The following list of peckerwood gangs are defined as street gangs within the peckerwood subculture.

Contents

Overview

The peckerwood subculture had its beginnings in Oklahoma where the word was used to refer to white inmates in the 1930s. During the Great Depression, a major migration of Oklahomans came to California's Kern County. This migration also established a newfound peckerwood subculture in California with gangs such as the Okie Bakers and Oildale Peckerwoods in Bakersfield. This subculture continued to establish among ethnic Whites in the rural farm towns of California. The peckerwood prison subculture had its beginnings in the desegregation of United States prisons. It spreads as far North as Sutter, Yuba, and Butte counties. Aryan Brotherhood had its beginnings in the California San Quentin State Prison (300 miles northwest of Kern County) in 1964 as a response to the newly formed black prison gang Black Guerilla Family. [1] [2] [3] The Aryan Brotherhood's alliance with the Mexican Mafia in the prison system set the foundation of street politics ever since, which also sometimes translates to the streets. The San Quentin State Aryan Brotherhood uses the gang Family Affiliated Irish Mafia (FAIM) for its street operated activity. [4]

The peckerwood subculture has established street gangs that mix elements from white power skinhead culture and conventional street gang activity, such as illegal drugs. These peckerwood street gangs generally form in lower-income or middle-class white neighborhoods, as well as Latino neighborhoods or "barrios". These gangs are the manifestation of a modern "white power" subculture that combines the elements of Sureños culture, extreme sports (surfing, skating, motocross) and cannabis smoking. [5] Stylistically these gangs combine elements of Latino gang culture (Pendleton flannel and baggy pants) and skinhead culture (Doc Marten boots, bomber jackets, and shaved heads). [6] In the 1980s the swastika was also used as a general decorative symbol, but also one for shock value, and used by white and sometimes Hispanic gangs. This was also considered to be relative to lack of education on its historical context. [7]

Many of these Peckerwood gangs in California are subservient to the authority of Nazi Lowriders, which includes the punk gangs Vicious Circle and La Mirada Punks, as well as Insane White Boys, Independent Skins, Orange County Skins, and a rigid alliance with Southern California Skinhead Alliance (SoCal Skins). [8] Leading the alliance with Nazi Lowriders, the peckerwood gang Public Enemy No. 1 (PEN1 ( /ˈpn/ )) was established in Long Beach, California during the late 1980s, and known for recruiting middle-class "latchkey kids" within the Southern California punk scene.

[6] [8] [9] [10] The smaller gangs such as Public Enemy No. 1 and Insane White Boys are considered "kids" within the Peckerwood gang world, whereas Nazi Lowrider groups are led by "seniors" who induct "kids" into membership. A kid can become a "junior", and a junior can become a senior if elected by three other seniors. [8]

Gang apparel

Skateboarder, surfer, and former peckerwood Jay Adams stated, "the Latino gangs used to wear the same exact thing that we surfers wore, but they wore it differently. We wore baggy Levis or Pinwheel cords, t-shirts and like a long button-down Pendleton, and these shoes called Winos. Well, the Latino and the African-American gangs, they wore the same exact thing we wore, except theirs were starch-pressed." Peralta went on to say, "And then, what happened is in the late-1980s, early 1990s when street skateboarding became very popular, there was a real symbiosis between inner-city gang life and skateboarding, where they were literally wearing the same clothes." [11] As well, peckerwoods generally identify with the color white and are known for wearing white caps and handkerchiefs. [12] The most common gang sign for Peckerwoods is forming the thumb, index finger and middle finger of the right hand to form the letter "P," and the four fingers of the left to form the letter "W". [13]

[4] [18] [1] Coby Phillips was one of the four men who founded FAIM in the mid 90s, as a response to what he saw as a death of good role models in the "white pride" movement. Later, while in prison and awaiting trial for the murder of fellow Aryan Brotherhood member Daryll Grockett, Philips read about Auschwitz in Elie Wiesel's Night and discussed Nazism with a Holocaust survivor. After this, his opinion changed, and he no longer condones the use of Nazi symbols. [18]

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Aryan Brotherhood makes up an extremely low percentage of the entire US prison population but it is responsible for a disproportionately large number of prison murders.

Mexican Mafia Mexican American criminal organization

The Mexican Mafia, also known as La eMe, is a Mexican American criminal organization in the United States. Despite its name, the Mexican Mafia did not originate in Mexico, and is entirely a U.S. criminal prison organization. Law enforcement officials report that the Mexican Mafia is the deadliest and most powerful gang within the California prison system.

A prison gang is an inmate organization that operates within a prison system. It has a corporate entity and exists into perpetuity. Its membership is restrictive, mutually exclusive, and often requires a lifetime commitment. Prison officials and others in law enforcement use the euphemism "security threat group". The purpose of this name is to remove any recognition or publicity that the term "gang" would connote when referring to people who have an interest in undermining the system.

White power skinheads, also known as racist skinheads and neo-Nazi skinheads, and pejoratively known as Boneheads, are members of a neo-Nazi, white supremacist and antisemitic offshoot of the skinhead subculture. Many of them are affiliated with white nationalist organizations and some of them are members of prison gangs. The movement emerged in the United Kingdom between the late 1960s and the late 1970s, before spreading across Europe, Russia and North America in the 1980–1990s.

Peckerwood is a term used in the Southern United States for a woodpecker which is also used as an offensive epithet toward white people, especially poor rural whites. Originally an ethnic slur, the term has been embraced by a subculture related to prison gangs and outlaw motorcycle clubs. The term was in use as an inversion of woodpecker by the 1830s, with the sense referring to white people documented from the 1850s. African-American folklore in the 1920s contrasted the white "peckerwood" bird with the African-American blackbird. The word became a common term in Jive.

American Front Nationalist white-supremacy group

American Front (AF) is a white supremacist organization founded in San Francisco, California by Bob Heick in 1984. It began as a loose organization modeled after the British National Front. Heick began working with Tom Metzger's White Aryan Resistance (WAR) in 1988. Heick and artist Boyd Rice posed for photos in AF uniforms for an article on neo-Nazism in Sassy magazine. Rice claims he was never really a member of the American Front, but that he was friends with Heick.

Nazi Lowriders White supremacist gang

The Nazi Lowriders are a Neo-Nazi, White supremacist organized crime syndicate, and prison and street gang based primarily in metro Los Angeles and several areas around Texas. They also are believed to have spread to other states, having small rural and suburban factions. Their main rivals are the Bloods, the Crips, the Black Guerrilla Family, MS-13, Norteños, and Nuestra Familia. The Nazi Lowriders operate both in and outside of prison. Methamphetamine abuse is common among members of the group. The NLR's acts of violence have even seen victims from the general public, including police officers.

Aryan Circle White supremacist, neo-Nazi prison gang in the United States

The Aryan Circle is a white supremacist, Neo-Nazi prison gang spread throughout many U.S. correctional facilities.

A prison gang is an inmate organization that operates within a prison system, that has a corporate entity, exists into perpetuity, and whose membership is restrictive, mutually exclusive, and often requires a lifetime commitment. Political scientist David Skarbekargues the emergence of prison gangs are due to the dramatic increase in the prison population and inmate's demand for safety. Skarbek observes that in a small, homogeneous environment, people can use social norms to interpret what behavior is acceptable, but a large, heterogeneous setting undermines social norms and acceptable behavior is more difficult to determine. Prison gangs are geographically and racially divided, and about 70% of prison gang members are in California and Texas. Skarbek suggests prison gangs function similar to a community responsibility system. Interactions between strangers are facilitated because you do not have to know an individual's reputation, only a gang's reputation. Some prison gangs are transplanted from the street. In some circumstances, prison gangs "outgrow" the internal world of life inside the penitentiary, and go on to engage in criminal activities on the outside. Gang umbrella organizations like the Folk Nation and People Nation have originated in prisons.

It was linked to several high-profile murders and criminal investigations. Those included the assassination of Colorado Department of Corrections head Tom Clements. Due to a threatening letter sent by a Texas Aryan Brotherhood member, it was suspected to be linked to similar assassinations of Texas district attorney Mike McLelland, and his assistant prosecutor Mark Hasse, but a former Justice of the Peace was eventually indicted for those murders.
