During the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Legea sponsored the North Korean soccer team. A works team, sometimes also referred to as factory team and company team, is a sports team that is financed and run by a manufacturer or other business, institution, or organization in a broad sense. Works teams have very close ties with their main sponsor and owner, and usually incorporate its logo, its name, or both, in the sport club or team logo. Sometimes, works teams contain or are entirely made up of employees of the supporting company. In motorsport, a works team or factory team is a manufacturer that builds its own car or motorbike including the engine. When they meet certain criteria, college and university teams competing in professional leagues and championships have been considered works teams as well. Company teams are owned, sponsored and managed by companies in order to raise awareness about those companies' brands, being usually named after those companies and brands as part and parcel of those companies' marketing strategy. Sometimes a single company owns more than one team named after it competing in different sports or even in the same sport. Many works teams, factory teams or student teams were started to give staff or students some exercise and entertainment and eventually morphed into professional teams without actually having workers, factory workers or students in their squads, but the moniker or label works team, factory team and student team remained unchanged to describe them due to their historical background, including the founders, official name, nicknames and the crest they use.

A total of 22 teams contested the league: 16 returning from the 2014–15 season, 4 promoted from Lega Pro, and 2 relegated from Serie A. Vacancies created by the bankruptcy of Serie A-relegated Parma and the demotion of Catania to Lega Pro due to match fixing allowed Brescia to remain in the league despite being relegated. Furthermore, Teramo was due to participate to Serie B but due to the allegations for match-fixing, the Courts decided to relegate Teramo in the last place of Lega Pro of the previous season. After the demotion of Catania, Virtus Entella was readmitted into Serie B as the best team of the relegated teams from the previous season. Furthermore, Ascoli was promoted into the championship after finishing second in Lega Pro Group B, second after Teramo before being stripped of the title for the match-fixing scandal.
