Rupam Islam (born 25 January 1974) is an Indian Bengali singer, songwriter, music composer, and writer. He is the lead vocalist of the popular Bengali rock band Fossils . In addition to his work in rock music, Rupam is also a renowned playback singer, having contributed to numerous Bengali films.

In 2010, he won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his outstanding performance in the Bengali film Mahanagar@Kolkata . He is also a member of the Bangla Sangeet Academy, an institution under the Government of West Bengal.

Early life

Rupam Islam was born in Kolkata into a family with a musical background. His parents, Nurul and Chhandita Islam, were musicians and he began his musical journey at an early age. [1] By age nine, he was performing on Aakashvani and Doordarshan. [2]

Islam graduated from Asutosh College, affiliated with the University of Calcutta, with a degree in English literature. He also completed a Bachelor's in Education and taught English at a Kolkata school for several years before retiring to pursue music. [3]

Musical career

Rupam Islam started his professional career in 1998 when his band Fossils was formed. Fossils became a prominent figure in Bengali rock music, releasing six albums over the years. [4] As a solo artist, Islam has released several albums and worked as a playback singer, winning several awards for his contributions to Bengali films. [5]

His most notable achievement came in 2010 when he won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his performance in Mahanagar@Kolkata . Islam is also involved in television, having composed jingles for commercials and television shows. [6]

Personal life

Rupam Islam married Rupsha Dasgupta in 2007, and they have a son named Rup Aarohan Prometheus. [7]

Activism

He has expressed frustration and concern over women's safety in India, particularly the R.G Kar Rape Incident in 2024. He is joined by the music fraternity in West Bengal protesting against the injustices against women. A song "Khoto" (wound) was released by him, a sombre reflection of how time became more tainted with wounds instead of healing existing wounds. [8] [9]

Since then, he has gone on to compose, write lyrics and sing for many Bengali films.

R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) is a Public hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, India which started as Asia's first private medical college. It was established in 1886 to ensure self-sufficiency in medical education and services in the colonial era. On May 12, 1958, the West Bengal Government assumed management of the establishment. On 9 August 2024, a 31-year-old female postgraduate trainee doctor at R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, was raped and murdered in a college building. Her body was found in a seminar room on campus. On 10 August 2024, a 33-year-old male civic volunteer working for Kolkata Police was arrested under suspicion of committing the crime. Three days later, the Calcutta High Court, transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) stating that the Kolkata Police's investigation did not inspire confidence. The junior doctors in West Bengal undertook a strike action for 42 days demanding a thorough probe of the incident and adeqaute security at hospitals. The incident has amplified debate about the safety of women and doctors in India, and has sparked significant outrage, and nationwide and international protests.
