The following is a list of the top 10 highest-grossing musical theatre franchises worldwide based on limited available data. The following figures include revenue grossed from ticket sales in theatres across the world. [1] [2]

Note that the following gross figures are nominal, not adjusted for inflation, and do not take into account rising ticket prices. As such, the list gives far more weight to more recent musicals.

Broadway revenue (since 1982)

The following is a list of the top 25 highest-grossing Broadway musicals since 1982, based on data collected by the Broadway League. These grosses do not take into account the effects of inflation and as such the list is heavily skewed in favor of more recent Broadway shows. Moreover, the Broadway League did not begin collecting gross data until June 1984. [12] Hence, accurate pre-1984 gross data is not available and this list should not be considered accurate for musicals that premiered on Broadway before that year.

The Lion King sits at the top, with a Broadway gross of $1.6 billion.

Dates refer to original Broadway productions, with notes added for future productions that outran the Broadway run.

Musical theatre

The following is a list of the top 10 musical theatre franchises with the highest theatre admissions. The list includes worldwide ticket sales as well as Broadway ticket sales since 1984.

The Broadway League did not begin collecting admissions data until June 1984. [12] Hence, pre-1984 Broadway admissions data is not available and the Broadway figures should not be considered accurate for musicals that premiered on Broadway before that year.

Musical films

The following table lists known estimated box office ticket sales for various high-grossing musical films that have sold at least 75 million tickets worldwide.

Note that some of the data are incomplete due to a lack of available admissions data from a number of countries. Therefore, it is not an exhaustive list of all the highest-grossing musical films by ticket sales, so no rankings are given.

  15. 1 2 Box Office Mojo stopped updating its main total for Frozen in August 2014, while it was still in release. The total listed here incorporates subsequent earnings in Japan, Nigeria, Spain, the United Kingdom and Germany up to the end of 2015, but omits earnings in Turkey, Iceland, Brazil, and Australia (2016) which amount to a few hundred thousand dollars. The total is rounded to $1 million to compensate for the numerical inaccuracy.
  16. Snow White earned over $8 million in gross rentals by the end of 1938, in the process becoming the highest-grossing sound film.
  17. 1 2 3 See Awaara § Box office
  18. It is possible Aladdin never took the record. Aladdin's release (1992–93) coincided with a Snow White reissue, and it is possible that Snow White ended up grossing more. Snow White had grossed a total of $330 million up to 1987, and then added a further $88 million in North America from its 1987 and 1993 reissues; it is unknown how much Snow White made from these reissues outside of North America, but if the foreign gross matched or exceeded the North American gross then Snow White would have earned more.
  19. The gross rental is the distributor's share of the box-office gross and was more commonly reported than the exhibition gross up to the 1970s.

Disney Renaissance Period of consecutive critically and commercially successful Disney animated films from 1989 to 1999

The Disney Renaissance was the period from 1989 to 1999 during which Walt Disney Feature Animation returned to producing critically and commercially successful animated films that were mostly musical adaptations of well-known stories, much as the studio did during the era of Walt Disney during the 1930s to 1960s. The resurgence allowed Disney's animated films to become powerhouse successes at the domestic and foreign box office, earning much greater profit than most of the Disney films of previous eras.
