HMS Sultan is a shore base of the Royal Navy in Gosport, Hampshire, England. It is the primary engineering training establishment for the Royal Navy and home to the Network Rail Advanced Apprenticeship Scheme and the EDF Energy engineering maintenance apprenticeship. It is expected that HMS Sultan will close in the near future, but "no earlier than 2029". [1]
The site was originally RAF Gosport it was then transferred to the Royal Navy during 1945 as HMS Siskin (Hence a nearby school being named Siskin School) it was then renamed HMS Sultan on 1 June 1956 when the airfield side was closed down and a Mechanical Repair Establishment was moved here from the Flathouse area by Portsmouth Dockyard. A Better Defence Estate, published in November 2016, indicated that the Ministry of Defence intend on disposing of HMS Sultan by 2026. It was proposed that Submarine Engineer Training would move to HM Naval Base Clyde in 2024, Mechanical Engineering Training to HMS Collingwood in 2025 and the Admiralty Interview Board to HM Naval Base Portsmouth in 2026. [3] However, in March 2019 the Ministry of Defence announced that closure would be delayed to 2029 at the earliest. [4]

703 Naval Air Squadron of the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy was formed as a long-range catapult squadron on 3 March 1942 at RNAS Lee-on-Solent. During the Cold War, it was reformed as an experimental trials unit, and then as a helicopter training squadron. 717 Naval Air Squadron was a Naval Air Squadron of the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm. It formed as a Torpedo Bomber Reconnaissance Training Squadron, at RNAS Fearn, in July 1944, operating with Barracuda aircraft. The squadron then moved to RNAS Rattray, in the October, continuing in Torpedo Bomber Reconnaissance training. In early 1946 the squadron received Firebrand aircraft, with the objective of forming a Firebrand Conversion Unit, however the squadron disbanded in March 1946.
763 Naval Air Squadron was a Naval Air Squadron of the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm. It formed in 1939 as the Torpedo Spotter Reconnaissance Pool No. 1, at RNAS Worthy Down. Three months later, it moved to the short-lived RNAS Jersey, before moving back to Worthy Down via RNAS Lee-on Solent and disbanding in 1940. The squadron reformed, on the seaplane carrier HMS Pegasus, as a Seaplane Training Squadron, in 1942. This role lasted around two years and the squadron continually operated and provided training from HMS Pegasus, until disbanding in 1944. Roughly two months later, the squadron reformed again, this time at RNAS Inskip, as an Anti-submarine Operational Training Squadron and remained in this role for just over one year, disbanding in July 1945 at Inskip.
Royal Naval Air Station Crail or RNAS Crail (HMS Jackdaw) is a former Royal Naval Air Station of the Fleet Air Arm located 4.9 miles (7.9 km) east of Anstruther, Fife and 8.8 miles (14.2 km) from St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. It was home to a site of the Joint Services School for Linguists from 1956 to 1960.
