Republican candidate Phillips Lee Goldsborough defeated Democratic candidate Arthur Pue Gorman Jr.; Goldsborough was the second Republican governor of Maryland since the end of Reconstruction. The Digges Amendment, which attempted to disenfranchise African Americans in Maryland, was concurrently defeated.

Phillips Lee Goldsborough I, was an American Republican politician who was the 47th Governor of Maryland from 1912 to 1916 and represented the state in the United States Senate from 1929 to 1935.
Francis Preston Blair Lee was a Democratic member of the United States Senate, representing the State of Maryland from 1914 to 1917. He was also the great-grandson of American patriot Richard Henry Lee, and grandfather of Acting Governor of Maryland Blair Lee III. Lee was named after his maternal grandfather, Francis Preston Blair.
