Iwate 2nd district is a single-member constituency of the House of Representatives in the National Diet of Japan located in Iwate Prefecture. As of 2020, the district was home to 376,270 constituents. [1]
The area was for a long time the location of the political support base of former Prime Minister Zenkō Suzuki and, for most of its existence, the 2nd district has been represented by his son Shun'ichi Suzuki, current Minister of Finance. [2]
The impact of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami was concentrated in Fukushima, Miyagi, and Iwate prefectures. [3] As the 2nd district contains all of Iwate's coastline, [4] it was hit the hardest of Iwate's three districts and was one of the worst affected districts in all of Japan. [3]
The district spans Eastern and Northern Iwate. It is the largest Lower House electoral district on the island of Honshu, roughly 7000 km2, more than three times the size of Tokyo Metropolis. [5] After redistricting in 2017, it includes a large area that was previously of part of the Iwate 3rd district.

The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami caused extensive damage to the city. Kesennuma is a city in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. As of 1 August 2020, the city had an estimated population of 59,803 and a population density of 190 inhabitants per square kilometre (490/sq mi) in 26,390 households. The total area of the city is 332.44 square kilometres (128.36 sq mi). Large sections of the city were destroyed by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami and major fires on March 11, 2011.

Iwate 4th district was a constituency of the House of Representatives in the Diet of Japan. It was located in southwestern Iwate and consisted of the cities of Hanamaki, Kitakami and Ōshū as well as the Waga and Isawa Districts. As of 2012, 305,917 eligible voters were registered in the district.
Iwate 1st district is a single-member constituency of the House of Representatives in the Diet of Japan. It is located in central Iwate and consists of the prefectural capital Morioka city and the two remaining towns in Shiwa district. Before 2017, it covered of the majority of the prefectural capital Morioka and Shiwa district. As of 2012, 278,860 eligible voters were registered in the district.
The Reconstruction Agency is an agency of the Japanese government established on February 10, 2012 to coordinate reconstruction activities related to the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.
