Urban Mass Transit Company Limited (UMTC) is an urban transport consultancy company to develop sustainable urban mobility methods and solutions. It focuses on planning, designing, project management and implementation supervision of urban transportation projects. It was founded on 13 April 1993 as a partnership between Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation and Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Limited (IL&FS). UMTC provides advisory and consultancy services for conceptualization, planning and design, implementation, operation and maintenance of urban transport projects. It provides public transit-oriented development plans, plans for city bus services, bus rapid transit (BRT) systems, monorails, metro systems and inland waterways. It also manages outsourced transport operations. [4]
UMTC helps governments and local urban bodies develop effective policies and legislation. [5]

UMTC works to increase the efficiency of existing road infrastructure by promoting sustainable activities, such as cycling, walking and providing street vendor spaces. Some of its projects are junctions design improvement in Hyderabad, Prayagraj, Lucknow, Kanpur, Meerut, Agra, Mathura etc. [7]
It helps cities in capacity building. It conducts training programmes. [8] [9] [10]
UMTC has prepared comprehensive mobility plans, integrated mobility plans, decongestion plans in older cities, transit oriented development plan for Chennai Metropolitan Area, Jaipur, Udaipur, Nagpur [11] and several other Indian cities, [12] to ease and facilitate accessibility and mobility in rural and urban areas. To provide first and last mile non-motorized connectivity, UMTC conducted feasibility studies and prepared Detailed Project Reports for development of bicycle tracks, pedestrian walkways and parks for cities like Bengaluru, Bhopal, Kochi, Kozhikode, Vijayawada, Nagpur etc. [11] [15]
UMTC helps cities develop efficient rail-based urban transit systems. It has conducted feasibility studies and prepared Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for various Indian cities and transit systems, such as Delhi Metro, Kolkata Metro, Kochi Metro, [16] [17] Lucknow Metro, Rapid Metro Gurgaon, Nagpur Metro, [11] rail-based public transport in New Town – Kolkata, Delhi – National Capital Region RRTS, Bangalore – Kempegowda International Airport high-speed rail link, Warangal –Hanamkonda –Kazipet Metro Neo, [18] Visakhapatnam metro, [19] Visakhapatnam Metrolite, [20] [21] Uttarakhand Metro etc. [22]
It helps cities to enhance bus-based public transit systems. It plans and designs Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems, along with prioritized dedicated lanes, accessible station spaces, rolling stock technology, operations and services. It also helps in implementation of city bus systems. [8]
It also focuses on inland water transport systems, such as Kochi Water Metro. [23]
To ease parking hassles, UMTC helps in preparing parking policies and master plans for Indian cities like Kochi, Nagpur and Panaji and abroad like Thimpu in Bhutan. [24] [25]
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is a centre-state joint venture that operates the Delhi Metro and Noida Metro. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is also involved in the planning and implementation of metro rail, monorail, and high-speed rail projects in India, and abroad. The work of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is fragmented into various parts which are controlled by directors under the direction of a managing director.
The Kochi Metro is a rapid transit system serving the city of Kochi and the wider Kochi Metropolitan Region in Kerala, India. It was opened to the public within four years of starting construction, making it one of the fastest completed metro projects in India. The Kochi metro project is the first metro system in the country which connects rail, road and water transport facilities. It is also the first metro rail system in India to be operated using the Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system, which requires minimum human intervention. The Kochi Water Metro is integrated with the Kochi Metro, which also serves as a feeder service to the suburbs along the rivers where transport accessibility is limited.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) is a ministry of the Government of India with executive authority over the formulation and administration of the rules and regulations and laws relating to the housing and urban development in India. The ministry was under the charge of Venkaiah Naidu and was given to Hardeep Singh Puri when Naidu was elected Vice President of India. The Ministry became independent from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation in 2004, but was later re-merged with it in 2017.
Bengaluru Suburban Railway is an under-construction suburban rail network for the city of Bangalore. A suburban rail system for the city was first proposed in 1983. Since then, several different route proposals were made but no suburban rail project took shape. It was finally approved in the 2019 Railway Budget.

The Kirti Nagar metro station is an interchange station between the Blue Line and Green Line of Delhi Metro. It is one of the eastward terminal stations of the Green Line, the other being Inderlok, and was opened as a part of a small 3.41 km (2.12 mi) branch from this station to Ashok Park Main station on 27 August 2011. This allowed passengers to easily transfer between the Red Line and Blue Line of the network.
Vyttila Mobility Hub is an integrated transit terminal in the city of Kochi. It is designed as a converging point of various forms of public transportation, such as local and long-distance buses, metro rail and inland water transport. It is planned over an area of 37 acres (150,000 m2) in Vyttila, making it one of the largest bus termini in India.
Thiruvananthapuram Metro is a proposed rapid transit system in the city of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of the Indian state of Kerala. Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala, is all set to have its metro system. Earlier, there was a plan to build a light metro system in the city. However, the plan was later changed to a conventional metro system.
Nagpur Metro is a rapid transit system for the city of Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. Phase I of the metro project cost was estimated to cost ₹8,650 crore but the final project cost incurred was ₹9,279 crore (US$1.1 billion). In February 2014, the Government of Maharashtra gave approval for the Metro project, while the Government of India's Ministry of Urban Development had given "In Principle" approval for the project. On 20 August 2014, Union Cabinet gave approval for the development of the project, and the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone on 21 August. Construction began on 31 May 2015, with trial run beginning on 30 September 2017.
The Noida Metro is a rapid transit system connecting the twin cities of Noida and Greater Noida in Gautam Buddh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, India. The metro network consists of one line, with a total length of 29.7 kilometres (18.5 mi) serving 21 stations. The system has all elevated stations using standard-gauge tracks.
The Greater Nashik Metro or Metro NEO is a proposed rapid transit system in the Nashik Metropolitan Region. The system is proposed to reduce traffic congestion as well as provide direct connectivity to Nashik city from its suburbs. Urban rail transit in Africa has emerged as a growing form of transit due to rapid urbanization that has occurred in recent decades across the continent. Some of these transit systems are older and more developed, such as the metro in Cairo which opened in 1987. Others such as the light-rail system in Addis Ababa are much more recent, which opened in 2015. A variety of technologies are being used ranging from light-rail, bus rapid-transit, and commuter-rail etc. Africa for several decades saw minimal investment in rail infrastructure, but in recent years due to urban population growth and improved financing options, investment in rail networks has increased.
The Delhi Metroneo is a planned 19.09 km (11.86 mi) Metrolite system with 21 stations that will connect Kirti Nagar to Bamnoli Village via Mayapuri, Hari Nagar, Tihar Jail, Dwarka Sector 2, Sector 7, Sector 6, Sector 20, and Sector 23, and the Dwarka ECC.Earlier the corridor was planned as a Metrolite but in November 2020, the project was cancelled, replacing the corridor with Metro Neo by the DMRC officials. It will be designed as per MoHUA's Metrolite specifications, and will be much cheaper to construct because of its lower speeds and carrying capacities compared to regular metros. Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this line was approved by DMRC's board in October 2019, and is currently awaiting the Delhi Government's approval.
Nagpur broad-gauge Metro is a commuter rail project planned for the city of Nagpur and extending up to adjacent areas of Wardha, Yavatmal, Narkhed, Ramtek, Bhandara, Amravati, Wadsa and Chhindwara in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, India. This project will be executed by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited. According to some Government officials first broad gauge metro will run in December 2023 on Nagpur to Yavatmal line via Wardha.And inauguration will be taken place in hand of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Metrolite is a light rail (LRT) urban transit system being planned in India for cities with lower ridership projection and as a feeder system for the existing metro systems. It will cater to lower passenger capacity at a reduced cost than a metro line. It will have dedicated tracks, separated from the road.
Madurai Metro, is a proposed rapid transit system for Madurai, Tamil Nadu. It arose from a Madurai Metrolite system, part of a major expansion of public transport in the city and one of the projects devised by the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J.Jayalalithaa.
The Jammu Metro is a proposed light rail transit system for the city of Jammu in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The project has been proposed by the Housing and Urban Development Department of the Government of Jammu and Kashmir and is estimated to cost Rs. 4825 crores in phase 1. The proposed system will have a total route length of 43.50 km, consisting of 4 lines and 22 stations, and will be completed in two phases. The expected completion date for the project is 2026.
