The Hillsdale district is a neighborhood in the southwest section of Portland, Oregon, United States. It is centered on the Hillsdale retail and business area, a series of strip malls on SW Capitol Highway between SW Sunset Boulevard and SW Bertha Boulevard. It is home to the Hillsdale Farmer's Market, which takes place on Sundays during the summer and every other Sunday during the winter. Hillsdale is also home to Oregon's first brewpub, with the opening of McMenamins Hillsdale Brewery in 1985. [2]

A cornerstone of the neighborhood is the Hillsdale Library, which opened in 1957. The building closed in 2001 for remodeling, and reopened March 4, 2004. When completed, the library was named a Certified Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Building. It was the first LEED building in Portland. As of 2019, the Hillsdale Library is the fifth-busiest branch in Multnomah County. [3]

Hillsdale borders Southwest Hills, Healy Heights, and Homestead on the north, South Portland on the east, South Burlingame and Multnomah on the south, and Hayhurst and Bridlemile on the west.

Oregon Route 10 connects Hillsdale to Downtown Portland to the north and to Raleigh Hills and Beaverton to the west.

Hillsdale is the center of Portland's Jewish community. [4] [5]

Education

Hillsdale's public education is covered by Portland Public Schools. Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School is located in the neighborhood, which serves it and the surrounding area. [6] Other schools in the area are Rieke Elementary, which is adjacent to the high school, and Robert Gray Middle School.

Old Town Chinatown is the official Chinatown of the northwest section of Portland, Oregon. The Willamette River forms its eastern boundary, separating it from the Lloyd District and the Kerns and Buckman neighborhoods. It includes the Portland Skidmore/Old Town Historic District and the Portland New Chinatown/Japantown Historic District, which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has been referred to as the "skid row" of Portland.

South Portland is a long, narrow neighborhood just south of Downtown Portland, Oregon, hemmed in between the Willamette River and the West Hills. It stretches from I-405 and the Marquam Bridge on the north, to SW Canby St. and the Sellwood Bridge in the south. The Willamette forms the eastern boundary, and SW Barbur Blvd. most of the western boundary. Hayhurst is a neighborhood in the southwest section of Portland, Oregon, on the border with Washington County. It borders Raleigh Hills and Beaverton, and the Portland neighborhoods of Bridlemile, Hillsdale, and Maplewood and Multnomah.

Bridlemile is a Southwest Portland, Oregon neighborhood in the West Hills. The Portland city boundary runs through the neighborhood such that the southern part of the neighborhood is within Portland proper, but the northern portion is unincorporated Multnomah County. The portion within Portland city limits extends into Washington County in two places.

South Burlingame is a neighborhood in the Southwest section of Portland, Oregon. It is bordered by Multnomah to the west, Hillsdale and South Portland to the north, the River View Cemetery to the east, and Markham, Marshall Park, and Collins View to the south.

Stephens Creek, a 2-mile (3 km) tributary of the Willamette River, flows entirely within the city of Portland in the U.S. state of Oregon. Beginning in the neighborhood of Hillsdale, it runs generally east through residential and commercial neighborhoods as well as patches of forest and parkland to join the Willamette slightly north of the Sellwood Bridge. Its course passes under Interstate 5 and down the canyon followed by Southwest Taylors Ferry Road. Stephens Creek enters the river at Willamette Moorage Park, which is part of a 35-acre (14 ha) group of natural areas called the South Portland Riverbank. The natural areas include Butterfly Park and Willamette Park as well as the moorage park and other public land parcels.

The Hillsdale Library is a branch of the Multnomah County Library, located in Hillsdale, Portland, Oregon. The branch offers the Multnomah County Library catalog of two million books, periodicals and other materials. The original library building at this location opened in 1957 and was replaced by a new building on the same site in 2004. The new library, a green building designed to minimize environmental impacts, has 12,000 square feet (1,100 m2) of floor space and a storage capacity of 75,000 volumes.

The Barbur Boulevard Transit Center is a TriMet transit center located at 9750 SW Barbur Boulevard, near the intersection with Capitol Highway in southwest Portland, Oregon. Barbur TC is proposed to be a future stop on the MAX Green Line as part of the SW Corridor MAX Project, which would extend the Green Line from its current terminus at the PSU South stations southward to Bridgeport Village in Tualatin.
