O'Connell is an outer southern suburb of Gladstone in the Gladstone Region, Queensland, Australia. [2] In the 2021 census, O'Connell had a population of 399 people. [1]

Geography

The northern arm of the estuary of the Boyne River forms part of the eastern boundary. [3] Gladstone–Benaraby Road (State Route 58) closely parallels much of the eastern boundary before passing through the south-eastern corner. [4] [5]

Toolooa railway station is an abandoned railway station on the North Coast railway line ( 23°55′55″S151°17′22″E / 23.9319°S 151.2895°E / -23.9319; 151.2895 (Toolooa railway station (former)) ). [6] [5]

History

The suburb is named after Sir Maurice Charles O'Connell who was the Government Resident at Port Curtis from 1854 to 1859. In 1860 (after the Separation of Queensland), O'Connell was appointed a member of the Queensland Legislative Council and was its President from 1860 to 1879. [2]

There are no schools in O'Conell. The nearest government primary schools are Kin Kora State School in Kin Kora to the north and Gladstone South State School in South Gladstone to the north. The nearest government secondary school is Toolooa State High School in South Gladstone to the north. [8]

There is a boat ramp and floating walkway on the Gladstone - Benaraby Road providing access to the South Trees Inlet ( 23°56′10″S151°17′25″E / 23.9360°S 151.2902°E / -23.9360; 151.2902 (Toolooa, Gladstone - Benaraby Road boat ramp) ). It is managed by the Gladstone Regional Council. [9]

Gladstone–Benaraby Road is a continuous 19.4 kilometres (12.1 mi) road route in the Gladstone region of Queensland, Australia. Much of the route is signed as State Route 58. Gladstone–Benaraby Road is a state-controlled regional road. As part of State Route 58 it provides an alternate route between Benaraby and Mount Larcom. It is also part of the shortest route from Gladstone to the south of the state.
