Urban local body elections to 12 municipal corporations and 75 municipal councils and nagar panchayats in the state of Andhra Pradesh were held on 10 March 2021. [1]

Contents

Elections to the remaining Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats are not held due to issues like court cases, delay in preparation of electoral rolls, problems in delimitation of wards and creation of new bodies.

Background

The elections were previously scheduled on March 23 were post-poned due to COVID-19 pandemic in India. The election process will be continued from the previous nominations filed. [2] The elections will be held in 12 municipal corporations and 75 municipalities and nagara panchaytis. Elections will not be conducted in Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation, Nellore Municipal Corporation, Srikakulam Municipal Corporation and 29 municipalities/nagara panchayatis.

A municipal corporation is a type of local government in India which administers urban areas with a population of more than one million. The growing population and urbanization of various Indian cities highlighted the need for a type of local governing body that could provide services such as healthcare, education, housing and transport by collecting property taxes and administering grants from the state government.

Local government in India is governmental jurisdiction below the level of the state. Local self-government means that residents in towns, villages and rural settlements are the people who elect local councils and their heads authorising them to solve the important issues. India is a federal republic with three spheres of government: union, state and local. The 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments give recognition and protection to local governments and in addition each state has its own local government legislation. Since 1992, local government in India takes place in two very distinct forms. Urban localities, covered in the 74th amendment to the Constitution, have Municipality but derive their powers from the individual state governments, while the powers of rural localities have been formalized under the panchayati raj system, under the 73rd amendment to the Constitution.

Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission is a Constitutional authority agency of Andhra Pradesh, India. It was formed under the Articles 243-K and 243-ZA of Constitution of India. It conducts the Rural and Urban Local Body Elections in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

Municipal elections were held in the Indian state of Punjab on 14 February 2021; the result was declared on 17 February. The elections are scheduled for 117 urban local bodies, including 8 municipal corporations and 109 municipal councils and nagar panchayats. Elections were originally scheduled to be held in October 2020, but were delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Elections to local bodies in Andhra Pradesh are being held in four phases in rural areas (panchayats) in February 2021 viz. 9 February 2021, 13 February 2021, 17 February 2021 and 21 February 2021 covering 13 districts. In the first phase, 29,732 polling stations were set up.

The state of Andhra Pradesh held urban local bodies elections on 30 March 2014. This included 10 Municipal Corporations, and 145 Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats. Elections in the remaining bodies were not held due to issues such as court cases, delays in the preparation of electoral rolls, problems in the delimitation of wards, and the creation of new bodies.

The 2021 Vizianagaram Municipal Corporation election was an Indian community election that was scheduled for 10 March 2021 to elect members to all 50 wards of the municipal corporation.

The 2021 Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation election were held on 10 March 2021 to elect members to all 98 wards of the municipal corporation. The ruling YSRCP party was able to cross the magic figure and won the GVMC Elections 2021. Of 98 wards, YSRCP won 58 wards, TDP won 30 wards, Janasena Party won 4 wards, BJP won 1 ward, CPI, CPM 1 each and 3 wards are won by Independents.

The 2021 Eluru Municipal Corporation election was held on 10 March 2021 to elect members to all 50 wards of the municipal corporation.

The 2017 Kakinada Municipal Corporation election was held on 10 August 2017. Its purpose was to elect members for all 48 wards of the municipal corporation for this municipality in India. After three decades of running, the Telugu Desam Party won the election, securing 32 of the 48 seats.

The 2021 Ongole Municipal Corporation election was held on 10 March 2021 to elect members to all 98 wards of the municipal corporation.

Municipal elections were held in Uttar Pradesh in two phases on 4 and 11 May 2023 to elect members of 760 municipalities - 17 Nagar Nigams, 199 Nagar Palika Parishad and 544 Nagar Panchayats.

Municipal elections are scheduled to be held in the Indian state of Punjab in January 2024. The elections are scheduled for 46 urban local bodies, including 5 municipal corporations and 41 municipal councils and nagar panchayats.
