Urban Mass Transit Company Limited (UMTC) is an urban transport consultancy company to develop sustainable urban mobility methods and solutions. It focuses on planning, designing, project management and implementation supervision of urban transportation projects. It was founded on 13 April 1993 as a partnership between Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation and Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Limited (IL&FS). UMTC provides advisory and consultancy services for conceptualization, planning and design, implementation, operation and maintenance of urban transport projects. It provides public transit-oriented development plans, plans for city bus services, bus rapid transit (BRT) systems, monorails, metro systems and inland waterways. It also manages outsourced transport operations. [4]
UMTC helps governments and local urban bodies develop effective policies and legislation. [5]

UMTC works to increase the efficiency of existing road infrastructure by promoting sustainable activities, such as cycling, walking and providing street vendor spaces. Some of its projects are junctions design improvement in Hyderabad, Prayagraj, Lucknow, Kanpur, Meerut, Agra, Mathura etc. [7]
It helps cities in capacity building. It conducts training programmes. [8] [9] [10]
UMTC has prepared comprehensive mobility plans, integrated mobility plans, decongestion plans in older cities, transit oriented development plan for Chennai Metropolitan Area, Jaipur, Udaipur, Nagpur [11] and several other Indian cities, [12] to ease and facilitate accessibility and mobility in rural and urban areas. To provide first and last mile non-motorized connectivity, UMTC conducted feasibility studies and prepared Detailed Project Reports for development of bicycle tracks, pedestrian walkways and parks for cities like Bengaluru, Bhopal, Kochi, Kozhikode, Vijayawada, Nagpur etc. [11] [15]
UMTC helps cities develop efficient rail-based urban transit systems. It has conducted feasibility studies and prepared Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for various Indian cities and transit systems, such as Delhi Metro, Kolkata Metro, Kochi Metro, [16] [17] Lucknow Metro, Rapid Metro Gurgaon, Nagpur Metro, [11] rail-based public transport in New Town – Kolkata, Delhi – National Capital Region RRTS, Bangalore – Kempegowda International Airport high-speed rail link, Warangal –Hanamkonda –Kazipet Metro Neo, [18] Visakhapatnam metro, [19] Visakhapatnam Metrolite, [20] [21] Uttarakhand Metro etc. [22]
It helps cities to enhance bus-based public transit systems. It plans and designs Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems, along with prioritized dedicated lanes, accessible station spaces, rolling stock technology, operations and services. It also helps in implementation of city bus systems. [8]
It also focuses on inland water transport systems, such as Kochi Water Metro. [23]
To ease parking hassles, UMTC helps in preparing parking policies and master plans for Indian cities like Kochi, Nagpur and Panaji and abroad like Thimpu in Bhutan. [24] [25]

The Hyderabad Metro is a rapid transit system, serving the city of Hyderabad, Telangana, India. The Kochi Metro is a rapid transit system serving the city of Kochi in Kerala, India. It was opened to the public within four years of starting construction, making it one of the fastest completed metro projects in India. The Kochi metro project is the first metro in the country which connects rail, road and water transport facilities. The first phase is being set up at an estimated cost of ₹51.81 billion (US$650 million). In October 2017, Kochi Metro was named the Best Urban Mobility Project in India by the Urban Development Ministry, as part of the Urban Mobility India (UMI) international conference hosted by the ministry every year. The Kochi Water Metro is integrated with the Kochi Metro, which serves as a feeder service to the suburbs along the rivers where transport accesibility is limited.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) is a ministry of the Government of India with executive authority over the formulation and administration of the rules and regulations and laws relating to the housing and urban development in India. The ministry was under the charge of Venkaiah Naidu and was given to Hardeep Singh Puri when Naidu was elected Vice President of India. The Ministry became independent from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation in 2004, but was later re-merged with it in 2017.
Bengaluru Suburban Railway is an under construction suburban rail network for the city of Bengaluru. A Suburban Rail system for the city was first proposed in 1983. Since then, several different route proposals were made but no Suburban Rail project took shape. It was finally approved in the 2019 Railway Budget.

Vyttila Mobility Hub is an integrated transit terminal in the city of Kochi. It is designed as a converging point of various forms of public transportation, such as local and long-distance buses, metro rail and inland water transport. It is planned over an area of 37 acres (150,000 m2) in Vyttila, making it one of the largest bus termini in India.
Patna Metro (Patna MRTS) is a rapid transit system under construction (as of May 2023), in the city of Patna, India. Construction will be completed over five phases, and will be owned and operated by the state-run Patna Metro Rail Corporation. In the first phase, five stations of Patna Metro will be operational by March 2025. Patna MRTS, constructed under a Public Private Partnership mode, is estimated to cost ₹133,657.7 million (US$1.7 billion). This cost excludes land acquisition cost, which will be paid for by the Bihar government. The first phase (consisting of the east–west and north–south corridors) will include both a 23.30 km (14.48 mi) elevated track and a 16.30 km (10.13 mi) underground track.
Nagpur Metro is a rapid transit system for the city of Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. Phase I of the metro project cost was estimated to cost ₹8,650 crore but the final project cost incurred was ₹9,279 crore (US$1.2 billion). In February 2014, the Government of Maharashtra gave approval for the Metro Project, while the Government of India's Ministry of Urban Development had given "In Principle" approval for the Project. On 20 August 2014, Union Cabinet gave approval for the development of project, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid foundation stone on 21 August on his visit to the city. Construction on the project began on 31 May 2015, with trial run beginning on 30 September 2017.
The Noida Metro is a rapid transit system connecting the twin cities of Noida and Greater Noida in Gautam Buddh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, India. The metro network consists of one line, with a total length of 29.7 kilometres (18.5 mi) serving 21 stations. A second line is planned. The system has all elevated stations using standard-gauge tracks.
The Cuttack–Bhubaneswar–Puri Metro is a rapid transit system proposed for Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Khordha, and Puri, in Odisha, India. In the first phase, a 30 km (19 mi) metro trunk route will be created from Trisulia near Cuttack to the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar. Plans are in place to eventually expand to Khordha and Puri.
Visakhapatnam Metro is a planned rapid transit system for the city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, India. The system is proposed to reduce traffic congestion as well as providing a modern and efficient public transport system in the city which became the largest city and the main hub for economic activity of Andhra Pradesh after the state's bifurcation. It will be the only Indian city which will have a combination of both metro and tram. Once constructed it will be the world's largest metro prepared in a PPP model. Initially proposed for Metro Rail alignment for a length of 42.55 km in the city. Now, Government have planned to expand the Metro Rail system to cover more routes in the city as well as in the VMRDA area.
Transport in Visakhapatnam is the network of roads, railways, rapid transit system in the largest city of Andhra Pradesh. The city of Visakhapatnam also serves as the central hub of transport and logistics on the East coast of India and hence it is called as City Of Destiny.
Coimbatore Metro, also known as Kovai Metro, is a proposed rapid transit system for Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
The Thane Metro is a planned Mass Rapid Transit system for the city of Thane, Maharashtra, India. It will feature 22 stations along a 29 kilometres (18 mi) route and will be connected to lines 4 and 5 of the Mumbai Metro. It'll be also integrated and connected to the proposed New Thane Railway Station and existing Thane Railway Station. The project will be implemented by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation.
The Aqua Line, also known as the East-West corridor, of the Nagpur Metro is a metro route of the mass rapid transit system in Nagpur, India. It was opened on 28 January 2020.
Nagpur broad-gauge Metro is a commuter rail project planned for the city of Nagpur and extending up to adjacent areas of Wardha, Yavatmal, Narkhed, Ramtek, Bhandara, Amravati, Wadsa and Chhindwara in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, India. This project will be executed by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited. According to some Government officials first broad gauge metro will run in December 2023 on Nagpur to Yavatmal line via Wardha.And inauguration will be taken place in hand of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Metrolite is a light rail (LRT) urban transit system being planned in India for cities with lower ridership projection and as a feeder system for the existing metro systems. It will cater to lower passenger capacity at a reduced cost than a metro line. It will have dedicated tracks, separated from the road.
The Jammu Metro is a proposed light rail transit system for the city of Jammu in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The project has been proposed by the Housing and Urban Development Department of the Government of Jammu and Kashmir and is estimated to cost Rs. 4825 crores in phase 1. The proposed system will have a total route length of 43.50 km, consisting of 4 lines and 22 stations, and will be completed in two phases. The expected completion date for the project is 2026.
