Jailer 2 is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language action comedy film written and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. It is produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures. A sequel to Jailer (2023), the film stars Rajinikanth reprising his role as the titular character, and Yogi Babu.
Prior to the release of the original film in 2023, Nelson expressed interest in making sequels to his films. In September 2024, the director confirmed a sequel to Jailer, while the Sun Pictures announced officially in January 2025. Principal photography commenced that March in Chennai. The film will have music composed by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Vijay Kartik Kannan and editing by R. Nirmal.
Prior to the release of Jailer (2023), Nelson Dilipkumar revealed intentions of making sequels to his previous films, which made reports question if this film would have a sequel. [1] After the film's success, reports of a potential sequel resurfaced, [2] though Nelson was unsure on whether he would direct the sequel as his subsequent project. [3] Later, Nelson began working on the script for the sequel by January 2024. [4] The film's producer, Kalanithi Maran of Sun Pictures, paid him an advance of ₹55–60 crore (US$6.3–6.9 million) for the film. [a] The film was reported to be tentatively titled Hukum—named after a song from the first film, [7] [8] before the official title Jailer 2 was announced on 14 January 2025. [9]
Nelson took nearly over a year for developing the script, which was completed by December 2024. [4] [10] The team shot and completed the promotional teaser for the film by 6 December 2024 at EVP Film City in Chennai, [11] which was officially released on 14 January 2025, coinciding with Pongal. [12] [13]
Cinematographer Vijay Kartik Kannan returned for the sequel after working on the predecessor. [12] [14] Nelson further renewed his norm technicians—music composer Anirudh Ravichander, editor R. Nirmal, production designer D. R. K. Kiran—who also worked on the predecessor as well; [12] stunt choreographer Chethan DSouza and visual effects supervisor Yugandhar T. also joined the technical crew. [15]
By late-December 2024, Nelson began location scouting for the film. [16] Initially, the film was set to begin production in late-2024 in order to be released during 2025, as it would mark Rajinikanth's 50th year in the film industry. [17] But the plans were rescinded owing to pre-production delays, resulting in the film's eventual commencement being pushed to March 2025. [16]
Yogi Babu confirmed his presence in the film, reprising his role from the predecessor. [18] Reportedly Nelson prioritised on writing comic subplots between Babu and Rajinikanth during the pre-production. [6] It was also reported that Nandamuri Balakrishna was being cast in an important role. [19]
Principal photography began with the first schedule on 10 March 2025 in Chennai. [20] It was reported that sequences featuring only Rajinikanth were to be filmed at first for around 15 to 20 days. [21] [22] A large village set was reportedly erected at a film city for this schedule. [23] On 20 March, previous directors of Rajinikanth, Karthik Subbaraj and Lokesh Kanagaraj, who respectively directed the actor in Petta (2019) and Coolie (2025) both under Sun Pictures' production, visited the sets and a still of them along with Rajinikanth and Nelson was posted on social media and went viral. [24] [25]
The soundtrack is composed by Nelson's normal composer Anirudh Ravichander. "Hukum Reloaded" was the track featured on the announcement teaser that released on 14 January 2025. The audio rights were acquired by Sun Pictures's own company. [26] [27]

The film's announcement teaser was screened in major single-screen theatres and multiplexes across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and parts of North India, in conjunction with its release on YouTube on 14 January 2025, coinciding with Pongal. [28] [29] Rumors that Rajinikanth used a body double for the action sequences of the teaser were dismissed after a behind-the-scenes video was released. [30]
