk.1 in 1980. Despite this, the previous Opel OHV engine continued to be sold in entry level versions of the Opel Kadett/Astra and Corsa throughout the 1980s.

The Family II is a straight-4 piston engine that was originally developed by Opel in the 1970s, debuting in 1981. The Medium Diesel Engine (MDE) is a four-cylinder diesel engine developed by Adam Opel AG and branded "1.6 CDTI Ecotec" in most markets. Opel also adds the marketing term "Whisper Diesel" in some markets, claiming relatively low levels of noise, vibration, and harshness. Production commenced in late 2013 at Szentgotthárd, Hungary. The MDE is Opel's first all-aluminum diesel engine and offers a power density of 85 hp (63 kW) per liter 136 PS in its most powerful version. Maximum power and torque have been increased versus the previous-generation 1.7-liter engine, while fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 10 percent compared with a 2.0-liter CDTI engine of similar power output. This new 1.6 CDTI engine will replace the current 1.7-liter and lower-powered 2.0-liter diesel engines in a wide range of Opel models, with more- and less-powerful versions to come. The most powerful version of this engine, delivering 136 PS at 3,500–4,000 rpm and 320 N⋅m (236 lb⋅ft) at 2,000 rpm, was first introduced in the 2013 Opel Zafira Tourer, and later in the 2014 Opel Astra J and restyled 2014 Opel Meriva B. In 2014, versions were released with power outputs of 110 and 95 PS.
