Position of the community within Powys

Honddu Isaf ("Lower Honddu") is a community in Powys, situated immediately to the north of Brecon in the valley of the lower River Honddu, on either side of the B4520 road to Builth Wells. It is in the historic county of Brecknockshire.

Description

The community is rural, and extends 9 km from north to south. It includes (in downstream order) the settlements of Castell Madoc (various spellings), Lower Chapel, Pwllgloyw, Garthbrengi, Sarnau and Llandefaelog Fach. In the census of 2011 the population was 445. [1]

There are two churches in the community which continue to hold services: one at Llandefaelog and one in Lower Chapel. There are also two chapels, one in Lower Chapel and a second between Lower Chapel and Pwllgloyw adjacent to the B4520. There is a pub in Pwllgloyw, but no retail premises and no concentrations of business premises in the area.

There is an ancient motte at Castell Madoc. There are a number of other antiquities within the community, including a mansion at Castell Madoc, built in 1588 on a site that goes back to the 11th century.
