The Rashtriya Lok Janata Dal (abbr. RLJD) [1] [2] [3] is an Indian political party formally announced by Upendra Kushwaha on 20 February 2023, in Bihar after resignation from Janata Dal (United). The party's ideology is based on the ideals of Karpoori Thakur. [4] [5] The foundation of the party was preceded by a two day conference organised by Upendra Kushwaha in Patna, in which he invoked the participation of all the members of Mahatama Phule Samata Parishad, a socio-political organisation and his trusted aides in Janata Dal (United). In the backdrop of this conference the foundation of the party was announced. [6] [7]

In 2020 Bihar Legislative Assembly election, Upendra Kushwaha, then the president of Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP), formed a third front called Grand Democratic Secular Front, which included parties with minor presence in Bihar. The front included Bahujan Samaj Party and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen. [8] The coalition performed poorly in Bihar Assembly elections of 2020, winning only 6 seats. [9] The Rashtriya Lok Samata Party failed to win any seat, but was responsible for defeat of Janata Dal (United) (JDU) in over dozens of constituencies. [10] Due to shift of Kushwaha voters to RLSP, JDU became a junior partner in National Democratic Alliance, with its seats significantly reduced in Bihar Legislative Assembly in comparison to its partner Bhartiya Janata Party. [11]

After the results were out, JDU reorganised itself by analysing the causes of its defeat and Upendra Kushwaha was invited to join the party once again. Kushwaha merged his Rashtriya Lok Samata Party into Janata Dal (United) and was made the President of Parliamentary Board of JDU. [12] The JDU also nominated him to Bihar Legislative Council. Few months later, the rumours of Nitish Kumar selecting Tejashwi Yadav as his successor caused uneasiness for many members of JDU. Kushwaha now emerged as the critic of Tejashwi Yadav. [13] He demanded his share in JDU and refused to accept the leadership of Yadav. [14] Amidst verbal attacks by the spokespersons and leaders of JDU, he organised a two day conference in Patna, in which all the members of his defunct Rashtriya Lok Samata Party, who were in JDU were invited. [15] The members of another organisation led by him called Mahatma Phule Samata Parishad were also invited in this conference. [16] On 20 February 2023, in this two day conference, the Rashtriya Lok Janata Dal was founded. [17]

Kushwaha launched his Virasat Bachao Yatra, a statewide tour in Bihar after the foundation of Rashtriya Lok Janata Dal. [18] [19] The party was said to be formed in a bid to prohibit the Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav from becoming the new face of Mahagathbandhan and the successor of Nitish Kumar as the Chief Minister of Bihar. [20] [21] The RLJD also organised Samrat Ashok Jayanti (celebration of anniversary of Ashoka in Samrat Ashok International Convention Centre (Bapu Sabhagaar), Patna on 2 March 2023 in a bid to attract the Kushwaha (Koeri) caste to the party. [22] [23] Few days after it, the party announced the list of its office bearers. The list included some of the old allies of Upendra Kushwaha like Fazal Imam Mallick and Madhav Anand, who were associated with him from the time of Rashtriya Lok Samata Party. Some new entrants were also given significant position; Jitendra Nath, who is reported to have significant hold on Dhanuk and Kurmi caste in Magadh region was made National Vice President while former Member of Bihar Legislative Assembly from Ziradei Assembly constituency, Ramesh Singh Kushwaha was appointed as the Bihar state president of the party. As of 2024, Bihar is currently ruled by NDA, after JDU break out from Mahagatbandhan (Grandalliance) coalition and returned to NDA fold.

The alliance consists of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Indian National Congress (INC) and Left parties including Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation-CPIML (Liberation) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM), with Tejashwi Yadav as the chairperson.

The Luv-Kush equation is a political term used in the context of the politics of Bihar, to denote the alliance of the agricultural Kurmi and the Koeri caste, which was assumed to be approximately 15% of the state's population The alliance of these two caste groups has remained the support base of Nitish Kumar, as against the MY equation of Lalu Prasad Yadav, which constitutes Muslims and the Yadavs. Caste consciousness and the quest for political representation largely drive the politics of Bihar. The political alliance of the Koeri and the Kurmi castes, termed the "Luv-Kush equation" was formed when a massive Kurmi Chetna Rally was organised by members of the Kurmi community in 1994 against the alleged casteist politics of Lalu Yadav, who was blamed by contemporary community leaders for promoting Yadavs in politics and administration.

Rajeev Kumar Singh is a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing Tarapur constituency in the Bihar Legislative Assembly in India. He is a member of Janata Dal (United). He has been elected as the MLA on 2 November 2021. Singh got the ticket from Janata Dal (United) amidst the confusion over allocation of Tarapur constituency to Rohit Chaudhary, the younger brother of leader of opposition in Bihar Legislative Council, Samrat Chaudhary. The Tarapur constituency was the stronghold of Shakuni Choudhury, who had influence over Kushwaha voters, who are dominant in this assembly constituency. However, Rajiv Kumar Singh, himself a Kushwaha, was able to defeat his nearest rival in the bypolls of 2021.

Manoj Singh Kushwaha is a former minister of Bihar. Kushwaha was the Minor Water Resources minister in the Jitan Ram Manjhi cabinet in 2014–15. He contested from the Kurhani Assembly constituency in February 2005, November 2005 and 2010 legislative assembly elections, and was victorious.

Sudhanshu Shekhar is an Indian politician based in Bihar, who has served as member of Bihar Legislative Assembly for two terms. Shekhar was elected to Bihar Legislative Assembly first in the year 2016, in a bypoll conducted for the Harlakhi Assembly constituency in Madhubani district of Bihar. In this bypoll, which followed the death of incumbent legislator from Harlakhi constituency, Basant Kushwaha, he defeated Mohammad Shabbir of Indian National Congress. This was followed by his second victory in 2020 Bihar Legislative Assembly elections, in which he retained this seat. Shekhar is the son of Rashtriya Lok Samata Party politician Basant Kushwaha.
