The Port of Montreal Railway is a terminal railroad operating in Montreal, Canada.
Founded in 1907, it is owned by the governmental entity the Montreal Port Authority. However, its operations are run separately from the port as a for-profit arm.
About 100 km (60 miles) of track are under the railroad's jurisdiction, and junctions are present with both CN and Canadian Pacific. Containers are ferried by rail to the interchange area or loaded directly onto trains. [1] An average of about 45 trains operate per week.
As of 2015, the railway has a maintenance team of about 20 people, working 365 days a year. The railway handles about 60 to 80 trains per week over the 100 km of track, with 168 switch points to be maintained. The port entrance off Boucherville Street sees about 2500 trucks daily that enter or exit the facility. [2]
In 2017, an investment of $18.4 million (Canadian dollars) from the Canadian government, the Quebec government and the Port Authority allowed the construction of an additional 6km of track, to handle in increase in container volumes at the Port. As of the date of the announcement, around 45 % of the container cargo at the port was shipped out by rail. [1]
In 2010, the railway had a fleet of 6 diesel electric locomotives. [3]
As of September 2012, the Port had three EMD MP15AC (numbered 8403, 8405 and 8406), three newly acquired Railpower RP20BDs, arriving in 2010 and 2012 (numbered 1001, 1002 and 1004) and two yard slugs (ex-Grand Trunk Western GP9). The newer PR20BD locomotives are to be mated to the yard slugs. [4]

The Grand Trunk Western Railroad Company is an American subsidiary of the Canadian National Railway operating in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Since a corporate restructuring in 1971, the railroad has been under CN's subsidiary holding company, the Grand Trunk Corporation. Grand Trunk Western's routes are part of CN's Michigan Division. The New York and Atlantic Railway (NY&A) is a short line railroad formed in 1997 to provide freight service over the tracks of the Long Island Rail Road, a public commuter rail agency which had decided to privatize its freight operations. An affiliate of the Anacostia and Pacific Company, NY&A operates exclusively on Long Island, New York and is connected to the mainland via CSX's line over the Hell Gate Bridge. It also interchanges with New York New Jersey Rail's car float at the 65th Street Yard and US Rail of New York in Yaphank, New York. Its primary freight yard is Fresh Pond Junction in Queens. The NY&A officially took over Long Island Rail Road's freight operations on May 11, 1997. The initial franchise was for 20 years.
The Belt Railway Company of Chicago, headquartered in Bedford Park, IL, is the largest switching terminal railroad in the United States. It is co-owned by six Class I railroads — BNSF Railway, Canadian National Railway, Canadian Pacific Railway, CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern Railway, and Union Pacific Railroad — each of which uses the switching and interchange facilities of the BRC. Owner lines and other railroads bring their trains to the Belt Railway to be separated, classified, and re-blocked into new trains for departure. The BRC also provides rail terminal services to approximately 100 local manufacturing industries. The company employs about 440 people, including its own police force. Its president is currently Michael J. Grace.
The Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia Railway is a short line railway that operated in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. CBNS operated of main line and associated spurs between Truro in the central part of the province to Point Tupper on Cape Breton Island.
The Atlantic City Line (ACL) is a commuter rail line operated by NJ Transit (NJT) in the United States between Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Atlantic City, New Jersey, operating along the corridor of the White Horse Pike. It runs over trackage that was controlled by both the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) and the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines. It shares trackage with SEPTA and Amtrak on the Northeast Corridor (NEC) until it crosses the Delaware River on its own Delair Bridge into New Jersey.

The Commonwealth Railway, Inc. is a United States Class III short-line railroad operating 16.5 miles (26.6 km) of track of a former Norfolk, Franklin and Danville Railway line from Suffolk, Virginia, to Portsmouth, Virginia. The main office is in the Wilroy area of Suffolk. Commonwealth Railway is owned by Genesee & Wyoming Inc. and is a part of Norfolk Southern's "Thoroughbred Shortline Program". It interchanges with Norfolk Southern in Suffolk.

Tinsley was a railway marshalling yard near Tinsley in Sheffield, England, used to separate railway wagons from incoming trains and add them to new trains. It was sited immediately west of the M1 motorway, about one mile north of the Catcliffe junction. It was opened in 1965, as a part of a major plan to rationalise all aspects of the rail services in the Sheffield area; it closed in stages from 1985, with the run-down of rail freight in Britain. It was also the site of Tinsley Traction Maintenance Depot (TMD), which was closed in 1998; at its peak, 200 locomotives were allocated to this depot.

From the start of railroading in America through the first half of the 20th century, New York City and Long Island were major areas for rail freight transportation. However, their relative isolation from the mainland United States has always posed problems for rail traffic. Numerous factors over the late 20th century have caused further declines in freight rail traffic. Efforts to reverse this trend are ongoing, but have been met with limited success.
ExpressRail is a network of on- or near-dock rail yards supporting intermodal freight transport at the major container terminals of the Port of New York and New Jersey. The development of dockside trackage and rail yards for transloading has been overseen by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which works in partnership with other public and private stakeholders. As of 2019, four ExpressRail facilities were in operation, with a total built capacity of 1.5 million lifts.
The Addis Ababa–Djibouti Railway is a new standard gauge international railway that serves as the backbone of the new Ethiopian National Railway Network. The railway was inaugurated by Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn on January 1, 2018. It provides landlocked Ethiopia with access to the sea, linking Ethiopia's capital of Addis Ababa with Djibouti and its Port of Doraleh. More than 95% of Ethiopia's trade passes through Djibouti, accounting for 70% of the activity at the Port of Djibouti.
The Barstow Yard is a marshalling yard of the BNSF Railway in Barstow, California. With 48 directional tracks and a total area of 240 hectares, it is the second largest marshalling yard west of the Rocky Mountains after the JR Davis Yard. Today almost all freight traffic to and from Southern California runs through it.
