Castelli is an Italian brand of sports clothing and accessories based in Fonzaso in Veneto. Castelli is a company specializing in cycling and triathlon clothing. Castelli brand products are characterized by a logo representing a white scorpion inside a red circle.
In 1876, Gianni Vittore opened a shop in Milan where he made clothes by hand for businessmen, for the Milanese ballet troupe and football teams such as Milan and Juventus. Alfredo Binda, winner of the Giro d'Italia several times, was one of his customers.
In 1935, Armando Castelli joined Gianni's staff, in the same year he decided to buy the company where he worked and to keep Gianni Vittore's clientele, including Gino Bartali and Fausto Coppi. [1]
Castelli expanded the production by supplying various teams and in the following years even the great stars of cycling such as Louison Bobet, Rik Van Looy and Jacques Anquetil wore Castelli clothing.
In 1948 Maurizio, Armando's son, was born, and from an early age was captivated by sportswear, learning the trade from his father. The two did not get along for a long time; the traditionalist ways of the father clashed with the creativity of the son, so Maurizio in 1974 gave life to his own company which he called Castelli and choosing a scorpion as his emblem.
In 1977, he had the intuition to introduce Lycra, a revolutionary elastic material at that time used only by skiers, for cycling shorts. Inspired by the success of the Lycra shorts, Maurizio continued to apply his skills in cycling. Champions such as Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Francesco Moser, Giuseppe Saronni, Ercole Baldini and Silvio Martinello chose Castelli clothing for their races. Maurizio was a pioneer of sublimation dyeing which made it possible to have colours, logos and graphics on a technical fabric. On 9 November 1979, Castelli was awarded the gold Discobolus, a prestigious award from Corriere dello Sport – Stadio.
In 1981, Maurizio dressed his cyclists in turquoise Lycra shorts, when at the time only black shorts were allowed, so the riders showed up at the starting line creating an unexpected explosion of colour but then had to change their shorts.
In 1995, Maurizio Castelli died suddenly at the age of 47 due to a heart attack while cycling on the Cipressa. In 1996, at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Paola Pezzo wore Castelli, winning the gold medal in mountain bike. Castelli was the first brand to embark on an entirely women's collection for cycling. In 1997 Castelli revolutionised the cycling seat pad, giving life to Progetto Y.
1999, marked Castelli's return to professional cycling with the Spanish team ONCE-Deutsche Bank. In the following decade, riders such as Laurent Jalabert, Carlos Sastre and Andrea Peron wore Castelli, as well as many important teams such as Roslotto, Refin Ceramiche, Tenax, Tinkoff and Saunier Duval.
In 2003, Giordano Cremonese, president of Manifattura Valcismon, the parent company of the Sportful brand, decided to buy Castelli and transfer it from Rosate to Fonzaso.
In 2009, Castelli became part of the supplier brands of Cervélo TestTeam which included, among others, Carlos Sastre, Thor Hushovd and Heinrich Haussler. In 2017 Castelli became an official sponsor of Team Sky, which later became Team Ineos in 2019. In 2018 they signed a deal to sponsor the Giro d'Italia's jerseys signing a four-year contract. [2]
In 2021, they announced they would be ending their sponsorship with Team Ineos and began sponsoring Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team starting in 2022. [3]
The general classification in the Giro d'Italia is the most important classification of the Giro d'Italia, which determines who is the overall winner. It is therefore considered more important than secondary classifications as the points classification or the mountains classification.
The 1990 Giro d'Italia was the 73rd edition of the race. It started off in Bari on May 18 with a 13 km (8.1 mi) individual time trial. The race came to a close with a mass-start stage that began and ended in Milan on June 6. Twenty-two teams entered the race, which was won by the Italian Gianni Bugno of the Château d'Ax–Salotti team. Second and third respectively were the Frenchman Charly Mottet and the Italian rider, Marco Giovannetti. Bugno wore the pink jersey as leader in the general classification from the first to the last stage.
The 1977 Giro d'Italia was the 60th running of the Giro, one of cycling's Grand Tours. It started in Bacoli, on 20 May, with a 7 km (4.3 mi) prologue and concluded in Milan, on 13 June, with a 122 km (75.8 mi) mass-start stage. A total of 130 riders from thirteen teams entered the 22-stage race, that was won by Belgian Michel Pollentier of the Flandria team. The second and third places were taken by Italians Francesco Moser and Gianbattista Baronchelli, respectively. Freddy Maertens won 7 of the first 11 stages before abandoning due to a crash on Stage 8B.
The 1974 Giro d'Italia was the 57th running of the Giro, one of cycling's Grand Tours. It started in Vatican City, on 16 May, with a 164 km (102 mi) stage and concluded in Milan, on 8 June, with 257 km (160 mi) leg. A total of 140 riders from fourteen teams entered the 22-stage race, that was won by Belgian Eddy Merckx of the Molteni team. The second and third places were taken by Italians Gianbattista Baronchelli (Scic) and Felice Gimondi (Bianchi), respectively.
Cervélo TestTeam is a former professional cycling team, whose license was held in Switzerland by the cycling management company Cycling United Racing. The team's title sponsor was Cervélo, a Canadian manufacturer of bicycle frames that previously exclusively supplied CSC–Saxo Bank. They competed in 2010 as a UCI Professional Continental team, but folded after the season.
Ineos Grenadiers is a British professional cycling team that competes at the UCI WorldTeam level. The team is based at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester, England, with a logistics base in Deinze, Belgium. The team is managed by British Cycling's former performance director, Sir Dave Brailsford. The company Tour Racing Ltd. is the corporate entity behind the team in all its iterations, which in line with cycling practice adopts the name of their current primary sponsor.

In July 2021, he won the gold medal in the road race at the 2020 Summer Olympics, becoming the first Ecuadorian cyclist to win a medal and only the second Ecuadorian in any sport to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games. In doing so, he became the first cyclist to achieve an Olympic road race gold medal and a podium finish in each of the three Grand Tours.

The 2020 Giro d'Italia was a road cycling stage race that took place between 3 and 25 October, after initially being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was originally to have taken place from 9 to 31 May 2020, as the 103rd edition of the Giro d'Italia, a three-week Grand Tour. The start of the 2020 Giro had been planned to take place in Budapest, Hungary, which would have been the 14th time the Giro has started outside Italy, and the first time a Grand Tour has visited Hungary.
The 2021 Giro d'Italia was the 104th edition of the Giro, a three-week Grand Tour cycling stage race. It started on 8 May and finished on 30 May. On 26 May 2019, the race organisers RCS Sport originally announced that the start of the 2021 Giro would be in Sicily, Italy. However, on 4 February 2021, RCS Sport announced that the race would instead start in Turin, with the rest of the race route being announced on 24 February 2021.

The 2023 Giro d'Italia was the 106th edition of the Giro d'Italia, a three-week Grand Tour cycling stage race. The race started on 6 May in Fossacesia and finished on 28 May in Rome. There were 3 individual time trial stages and 6 stages longer than 200 km. The race was won by Primož Roglič of Team Jumbo–Visma, taking his fourth Grand Tour victory and becoming the first Slovenian to win the Giro.
