The following list of disasters in Portugal by death toll is a list of major disasters (excluding acts of war, terrorism or crime) which occurred in Portugal in a definable incident or accident, and which resulted in at least ten casualties.

Striking the Autonomous Region of Azores on 1 January, the 1980 Azores Island earthquake killed 73 people and injured over 400, causing severe damage on the islands of Terceira and São Jorge. Measuring 6.9 on the moment magnitude scale, it also shook the islands of Pico and Faial, and resulted from a strike slip fracture, typical of other historical Azorean earthquakes.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">SATA Air Açores Flight 530M</span> Fatal aircraft crash in the Azores, 1999

SATA Air Açores Flight 530M was a Portuguese regional commuter flight operated by SATA Air Açores, that connected Ponta Delgada-João Paulo II Airport and Flores Airport, with an intermediary stop at Horta, on 11 December 1999. At 10:20 a.m., the British Aerospace BAe ATP, named Graciosa, while enroute to Horta, collided with Pico da Esperança, on the central mountains of the island of São Jorge, resulting in the deaths of all 35 people on board. It is also the deadliest aviation accident involving the British Aerospace ATP.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mário Centeno</span> Portuguese politician and banker

Mário José Gomes de Freitas Centeno is a Portuguese economist, university professor, and politician. From 2015 to 2020, he was Minister of Finance of Portugal in the government cabinet of Prime Minister António Costa of the Portuguese Socialist Party (PS). He was the president of the Eurogroup and chairman of the board of Governors of the European Stability Mechanism from 2018 to 2020. Previously, he was a board member economist of the Bank of Portugal. On 9 June 2020, he announced his resignation from the Ministry of Finance, effective 15 June. On 16 July 2020, the Council of Ministers approved Centeno's nomination for the post of Governor of the Bank of Portugal, put forward by his successor as Finance minister, João Leão. Centeno is the author or co-author of several scientific publications, books and book chapters related to his areas of interest, such as labour economics, econometrics, microeconomics and contract theory.

Presidential elections were held in Portugal on 24 January. The incumbent President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, was reelected for a second term.

The 2024 Azorean regional election was held on 4 February 2024, to determine the composition of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores. The election replaced all 57 members of the Azores Assembly, and the new members would then elect the President of the Autonomous Region.

Sporting Clube de Portugal is a Portuguese sports club based in Lisbon and founded in 1906. Sporting CP have won 23 championships, 17 Taça de Portugal, 4 Taça da Liga, 9 Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira, 4 Campeonato de Portugal and 1 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in men's football, and through its athletics department was responsible, respectively, in 1984 and 1976, for Portugal's first Olympic gold and Olympic silver medals ever, as well as for other titles in other men's and women's sports, disciplines and competitions throughout its history. Being a multi-sports club, Sporting CP has described itself as Portugal's "biggest sporting powerhouse" due to the number of titles won by its teams and athletes in several sports and sport disciplines, including in the Olympic Games.

Observador is a Portuguese online newspaper started on May 19, 2014. It is the only Portuguese-language newspaper in Portugal with a defined political orientation.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Volt Portugal</span> Political party in Portugal

Volt Portugal is a Eurofederalist party in Portugal. It is affiliated with Volt Europa and was officially registered in June 2020 as the 25th party in the country. Volt has contested several local elections and participated in the 2022 national parliamentary elections.

José Eduardo da Cunha Pacheco is a Portuguese politician from the Azores. He is the president of the Chega party in the Azores, vice-president of the party at large and a deputy in the Legislative Assembly of the Azores. He was previously a member of the CDS - People's Party.
