Diesel Loco Shed, Pune is an engine shed located in Pune, Maharashtra in India. It is located east of Pune Junction, falling under Pune Railway Division. [1] Of the three loco sheds in the Central Railway zone, this is the largest among them followed by Kurla and Kalyan. [2] [3]

History and developments

It was on 13 August 1981, the then railway minister Kamalapati Tripathi inaugurated the loco shed. Now it holds around 135 locomotives of which 63 locos are operational with mail express links, (As per 2011) [4] but now it holds almost 200 locomotives.(As per 2015)

The total area covered by the Shed is 59, 825 Sq. m and the covered area is 11, 386 Sq. m. The total berthing capacity of the Shed is 22 Locos.

Operations

The shed is headed by Sr. DME (Diesel), has about 750 employees in different ranks in the day-to-day operations of the shed, which include periodical overhaul, maintenance and repair works. The locos of this shed were thoroughly traverses over entire western India for passenger and freight services. The operations of the shed is divided into various sections, for proper functioning. Future infrastructure development plans

  1. In order to home the new generation, high horse power WDG4 Locos, Light schedule bay no. 1 & 2 is being extended by 12 metres towards Miraj end which will increase the berthing capacity by 02 locomotives.
  2. No. 1 & 2 service line pit depth will be increased and steel columns will be provided in place of RCC columns at distance of one meter which will increase he accessibility of under gearing.
  3. Roof ventilators will be provided for air ventilation.
  4. In Works Programme 2012-13 the following machinery & plants have been proposed for EMD locomotives;

The EMD GT46PAC or WDP4 is a passenger-hauling diesel-electric locomotive with AC electric transmission designed by General Motors Electro-Motive Division and built by both GM-EMD and under license by Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) of Varanasi, India for Indian Railways as the classes WDP4, WDP4B and WDP4D. Broadmeadow Locomotive Depot

Broadmeadow Locomotive Depot was a large locomotive depot consisting of two roundhouse buildings and associated facilities constructed by the New South Wales Government Railways adjacent to the marshalling yard on the Main Northern line at Broadmeadow. Construction of the locomotive depot at Broadmeadow commenced in 1923 to replace the existing crowded loco sheds at Woodville Junction at Hamilton, with the depot opening in March 1924. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.

Indian locomotive class YDM-4

The class YDM-4 is Indian Railways' workhorse diesel locomotive. The first units were imported fully built from the American Locomotive Company (Alco) in 1961. Since 1968, it has been manufactured in India by the Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Varanasi. The model name stands for metre gauge (Y), diesel (D), mixed traffic (M) engine. The YDM-4 has been the most successful diesel locomotive in the metre gauge operation of Indian Railways. The YDM-4A is a variant of the YDM-4 supplied by MLW. Originally equipped with vacuum brakes. Some were later equipped with dual brakes, particularly those working in the Northeast Frontier Railway were retrofitted with dual brake system by Lumding shed. The YDM-4 locos have a maximum speed of 100 km/h (62 mph), restricted to 85 km/h (53 mph).
