Stola is an Italian automotive company founded in 1919. From its start it realized concept cars, prototypes and style models, master models and engineering consultancy for some of the biggest manufacturers in the automotive industry. [1]
In 2004 it was acquired by RGZ group, along with subsidiaries: Estival, Tecnocars and Stola do Brasil. By 2014 was sold to Blutec, part of the METEC group. As for 2006 it had more than 3.500 employees. Currently its activities are focused around production of limited edition exclusive cars. [2]

Stola S81 Stratos was a concept car designed by Marcello Gandini and shown at the 2000 Turin Motor Show. [9] Its exterior design was a hommage to Gandini's original 1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero exactly at the 30th anniversary of the 1970 Turin Motor Show presentation. Development began in autumn of 1999 to create a static show car. The front was meant to have a Lancia shield but with protest from Fiat management, a stylised mg logo appears in honour of the designer instead. Vivid orange paint colour chosen mirrored that of a prototype Stratos HF. "S81" in its name commemorates the 81st anniversary of the company founding by Alfred Stola. From 2009 concept resides in the Lopresto automobile collection, where in 2014 it received an electric motor. [10]
In 2001, at the Milan Motor Show, Stola presented a prototype model S82 Spyder built on the Porsche Boxster (986) basis. [11] Exterior was designed by Aldo Brovarone. [12]
During the engineering consultancy work done for the Thesis model in 2000, Stola proposed a stretched limousine version, similar to the previous Thema and Kappa. Fiat Group CEO Paolo Cantarella agreed to the project but under the supervision of Giancarlo Concilio of Centro Stile Lancia and engineer Nevio Di Giusto. [13] Initially Stola planned to showcase the blue-gray painted prototype at the 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show but at the last minute Fiat management decided to postpone the presentation. Although the show car was ready earlier and would be named as "S82" it was ultimately presented at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show repainted in burgundy bi-colour and renamed as the "Stola S85" to celebrate the Stola company's 85 years. The car is equipped with a beige leather interior and electrically adjustable rear seats. The car has also a minibar with refrigerator, multimedia system with GPS navigation system, internet access, fax machine and a DVD player. [15] With 230 PS (169 kW; 227 hp) and all these extra features the converted car weighs 2,030 kg (4,475 lb) and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.2 seconds, with a top speed of 230 km/h (143 mph). [16] In 2002 Fiat ordered another stretched limousine for President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and further two examples which would ultimately be cancelled. Presidential limousine would receive an armour plating by specialist shop Repetti and be delivered in 2003. [13]
Stola S86 diamante is a concept car designed by Marcello Gandini and presented at the 75th Geneva Motor Show in 2005. It is a static model of a coupé, created in just 5 weeks to demonstrate Stola's ability and speed in development and construction of automotive prototypes in a "tailor-made engineering" perspective. [17]
The name is also a reference to the company's 86 years of activity.
At the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, Stola introduced the Phalcon, a 2-door coupe with a similar design as the Maybach Exelero that Stola had in 2004. [18] The car was presented with a Mercedes-Benz V12 and a one piece windshield extending all the way to the back of the car. The plan was to produce 25 units. [19]
Giovanni Michelotti was one of the most prolific designers of sports cars in the 20th century. His notable contributions were for Ferrari, Lancia, Maserati and Triumph marques. He was also associated with truck designs for Leyland Motors, and with designs for British Leyland after the merger of Leyland and BMC.
Gruppo Bertone, commonly known as Bertone, was an Italian industrial design company which specialized in car styling, coachbuilding and manufacturing. It was also a car manufacturing company. Bertone styled cars for Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, BMW, Citroën, Ferrari, Fiat, Iso, Lancia, Lamborghini, Mercedes-Benz, Opel, and Volvo, among others. In addition, the Bertone studio was responsible for two of the later designs of the Lambretta motorscooter.
Marcello Gandini was an Italian car designer, widely known for his work with the Italian car design house, Bertone, where his work included designing the Alfa Romeo Carabo and Montreal, Lancia Stratos Zero, Maserati Khamsin, Ferrari GT4, Fiat X1/9, and several Lamborghinis, including the Bravo, Miura, Marzal, Espada, Urraco, and Countach. Gandini himself said his design interests prioritised vehicle architecture, construction, assembly, and mechanisms over styling.
A grand tourer (GT) is a type of car that is designed for high speed and long-distance driving with performance and luxury. The most common format is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive two-door coupé with either a two-seat or a 2+2 arrangement. Grand tourers are often the coupé derivative of luxury saloons or sedans. Some models, such as the Ferrari 250 GT, Jaguar E-Type, and Aston Martin DB5, are considered classic examples of gran turismo cars.
Zagato is a coachbuilding company. The design centre of the company is located in Terrazzano, a village near Rho, Lombardy, Italy.
Vignale is the luxury car sub-brand of Ford Motor Company used in automobiles sold in Europe. The former company Carrozzeria Alfredo Vignale was an Italian automobile coachbuilder established in 1948 at Via Cigliano, Turin, by Alfredo Vignale (1913–69). After its founder's death in 1969, Carrozzeria Vignale was acquired by De Tomaso. The studio ceased operation in 1973, but ownership of the name was taken over by Ford Motor Company.
The Alfa Romeo 156 is a compact executive car produced by the Italian automobile manufacturer Alfa Romeo. It was introduced at the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show as the replacement for the Alfa Romeo 155. The 156 received a positive reception and in the following year went on to win the 1998 European Car of the Year award. The 156 saloon was discontinued in Europe late in 2005, while the Q4 Crosswagon continued in production until the end of 2007.

The Alfa Romeo Kamal is a crossover SUV concept car designed by the Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo. The Kamal was presented at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show. The vehicle used the Fiat Premium platform, which it shared with the 159, Spider and Brera, and was initially set for launch in 2007. The brand was also intended to have returned to the United States in 2007.
The International Motor Show Germany or International Mobility Show Germany, in German known as the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung, is one of the world's largest mobility trade fairs. It consists of two separate fairs, that subdivided in 1991. While the IAA Mobility displays passenger vehicles, motorcycles and bikes, the IAA Transportation specializes in commercial vehicles. Before the separation, the show was held solely at the Messe Frankfurt.
Pininfarina S.p.A. is an Italian car design firm and coachbuilder, with headquarters in Cambiano, Turin, Italy. The company was founded by Battista "Pinin" Farina in 1930. On 14 December 2015, the Indian multinational Mahindra Group acquired 76.06% of Pininfarina S.p.A. for about €168 million.
The Lancia Thesis is a full-size car produced by Italian automaker Lancia between 2001 and 2009. It was available with naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines ranging between 2.0 and 3.2 litres in both straight-5 or V6 configurations. Its appearance was based on the 1998 Lancia Diàlogos concept car. The production car premiered at the 2001 Geneva Motor Show and its interior was displayed for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show that same year. Sales started in June 2002 in Italy, with export markets following shortly after.
The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is a sports car produced by Italian marque Alfa Romeo between 2007 and 2010. It was first presented as a concept car at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. The name refers to the eight-cylinder engine (8C) and Alfa Romeo's racing pedigree. The company received over 1,400 orders for the 8C after the official announcement that the car would enter production. However, only 500 customers ended up with the 8C Competizione and another 329 with the 8C Spider, bringing the production total to 829 cars.
Meccanica Bessana Toys, was an Italian toy manufacturer that produced die-cast scale model cars during the 1960s and 1970s.
The Turin Motor Show was an auto show held annually in Turin, Italy. The first official show took place between 21 and 24 April 1900, at the Castle of Valentino, becoming a permanent fixture in Turin from 1938 having shared it with Milan and Rome until that time. From 1972, the show was held biannually and in 1984, it moved into Fiat's shuttered Lingotto factory.
Aldo Brovarone was an Italian automobile designer and the chief stylist with Carrozzeria Pininfarina (1974-1988) – widely known for a prominent range of work including the Dino 206 GT, Lancia Gamma Coupé and the Peugeot 504 (sedan).
Maggiora was an Italian coachbuilder from Moncalieri near Turin. They produced the Fiat Barchetta and the Lancia Kappa Coupé which was designed by Centro Stile Lancia. In 2003 the company was closed.
The Alfa Romeo Protèo concept car was released at the Geneva Motor Show in 1991. It is a 2-door coupé cabriolet with folding roof, featuring a 3.0 liter quad-cam 24-valve, 60 degree V6 coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission, with a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). The engine used in Protèo produces 260 PS. The Protèo uses shortened floorpan used in Alfa Romeo 164 and features four wheel drive and steering. Many of the Protèo's design cues were influenced by the Alfa Romeo 916 series GTV/Spider, which was designed in July 1988. First design sketches by Alberto Bertelli are dated for December 1989. The name Protèo is derived from a Greek deity Proteus. Concept was presented in a dark metallescent red paintwork, that was later included in the Alfa Romeo range as Rosso Proteo.
Studiotorino is an Italian automotive design house, or the carrozzeria, specializing in completely handmade sports car. The company was founded on 1 January 2005 in Rivoli by Alfredo and Maria Paola Stola with Marco Goffi.
Enrico Fumia is an Italian automobile and product designer. He is widely known for his work with the car design firm Pininfarina, helping to design and package a new sports car version of the Alfa Romeo, which included front-wheel drive and traversely-mounted engines. Today he runs Fumia Design Studio.
