Purno Agitok Sangma was an Indian politician who has served as the 4th Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 1988 to 1990 and the 11th Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1996 to 1998. He also served as a member of the Lok Sabha from Tura from 2014 to 2016, 1991 to 2008 and from 1977 to 1989 and the minister of 21st Information and Broadcasting in the Rao ministry from 1995 to 1996, founder of NPP and Co- founder of NCP. He was the candidate for the 2012 Indian presidential election, supported by BJP and AIADMK, however he lost to Congress politician Shri Pranab Mukherjee. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian award, posthumously in 2017 in the field of Public Affairs and was the first recipient of Padma Vibhushan from Meghalaya.

The HSPDP has been a junior member of coalition governments in Meghalaya on a number of occasions and following the 2018 election joined the National People's Party-led government of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

His father was former Chief Minister, former Speaker of the Lok Sabha P. A. Sangma. He was also a Member of Parliament from Tura (2016–2018). He represents the South Tura constituency since 2018 and Selsella constituency from 2008 to 2013. Sangma was also minister of finance,power and tourism, Government of Meghalaya from 2008 to 2009. He is former leader of the opposition in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. He also served as National President of the Nationalist Youth Congress.
Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh is an Indian politician who has served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Indian state of Meghalaya since 2008. She currently serves as a Cabinet Minister in the State Government of Meghalaya.

The motive of the new political front was to protect the interest of the people of the region as well as uniting non-Congress parties in Northeast India. An election was held on 27 February 2018 in 59 out of 60 constituencies of the Legislative Assembly of Nagaland. The scheduled election in Northern Angami II constituency did not take place as only incumbent MLA Neiphiu Rio was nominated and was therefore declared elected unopposed. The counting of votes took place on 3 March 2018.
The Hill People's Union was a political party in the state of Meghalaya in India. It was founded in 1985. The founders were 11 members from the All Party Hill Leaders Conference and Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) who joined together after the fall of the earlier short-lived coalition government formed by the two parties, which had won 31 seats in the 1983 Meghalaya Legislative Assembly elections. It was once "one of the three major regional parties" in the state. In the 1988 elections, under the leadership of Brington Buhai Lyngdoh, the party won 19 seats in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. In the 1993 elections it fell to eleven seats. In 1997 its members joined with the HSPDP and the Public Demands Implementation Convention to form the United Democratic Party.
Sikkim National People's Party (SNPP) was a regional political party (State Party (Unrecognized)) in the Indian state of Sikkim. Election symbol was Pen Nib. SNPP didn't have any relationship with Sikkim National Party (SNP) in same state or National People's Party (NPP) in the state of Meghalaya.
