The 2005 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A was the 49th edition of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. Corinthians claiming their fourth national title. The season officially kicked off on April 23, 2005 and concluded on December 4.
The 2006 season was São Paulo's 77th season in the club's existence. São Paulo finished in the second position in the Campeonato Paulista, only one point behind the winners Santos. A year after winning the Copa Libertadores, São Paulo once again challenged for the cup, being defeated by Internacional in a second final between Brazilian teams in a row, having beaten Atlético Paranaense in the previous edition. São Paulo lost by 2–1 in the Morumbi and drew in 2–2 on away second leg, thus coming in second place. As the current champions of Copa Libertadores, São Paulo played the Recopa Sudamericana versus Boca Juniors and was defeated by 4–3 on aggregate. Tricolor won the Campeonato Brasileiro fifteen years after their last title, in 1991 and became national champions for the fourth time, securing the title in 36th matchweek against Atlético Paranaense in the Morumbi with a 1–1 draw.

São Paulo played Campeonato Paulista, State of São Paulo league, being defeated in a single match quarterfinal by São Caetano, 0–2, at home field due advantage points in first phase. After 10 years the club return to play the continental tournament, Copa Libertadores, that were champions in 1992, 1993 and runners-up in 1994 the last participation before 2004, reached this time the semifinals where they lost to Once Caldas in away game for 1–2 after a 0–0 in Morumbi. In Campeonato Brasileiro ending the 46 rounds with a third position, but the featured unpleasant happened in 38th match against São Caetano on 27 October when the defender of adversary Serginho fell in the field near the small area of São Caetano's defence suffering a fatal cardiac arrest at 60 minutes. With announcement of his death the match was finished and the remainder was played on 3 November. In Copa Sudamericana Tricolor was eliminated by rival Santos in second stage.
The 2001 season was São Paulo's 72nd season since club's existence. São Paulo won the Torneio Rio-São Paulo for the first time beating Botafogo in an aggregated score by 6-2. In Campeonato Paulista the club finished in 8th place. Tricolor reach the Quarter-finals at the Campeonato Brasileiro and Copa do Brasil losing to Atlético Paranaense in the league and to Grêmio at the cup. São Paulo was eliminated at the group stage in the Copa Mercosur and became a runners-up at the Copa dos Campeões after was defeated by Flamengo.
