Rupam Islam (born 25 January 1974) is an Indian Bengali singer, songwriter, music composer, and writer. He is the lead vocalist of the popular Bengali rock band Fossils . In addition to his work in rock music, Rupam is also a renowned playback singer, having contributed to numerous Bengali films.
In 2010, he won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his outstanding performance in the Bengali film Mahanagar@Kolkata . He is also a member of the Bangla Sangeet Academy, an institution under the Government of West Bengal.
Rupam Islam was born in Kolkata into a family with a musical background. His parents, Nurul and Chhandita Islam, were musicians and he began his musical journey at an early age. [1] By age nine, he was performing on Aakashvani and Doordarshan. [2]
Islam graduated from Asutosh College, affiliated with the University of Calcutta, with a degree in English literature. He also completed a Bachelor's in Education and taught English at a Kolkata school for several years before retiring to pursue music. [3]
Rupam Islam started his professional career in 1998 when his band Fossils was formed. Fossils became a prominent figure in Bengali rock music, releasing six albums over the years. [4] As a solo artist, Islam has released several albums and worked as a playback singer, winning several awards for his contributions to Bengali films. [5]
His most notable achievement came in 2010 when he won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his performance in Mahanagar@Kolkata . Islam is also involved in television, having composed jingles for commercials and television shows. [6]
Rupam Islam married Rupsha Dasgupta in 2007, and they have a son named Rup Aarohan Prometheus. [7]
He has expressed frustration and concern over women's safety in India, particularly the R.G Kar Rape Incident in 2024. He is joined by the music fraternity in West Bengal protesting against the injustices against women. A song "Khoto" (wound) was released by him, a sombre reflection of how time became more tainted with wounds instead of healing existing wounds. [8] [9]

Hemanta Mukhopadhyay, known professionally as Hemanta Mukherjee and Hemant Kumar, was an Indian music director and playback singer who primarily sang in Bengali and Hindi, along with several other Indian languages, including Marathi, Gujarati, Odia, Assamese, Tamil, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Konkani, Sanskrit and Urdu. He was a prominent artist in Bengali and Hindi film music, Rabindra Sangeet, and various other genres. He was the recipient of two National Awards for Best Male Playback Singer and was popularly known as the "Voice of God".
GeetashreeSandhya Mukherjee was an Indian playback singer and musician, specialising in Bengali music. She received Banga Bibhushan, the highest civilian honour of the Indian state of West Bengal in 2011. She also won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her songs in the films Jay Jayanti and Nishi Padma in the year 1970.
Fossils (ফসিল্স) is an Indian hard rock band from Bengal formed in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, in 1998. The group is considered one of the pioneering rock acts in Kolkata's Bengali music scene. Subsequently, he expanded his field of work to become a published author, a cricket commentator on Star Sports, host of online shows, and anchor of national and international shows. He was the associate editor of Ananda Bazar Patrika in India. He handled both sports and entertainment for the publication. He joined Ananda Bazar Patrika in January 1983 as a trainee journalist with The Telegraph (Kolkata). From February 2017 to March 2022, Bhattacharya was the joint editor of the Bengali-language daily Sangbad Pratidin. From April 2022, for a brief period of 7 months, Bhattacharya was the editor of Zee 24 Ghanta, one of eastern India's most renowned TV channels. Since early 2023 he is working as the Joint Editor of Kolkata TV ,a distinguished News Television channel of the state of West Bengal.
Anupam Roy is an Indian singer-songwriter, music director, composer, songwriter, guitarist, playback singer, engineer from Kolkata, India. He made his debut with Amake Amar Moto Thakte Dao & Benche Thakar Gaan, which appeared on the soundtrack of the 2010 Bengali film Autograph. Since then, he has gone on to compose, write lyrics and sing for many Bengali films.
Autograph is a 2010 Indian Bengali drama film by debutant director Srijit Mukherji. The movie is a tribute to Satyajit Ray's 1966 film Nayak and yesteryear Bengali actor Uttam Kumar, who portrayed the title role in the film. This was the first collaboration between Srijit Mukherjee and Prosenjit Chatterjee. The movie is being remade in Malayalam.

R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) is a Public hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, India which started as Asia's first private medical college. It was established in 1886 to ensure self-sufficiency in medical education and services in the colonial era. On May 12, 1958, the West Bengal Government assumed management of the establishment. It was under the University of Calcutta from 1916 to 2003 and affiliated to West Bengal University of Health Sciences when it was established in 2003. The college is a co-educational institution that is recognized by the National Medical Commission and affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences.

Previously, he had directed music for the television film Loadshedding in 2015, and had scored the background music for many films and webseries including the short film Ahalya, Sharate Aaj, Kaali season 1 & season 2, Feluda, Bhalobashar Shohor, Mafia and many others. He has been acclaimed for his work as a music director in the films Tangra Blues and Mukhosh (2021). As a music producer, his career spans over nine years. He is known for arranging and programming music for Anupam Roy in films like Piku, Chotushkone, Highway, Pink and many others.

Supriyo Dutta is an Indian Bengali language film and theatre artist from West Bengal. He is prominently known for his diverse roles in the Tollywood industry. He started his career as a background artist in the Indian Bengali film and established himself as an iconic personality in the theatres as well as films.
On 9 August 2024, a 31-year-old female postgraduate trainee doctor at R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, was raped and murdered in a college building. Her body was found in a seminar room on campus. On 10 August 2024, a 33-year-old male civic volunteer working for Kolkata Police was arrested under suspicion of committing the crime. Three days later, the Calcutta High Court, transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) stating that the Kolkata Police's investigation did not inspire confidence. The junior doctors in West Bengal undertook a strike action for 42 days demanding a thorough probe of the incident and adeqaute security at hospitals. The incident has amplified debate about the safety of women and doctors in India, and has sparked significant outrage, and nationwide and international protests.
