Handsworth & Smethwick was an intermediate station on the Great Western Railway's London Paddington to Birkenhead via Birmingham Snow Hill line. It was opened in 1854. [1]
The station's architecture was reminiscent of that of other stations and was almost exactly the same as Wednesbury and West Bromwich stations.
The station closed in 1972, [1] with the line and much of the site has been demolished.
In 1999, Handsworth Booth Street tram stop was opened on the site of the station, as part of the Midland Metro line. The only signs of the original building are the station toilets, whose doorways are blocked up, on Booth Street.

It has platforms on both lines, allowing interchange between them. The high level line passes over the low level line at a right angle on a bridge. Opened in 1854 as "Soho" station, its name was changed to "Soho and Winson Green" in May 1893, and finally to "Winson Green" on 14 June 1965, following the closure of a nearby station of that name. It was elaborately decorated and had 4 platforms. In 1972, the station closed, along with the entire line.

Handsworth Wood railway station was a railway station in Handsworth Wood, Birmingham, England, on the London and North Western Railway's rail link between the Chase Line and the West Coast Main Line. The station operated between 1896 and 1941, and like neighbouring station Soho Road, closed during the Second World War, as a result of decreasing use by passengers who possibly found the new 16 bus route more convenient.
The Stourbridge Railway was a small independent railway company in England which existed between 1860, and 1870 when it was taken over by the Great Western Railway (GWR). The company built a line from the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway (OWWR) at Stourbridge Junction to Smethwick, where it joined the Stour Valley Line at Galton Junction.
The Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Dudley Railway was an English railway company promoted to connect those places by rail. It was authorised by Parliament in 1846. It became apparent that it would be advantageous to merge with the Great Western Railway. The rival London and North Western Railway went to great lengths to frustrate the amalgamation, but ultimately failed, and the merger took place in 1847.
