The Japanese political process has two types of elections.
The Hokkaido at-large district is a constituency of the House of Councillors in the Diet of Japan. It consists of the prefecture (dō) of Hokkai[dō] and is represented by six Councillors electing three at a time every three years by single non-transferable vote for six-year terms. In the election period from 2019 to 2022, Hokkaido's Councillors are :
Hokkaidō 1st district is a single-member constituency of the House of Representatives, the lower house of the national Diet of Japan. It is located in Sapporo, the prefectural capital of Hokkaido. In 2017, its border were redrawn and it now consists of Sapporo's Chūō ("Centre") and Minami ("South") wards, a portion of Nishi ("West") ward as well as a small part of Kita ("North") ward.
Hokkaidō 2nd district is a single-member electoral district for the House of Representatives, the lower house of the National Diet of Japan. It is located in Sapporo, the prefectural capital of Hokkaido and consists of the Higashi ("East") ward and most of the Kita ("North") ward.
The Niigata at-large district is a constituency that represents Niigata Prefecture in the House of Councillors in the Diet of Japan. Since July 2019, it has two Councillors in the 242-member house, a decrease from its previous contingent of 3.
General elections were held in Japan on 31 October 2021, as required by the constitution. Voting took place in all constituencies in order to elect members to the House of Representatives, the lower house of the National Diet. As the constitution requires the cabinet to resign in the first Diet session after a general election, the elections will also lead to a new election for Prime Minister in the Diet, and the appointment of a new cabinet, although ministers may be re-appointed. The election was the first general election of the Reiwa era.
Yuichiro Tamaki is a Japanese politician and the leader of the Democratic Party for the People (DPFP). He is a member of the House of Representatives, and a former leader of Kibō no Tō. Before joining Kibō, Tamaki was a member of the Democratic Party.

House of Councillors elections were held in Japan on 21 July 2019 to elect 124 of the 245 members of the House of Councillors, the upper house of the then 710-member bicameral National Diet, for a term of six years.

The Group of Independents was a parliamentary group in the House of Representatives, the lower house of the Japanese National Diet. It consisted exclusively of non-party deputies, many of whom were formerly members of the Democratic Party.
The Hekisuikai is a parliamentary group in the House of Councillors, the upper house of the Japanese National Diet. It was formed in late July 2019 briefly after the 25th regular election of members of the House of Councillors by two new members who had been elected as independents for the center-left opposition alliance in single-member constituencies :
The 2019 Hokkaido gubernatorial election was held on 7 April 2019 to elect the next Governor of Hokkaido Prefecture. After serving four terms, incumbent Governor Harumi Takahashi decided not to seek re-election. The election resulted in a landslide victory for Naomichi Suzuki, the former mayor of Yūbari, who won 62% of the popular vote. His opponent, Tomohiro Ishikawa, had the support of CDP, JCP, SDP and DPFP, but only managed to secure 37% of the vote.
