Celia-Sandra Botha (born 25 February 1945) is a South African politician,who served as South Africa's Ambassador to the Czech Republic. She is the former Leader of the Opposition,on behalf of the Democratic Alliance and its leader,Helen Zille,in the National Assembly of South Africa.
She announced her intention to step down from the position after the 2009 South African general election,to become an ambassador. [1] [2] Her term in Prague ended in June 2013. [3] She will reportedly not seek a leadership position in South Africa,but will participate in political life,and be part of the "battle of ideas". [4]
Born to an Afrikaner farming family in Viljoenskroon,Orange Free State,as early as the 1960s,Botha convinced local farmers to employ a social worker to service the needs of the rural black families. She also held talks with the Citrus Board for further winter aid for farmworkers.
Having matriculated from Parys High School,Botha went on to complete a year in New York with the aid of a scholarship. Later she obtained a BA degree in economics at Stellenbosch University.
She is married to a farmer and former MP Andries Johannes Botha and the couple have five children and five grandchildren. Shortly after the marriage,Botha embarked on a Sesotho and linguistics degree at UNISA.
Botha also became heavily involved in the anti-apartheid movement. Along with Helen Zille,Botha was a part of the Black Sash movement.
She is not related to former president P.W. Botha or former foreign minister Pik Botha.
Botha was elected to the National Council of the Provinces for the Democratic Party in 1999. She served as the party's caucus leader from 2000 to 2004. [5]
In May 2007,Sandra Botha was elected by the Democratic Alliance as their representative and official Leader of the Opposition. Botha gained a majority over former NP cabinet minister,Tertius Delport. [6] [7]
Prior to her stepping down from Parliament in 2009,Botha had challenged the government on many issues. In particular,Botha was vocal about her dissatisfaction following a scandal where four white doctors in the Western Cape relocated overseas. [8] South Africa's controversial affirmative action policies had allegedly prevented them from working in government hospitals,despite a shortage of doctors and many vacancies in the province. Then-president Thabo Mbeki denied that this was the case and rebuked Botha for making serious allegations against him based on one newspaper article. [9] Botha has also called for a major overhaul of the education system.
Anthony James Leon is a South African politician who served as leader of the opposition from 1999-2007 as leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA). He led the DA from its inception in 2000,until his retirement from leadership in 2007. Before that,he led the Democratic Party from 1994. He is the longest-serving leader of the official opposition in parliament since the advent of democracy in 1994. Although still a member of the DA,he served as the South African Ambassador to Argentina,Uruguay and Paraguay under the African National Congress government from 2009 to 2012.

Otta Helene Maree,known as Helen Zille,is a South African politician. She has served as the Chairperson of the Federal Council of the Democratic Alliance since 20 October 2019. From 2009 until 2019,she was the Premier of the Western Cape province for two five-year terms,and a member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament. She served as Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance from 2007 to 2015 and as Mayor of Cape Town from 2006 to 2009.

Maimane is also the former Leader of South Africa's opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) political party from 10 May 2015 to 23 October 2019,and the former Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of South Africa from 29 May 2014 to 24 October 2019. He became the first black South African to lead the DA.
The Democratic Alliance held its 6th Federal Congress in Port Elizabeth,Eastern Cape from 9 May to 10 May 2015. After incumbent leader Helen Zille announced she would not seek reelection,the Congress became focused on the contest to succeed her.
The 2019 Western Cape provincial election was held on 8 May 2019 to elect the 6th Western Cape Provincial Parliament. It was the sixth provincial election held since the establishment of the provincial legislature in 1994.
Ivan Henry Meyer is a South African politician who has been serving as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Agriculture,Economic Development and Tourism since 2019. He has held multiple positions in the provincial cabinet. Meyer was elected to the Western Cape Provincial Parliament in 2009. He has also been the Federal Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance (DA) since November 2020,a position he previously held in an acting capacity from November 2019 to November 2020. Meyer had served as the First Deputy Federal Chairperson of the DA from 2010 to 2012,and again from 2015 to 2019. He was also the provincial leader of the party in the Western Cape from 2012 to 2015.
Nomafrench Mbombo is a South African academic and politician who has been a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since 2014,representing the Democratic Alliance. She previously served as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport from 2014 to 2015 and as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Health from 2015 until 2024. Mbombo was the Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance Women's Network from 2018 to 2021.

Theunis Louis "Theuns" Botha is a retired South African politician of the Democratic Alliance. Previously,he served as the Western Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Health. He also served as a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament from 2004 to 2015. He was Leader of the Opposition in the Provincial Parliament from 2004 to 2009 and Leader of the Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape from 2002 to 2012. Botha was also Deputy Provincial Leader of the party from 2012 to 2015.
Thomas Charles Ravenscroft Walters is a South African politician of the Democratic Alliance (DA) who has been serving as a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since May 2024. Previously,he served as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2014 and then as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa from 2014 until 2024. In 2012,Walters was elected Deputy Federal Council Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance,and has been deputising Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille since 2019. He deputised James Selfe from 2012 to 2019. Walters was the party's Shadow Minister and Shadow Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform.
The 2019 Democratic Alliance Federal Council chairpersonship election was held on 20 October 2019 to elect the new Chairperson of the South African Federal Council of the Democratic Alliance (DA),after the incumbent James Selfe had announced his retirement in June 2019.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) held its leadership conference virtually between 31 October and 1 November 2020. It was originally scheduled to be held in May 2020,but was postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The previous congress was held in 2018. In October 2019,then-party leader Mmusi Maimane announced that the party would seek to hold a policy conference and early elective congress in 2020. Maimane and former party chair Athol Trollip have since resigned from their positions and the DA. The party elected John Steenhuisen and Ivan Meyer as their interim successors,respectively.
Michael Sean Moriarty is a South African politician. He served as the chief whip of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. He was elected to the legislature in 2009 and resigned from it in 2021. He was also the provincial chairperson of the DA in Gauteng. Moriarty was previously a City of Johannesburg municipal councillor.

Previously,he had served as chief whip of the opposition from 1999 to 2007,as chairperson of the federal council of the Democratic Party between 1997 and 2000,and as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa between 1994 and 2008.
