List of United States Senate election results by state

Last updated

The following table shows regularly-scheduled United States Senate elections by state by year. The table does not include appointments or special elections, though it does include elections that occurred upon a state delegation's admission or readmission to the Senate. The table also includes elections that filled vacancies to unexpired terms that had never been filled due to legislative deadlock or an elected candidate's failure to qualify. The table does not denote post-election party switching. Note that, particularly prior to the ratification of the 17th Amendment in 1913, many regular elections took place in odd years rather than in the preceding even years.

Solid South 1877–1964 U.S. Democratic voting bloc

The Solid South was the electoral voting bloc for the Democratic Party in the Southern United States between the end of the Reconstruction era in 1877 and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. During this period, the Democratic Party controlled southern state legislatures and most local, state and federal officeholders in the South were Democrats. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, Southern Democrats disenfranchised nearly all blacks in all the former Confederate states. This resulted in a one-party system, in which a candidate's victory in Democratic primary elections was tantamount to election to the office itself. White primaries were another means that the Democrats used to consolidate their political power, excluding blacks from voting.

New York is a Democratic stronghold and is considered one of the "Big Three" Democratic strongholds alongside California and Illinois. The following table indicates the party of elected officials in the U.S. state of New York:

1860–61 United States House of Representatives elections House elections for the 37th U.S. Congress

The 1860–61 United States House of Representatives elections were held on various dates in various states between August 6, 1860, and October 24, 1861, before or after the first session of the 37th United States Congress convened on July 4, 1861. The number of House seats initially increased to 239 when California was apportioned an extra one, but these elections were affected by the outbreak of the American Civil War and resulted in over 56 vacancies.

Split-ticket voting is when a voter in an election votes for candidates from different political parties when multiple offices are being decided by a single election, as opposed to straight-ticket voting, where a voter chooses candidates from the same political party for every office up for election. Split-ticket voting can occur in certain mixed-member systems which allow for it, such as mixed-member proportional and parallel voting systems.

Tennessee's politics are currently dominated by the Republican Party. Republicans currently hold both of the state's U.S. Senate seats, a majority of Congressional seats, and the state legislature. Democratic strength is largely concentrated in Nashville, Memphis, and parts of Knoxville, Chattanooga, Clarksville, Murfreesboro, and Jackson. Several suburban areas of Nashville and Memphis also contain significant Democratic minorities.

Washington ratified its constitution and held its first state elections in 1889, the year it was admitted to the union as a state. It established the positions of governor, lieutenant governor, Secretary of State, attorney general, state treasurer, state auditor, Commissioner of Public Lands, and Superintendent of Public Instruction. The position of insurance commissioner was legislatively established in 1907. All positions are elected to four-year terms, concurrent with presidential elections. Washington is one of three states that elects nine separate statewide officials, while six others elect ten.

The following tables indicate the historic party affiliation of elected officials in the U.S. state of West Virginia, including: Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, State Auditor, State Treasurer, and State Agriculture Commissioner. The tables also indicate the historical party composition in the State Senate, State House of Delegates, Supreme Court of Appeals, State delegation to the U.S. Senate, and the State delegation to the U.S. House of Representatives. For years in which a presidential election was held, the tables indicate which party's nominees received the state's electoral votes.

1862–63 United States Senate elections

The 1862–63 United States Senate elections were held on various dates in various states, occurring during the American Civil War. As these U.S. Senate elections were prior to the ratification of the Seventeenth Amendment in 1913, senators were chosen by state legislatures. Senators were elected over a wide range of time throughout 1862 and 1863, and a seat may have been filled months late or remained vacant due to legislative deadlock. In these elections, terms were up for the senators in Class 1.

1860 United States elections

The 1860 United States elections elected the members of the 37th United States Congress. The election marked the start of the Third Party System and precipitated the Civil War. The Republican Party won control of the presidency and both houses of Congress, making it the fifth party to accomplish such a feat. The election is widely considered to be a realigning election.

Notes

 1. Candidates from two different parties were elected. This occasionally occurred when a state delegation was first admitted or re-admitted to the Senate. Unless otherwise noted, the split was between the Republican and Democratic parties.
 2. Includes all candidates elected by Unionist parties.
 3. There is no consensus definition for the beginning or ending date of the Sixth Party System.
 4. Two Democrats were elected in 1858, but a Republican replaced one of the Democrats in an 1859 election.
 5. Two Republicans were elected in 1896, but a Democrat replaced a Republican in an 1897 election.
 6. Elected by the Restored Government of Virginia.
 7. The Virginia legislature elected two Unionists in 1865, but the Senate refused to seat either candidate.
 8. 1 2 Note that these elections are also part of the Sixth Party System.
