Paul Spyros Sarbanes was an American politician and attorney. A member of the Democratic Party from Maryland, he served in both chambers of the United States Congress as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1971 to 1977 and as a member of the United States Senate from 1977 to 2007. Sarbanes was the longest-serving senator in the History of Maryland until he was surpassed by Barbara Mikulski by a single day when her term ended on January 3, 2017. He was the first Greek American senator.
The 1970 United States Senate elections was an election for the United States Senate. It took place on November 3, with the 33 seats of Class 1 contested in regular elections. Special elections were also held to fill vacancies. These races occurred in the middle of Richard Nixon's first term as president. The Democrats lost a net of three seats, while the Republicans and the Conservative Party of New York picked up one net seat each, and former Democrat Harry F. Byrd Jr. was re-elected as an independent.
Joseph Davies Tydings was an American lawyer and politician from Maryland. A member of the Democratic Party, he was most notable for his service as a member of the United States Senate for only a single term from 1965 to 1971.
John Glenn Beall Jr. was an American Republican politician and businessman from the U.S. state of Maryland who served in both chambers of the United States Congress for one term each, a member of the United States House of Representatives representing Maryland's 6th congressional district from 1969 to 1971, and as a member of the United States Senate from 1971 to 1977. He was also a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1962 to 1968.
James Glenn Beall was an American businessman and politician. A member of the Republican Party, he served as a U.S. Representative (1943–1953) and a U.S. Senator (1953–1965) from Maryland.
