Singapore English pop

Singapore English pop are pop music produced in the English language that are created, performed and popularised in Singapore. It is known locally as local pop or simply pop by Singaporeans, as English is the main language of Singapore. The origins of pop music in Singapore made in the English language began after the end of World War II. [1]

Locally produced English music today remains a niche among Singaporeans as compared to music produced in Mandarin or Malay. Nevertheless, interest has grown within the last decade. [2] [3]

Local culture and identity familiar to Singaporeans are common to local English music in Singapore. [1]

Origins

During the early 1960s, musicians Cliff Richard and The Shadows visited the country to perform. It had also included one of Singapore's "The Stompers", one of Singapore's earliest local bands. It left a huge impact on locals at a time when electric music was gaining popularity. [4]

Foreign acts performed in Singapore at the time also included the Rolling Stones. Local musicians often gathered with friends to listen to records released by foreign bands, and their performances subsequently motivated them to form bands of their own. [5]

Around the turn of the 21st century, artists and bands such as Dick Lee, Joanna Dong, Jasmine Sokko, 53A, The Sam Willows, Tabitha Nauser and Tanya Chua continues to reflect the distinction of Singapore pop as compared to "standard" pop made in other countries. [6]

On 20 October 2021, prominent Singaporean artist JJ Lin released his first album that contains songs in English, titled "Like You Do". [7] He also collaborated with English singer Anne-Marie in producing the song "Bedroom". [8]

Mandopop refers to Mandarin popular music. The genre has its origin in the jazz-influenced popular music of 1930s Shanghai known as Shidaiqu, with later influences coming from Japanese enka, Hong Kong's Cantopop, Taiwan's Hokkien pop, and in particular the Campus Song folk movement of the 1970s. 'Mandopop' may be used as a general term to describe popular songs performed in Mandarin. The English term was coined around 1980 soon after "Cantopop" became a popular term for describing popular songs in Cantonese; "Mandopop" was used to describe Mandarin-language popular songs of that time, some of which were versions of Cantopop songs sung by the same singers with different lyrics to suit the different rhyme and tonal patterns of Mandarin.

The Speak Mandarin Campaign is an initiative by the government of Singapore to encourage the Singaporean Chinese population to speak Standard Mandarin Chinese, one of the four official languages of Singapore. Launched on 7 September 1979 by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and organised by the Promote Mandarin Council, the SMC has been an annual event promoting the use of Mandarin.

Kelvin Tan Wei Lian (陈伟联) is a Singaporean former Mandopop singer who earned a living as a busker before he won the first edition of Project SuperStar in 2005. He has released three albums, All I Want Is... (2006), i-Weilian (2007) and Moving Notes...Kelvin Tan (2009). He also had a solo concert at the Singapore Expo, lead a choir at the opening ceremony at the 2008 Summer Paralympics and singing Singapore's 2009 National Day Parade's theme song.

Richard Lee Peng Boon is a Singaporean singer-songwriter, playwright and film director.

JJ Lin Singaporean singer

Wayne Lim Junjie, better known by his stage name JJ Lin, is a Singaporean singer, songwriter, record producer, and actor. Lin launched his musical career by releasing his debut album, Music Voyager (2003). Lin has received three Golden Melody Awards, including one Best New Artist and two Best Mandarin Male Singer.

Xinyao is a genre of songs that is unique to Singapore. It is a contemporary Mandarin vocal genre that emerged and rose to fame in Singapore between the late 1970s to 1980s. Xinyao songs are composed and sung by Singaporeans and it is an outlet for them to express their thoughts and feelings around themes like friendships or love stories. Xinyao is a Chinese noun comprising two words: Xīn (新) which is an abbreviation for Singapore, and yáo (谣) for song. The extended form is Xīnjiāpō gēyáo (新加坡歌谣), which simply means "Singapore songs".

Singaporean patriotic music

Singaporean patriotic music is a part of the culture and history of Singapore especially since its independence as a sovereign country in 1965, and has served to encourage feelings of honour for the country's forefathers and for national unity. Such songs consists of both traditional folk songs that have special meaning to Singaporeans, as well as modern songs composed specifically for national celebrations, particularly the National Day Parade held on 9 August each year, Singapore's National Day.

Serene Koong is a Singaporean singer, songwriter and producer. She is a three time Global Chinese Golden Chart Award, three time Singapore Hit Awards and a Singapore Star Awards winner.

Vocaluptuous is a vocal group from Singapore, known primarily for its a cappella deliveries and a distinctly unique Singaporean identity with original songs. The group currently consists of Hazrul Nizam, John Lee, Kai Wen Hwang, Timothy Huang and Genevieve Seah.

Corrinne May is a Los Angeles-based Singaporean musician, singer, and songwriter.

Pek Jin Shen, better known by his stage name Shigga Shay, is a Singaporean hip hop artist, songwriter, director and music producer.

Anne-Marie English singer

Anne-Marie Rose Nicholson is an English singer. She has attained several charting singles on the UK Singles Chart, including Clean Bandit's "Rockabye", featuring Sean Paul, which peaked at number one, as well as "Alarm", "Ciao Adios", "Friends", "2002" and "Don't Play". Her debut studio album Speak Your Mind was released on 27 April 2018, and peaked at number three on the UK Albums Chart. She was nominated for four awards at the 2019 Brit Awards, including Best British Female Solo Artist. In 2015, she signed a record deal with Asylum and, till 2018, she began releasing her work through the label. In late 2018, Anne-Marie left Atlantic and signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records. Since 2021, she has been a coach on the tenth series of The Voice UK.

Tat Tong Musical artist

Tat Tong; born Tong Hong Tat; is a Singaporean record producer and songwriter who is based in Los Angeles. His discography has gone 80x platinum, with over 20 #1 hits out of over 60 Top 20 hits worldwide, and he is a member of production-writing duo The Swaggernautz with American Idol Season 10 alumnus Jovany Javier. He is presently signed to Universal Music Publishing.

Ling Kai, is a bilingual Singaporean singer-songwriter. She won the Indie Artist Of The Year at YinYueTai 2nd Annual V Chart Awards in Beijing.

The TENG Company is a Singaporean non-profit arts company centred around a Chinese chamber music ensemble, The TENG Ensemble. Established in 2004, it became a charity in 2015 and an Institution of a Public Character in 2017. It currently comprises three divisions: performances, music education, and research. In his 2015 National Day Rally speech, Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong mentioned that TENG performers "inject new elements into traditional culture, and created something uniquely Singapore".

Gen Neo, is a Singaporean singer-songwriter, producer and composer based in South Korea, under BAMM Entertainment. He is part of the composing group, "Noizebank".

The Swaggernautz

The Swaggernautz is a songwriting and production duo based in Los Angeles, composed of Singaporean songwriter-producer Tat Tong and American Idol Season 10 alumnus Jovany Javier. Their combined discography has gone 60x platinum, with over 20 #1 hits out of over 60 Top 20 hits worldwide.
