Queenborough Pier railway station was a railway station opened by the London, Chatham and Dover Railway in 1863. Initially serving for freight, it was extended in 1876 and opened for passengers. The passenger service ceased in 1914, due to World War I, although Admiralty passenger traffic continued to use the station. Attempts to reintroduce a passenger service post-WWI were unsuccessful. The station continued to serve freight traffic until the mid-1950s.
Queenborough Pier station was opened by the London, Chatham and Dover Railway (LCDR) c.1863. Initially, it served freight traffic. [1] In 1876, the station was rebuilt and the pier was extended, opening to passengers on 15 May. The Stoomvaart Maatschappij Zeeland (SMZ) operated a service from Queenborough to Vlissingen, Netherlands. [2] [3] SMZ had been operating from Ramsgate, [4] and had trialled a service from Sheerness in the summer of 1875.
On 19 May 1882, a fire occurred which closed the pier for three weeks. [2] The fire killed two LCDR porters. Two people were trapped on the pier and dived into the water. They were rescued by the SMZ steamship Prins Hendrik. Twenty wagons were destroyed, [5] as was the schooner Constance, which was aground alongside the pier. [6] [7]
SMZ transferred their services to Dover. [4] The pier was rebuilt at a cost of £100,000. [8]
A mail service to Germany operated from 1887. [2] On 13 May 1896, a boat train collided with the buffer stop at the station. Seven people were injured. [9]
The Sheerness line was closed to traffic between 5 and 11 February 1899 following flooding and to enable inspection of the Kingsferry Bridge. SMZ transferred their services to Port Victoria and the LCDR laid on a steamship service between Chatham and Queenborough Pier during this time. [10] Another fire on 17 July 1900 resulted in the pier being closed. [2] The fire was fought by 60 sailors sent from Sheerness Dockyard, a fireboat and HMS Asp, also sent from Sheerness. The Sheerness Dockyard Police Fire Brigade and the Sheerness Urban District Council Fire Brigade also assisted. The sailing barge Lena was slightly damaged, but was towed to safety the Admiralty tug Sheerness. The SMZ steamship Koningen Regentes was able to move to safety under her own steam. [8] Shipping was transferred to Port Victoria. [4] Services resumed from Queenborough on 1 November. [11]
Passenger services were withdrawn in November 1914, [4] due to World War I, but the station was used by military traffic. [12] An attempt to reintroduce passenger services post-WWI was unsuccessful, only operating between 22 December 1922 and 1 March 1923. [13] SMZ operated from Queenborough Pier until 1927, when services were transferred to Harwich, Essex. [3] The station had two signal boxes. [14] Queenborough Signal Box closed on 25 May 1934. [12] The station was used by the Admiralty during World War II. [15] Whiteway Crossing Signal Box closed on 15 December 1946, [14] and the branch was then worked as a siding. The station closed and was demolished in 1956. [13]
As of 1993 [update] the branch was open as far as Whiteway. [14]

The London, Chatham and Dover Railway was a railway company in south-eastern England. It was created on 1 August 1859, when the East Kent Railway was given parliamentary approval to change its name. Its lines ran through London, and northern and eastern Kent, to form a significant part of the Greater London commuter network. The company existed until 31 December 1922, when its assets were merged with those of other companies to form the Southern Railway as a result of the grouping determined by the Railways Act 1921.
The South Eastern Railway (SER) was a railway company in south-eastern England from 1836 until 1922. The company was formed to construct a route from London to Dover. Branch lines were later opened to Tunbridge Wells, Hastings, Canterbury and other places in Kent. The SER absorbed or leased other railways, some older than itself, including the London and Greenwich Railway and the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway. Most of the company's routes were in Kent, eastern Sussex and the London suburbs, with a long cross-country route from Redhill in Surrey to Reading, Berkshire.
The Sheppey Light Railway was a railway on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, England, which ran from Leysdown to Queenborough, where it connected with the South Eastern and Chatham Railway's Sheerness Line. It was engineered by Holman Fred Stephens and opened in August 1901 and closed on 4 December 1950. Originally there were stations at Sheerness East, East Minster on Sea, Minster on Sea, Eastchurch and Leysdown. Two halts were opened in 1905 at Brambledown and Harty Road.

The South Eastern Main Line is a major long-distance railway route in South East England, UK, one of the three main routes crossing the county of Kent, going via Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Ashford and Folkestone to Dover. The other routes are the Chatham Main Line which runs along the north Kent coast to Ramsgate or Dover via Chatham and High Speed 1 which runs through the centre of Kent to the coast at Folkestone where it joins the Channel Tunnel.
Folkestone Harbour station was one of four railway stations in Folkestone, Kent. It served Folkestone Harbour with connecting boat train services across the English Channel to Calais and Boulogne.
The Elham Valley Railway was a line connecting Folkestone and Canterbury in Kent, England. It opened between 1887 and 1889 and closed in 1947.
The Hundred of Hoo Railway is a railway line in Kent, England, following the North Kent Line from Gravesend before diverging at Hoo Junction near Shorne Marshes and continuing in an easterly direction across the Hoo Peninsula, passing near the villages of Cooling, High Halstow, Cliffe and Stoke before reaching the Isle of Grain and the container port on its eastern tip, Thamesport. There used to be a short branch line leading from Stoke Junction to the coastal town of Allhallows but this closed from 4 December 1961, the same date on which the Hundred of Hoo line was closed to passenger services.
The Gravesend West Line was a short railway line in Kent that branched off the Swanley to Chatham line at Fawkham Junction and continued for a distance of 5 miles (8 km) to Gravesend where the railway company constructed a pier to connect trains with steamers. It was opened in 1886 and closed to passenger services in 1953, remaining open to freight until 1968 before reopening briefly between 1972 and 1976. Part of the railway's former alignment was incorporated into the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.
Gravesend West was a railway station on the Gravesend West Line which served Gravesend in Kent. It opened in 1886 and was, for some time, a regular destination for boat trains from London which linked with steamers on the station's pier to ferry passengers to a variety of coastal towns and resorts. The station closed in 1953 to passengers and later to freight in 1968. The only reminder of Gravesend West which remains today is its pier, the rest having been taken over by redevelopment in the area.
Stoomvaart Maatschappij Zeeland was a Dutch ferry operator that ran services from the Netherlands to the United Kingdom between 1875 and 1989.
Hothfield railway station was a railway station on the Maidstone Line at Hothfield, Kent. It was situated between Ashford and Charing stations. The station opened in 1884; it closed to passengers in 1959 and general freight in 1964 although the sidings continued to be used for deliveries of aggregate traffic.
Ashford West railway station is a former railway station in Ashford, Kent. It was the terminus of the Maidstone Line from 1884 to 1898, constructed by the London, Chatham and Dover Railway. On the formation of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway, passenger services were transferred to the former South Eastern Railway's Ashford station. The station buildings and infrastructure survived and was used for various purposes until the late 20th century.
Sheerness Dockyard railway station was the original terminus of the Sheerness line. It was built by the Sittingbourne & Sheerness Railway and opened in 1860. The station closed for passengers in 1922, closed for freight in 1963 and the buildings were demolished in 1971.
