Tio i Topp was a radio show that first broadcast in 1961 and was the first official Swedish music chart. Initially broadcast through Sveriges Radio P2, it switched to Sveriges Radio P3 in 1964. [2] Sveriges Radio started the chart in response to criticism from the public, who felt that there wasn't enough material oriented towards a young audience on their radio stations, but also as a way to combat music charts from pirate radio stations Radio Nord and Radio Syd, who had started compiling charts during the late 1950s. [3] The idea behind the show was coined by Carl-Eiwar Carlsson and Klas Burling, who both had history of working in record shops and as such knew what records most teenagers and young adults were buying and consuming and thus wanted to lead a radio show based on this. [4]
Unlike contemporary record charts, who often compiled lists based on record sales, Tio i Topp based their list on audience reaction; each week a jury consisting of about 200 people were placed in front of a mentometer upon which 15 songs are played through speakers, after which they'd vote on the song they liked most. [2] Ten of these went to the finals while the remaining five had a chance the following show. [5] New songs were introduced to the program each week which all weren't singles; several songs that reached number one on Tio i Topp were either not released as singles or were album tracks. [6] An example of this is "Very Last Day" by the Hollies, which had been featured on their eponymous 1965 album and wasn't released as a single in most of the world; it reached number one in June 1966. [7]
This way of compiling charts also attracted criticism, who thought that records that sold well didn't get the chance. [8] This led to Sveriges Radio starting Kvällstoppen, which compiled a weekly chart based on sales rather than an audience response during the summer of 1962. [9] Both charts competed with each other throughout the 1960s and early 1970s before Tio i Topp ceased broadcasting during the summer of 1974; the growing progg grew disdain for commercialism which Tio i Topp was considered a Swedish milestone in. [5] The first song to reach number one on the chart was "I'm Gonna Knock on Your Door" by Eddie Hodges on 14 October 1961. [1] The last number one was "Sugar Baby Love" by the Rubettes on 29 June 1974. [10]

"I'll Be Doggone" is a 1965 song recorded by American soul singer Marvin Gaye and released on the Tamla label. The song talks about how a man tells his woman that he'll be "doggone" about simple things but if she did him wrong that he'd be "long gone". The song was written by Miracles members Smokey Robinson, Pete Moore and Marv Tarplin, initially for The Temptations, who rejected the song.
"Hawaii" is a song written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love for the American rock band the Beach Boys. It was recorded in July 1963 and released on their 1963 album Surfer Girl. It is one of the first Beach Boy songs that Hal Blaine played on, contributing timbales, but regular drummer Dennis Wilson still played. In January 1964, it was released as a single in Australia, becoming a top-10 hit. "Hawaii" made its way into the Beach Boys repertoire almost 50 years later.
"Let's Dance" is a 1962 hit single by Chris Montez, written and produced by Jim Lee.
"Sunny Girl" is a song written by Benny Andersson, which was recorded and released as the Swedish rock group Hep Stars' tenth single in March 1966. Their second original song after "No Response", it was the song which made Andersson believe in himself as a songwriter, with support from their manager Åke Gerhard. As a result, almost all singles by the Hep Stars following "Sunny Girl" are original compositions.
"Sandy" is a song written by Steve Brandt and Dion DiMucci, and recorded by Dion in 1962. It was first released on the album Lovers Who Wander. The song spent 11 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching number 21.
The Lee Kings was a pop group from Sweden, established in 1964 as Lenne & The Lee Kings, and scoring several hits on the Tio i Topp chart.
Åke Gerhard was a Swedish songwriter. His songs won the title for the first three years of Sweden's Melodifestival: In 1958 "Lilla stjärna" Little star sung by Alice Babs, in 1959 "Augustin" sung by Siw Malmkvist with lyrics by Harry Sandin and in 1960 "Alla andra får varann" Everyone else gets each other with lyrics by Ulf Kjellqvist.
"Bloodhound" is a song, initially written and performed by soul singer Larry Bright in 1961. Initially performed as a rhythm and blues song, it quickly garnered a reputation as a garage rock song following a cover by British rock band Downliners Sect. The most well-known and commercially successful rendition of the song was recorded by Swedish rock band Tages in 1965, who charted on both Tio i Topp and Kvällstoppen with their garage rock version of it.
"Consolation" is a song written by Swedish keyboardist Benny Andersson, first recorded as the Hep Stars thirteenth single in October 1966. The single largely left the baroque pop style sound which had dominated both their previous singles "Sunny Girl" and "Wedding", but continues the soft rock style of "I Natt Jag Drömde" and also ventures into the territory of psychedelic rock, a genre that would become prevalent the following year.
"Crazy 'Bout My Baby" is a song first written and recorded by musician Robert Mosley in 1963. His third solo single, it failed to chart, leading to it becoming his final single released. Initially an obscure single, it was brought to light by mainstream acts such as The Swinging Blue Jeans and Tages, the latter of which charted in Sweden with it.
Tages is the first seven-inch extended play by Swedish rock group Tages, a release which features four songs, two of which showcase the early songwriting talent of the band. It was initially released on 4 June 1965 in 1000 copies on Platina Records.
"Don't Turn Your Back" is a song written by bass guitarist Göran Lagerberg and guitarist Anders Töpel, first recorded by their band Tages in 1965. Produced by the Violents Rune Wallebom, the song would be featured as the lead track from their debut EP Tages released three weeks later
"I Should Be Glad" is a song by the Swedish rock band Tages, written by bassist Göran Lagerberg and rhythm guitarist Danne Larsson in 1964. Following bad press for their debut single "Sleep Little Girl", the group quickly recorded a follow-up which critics would consider good.
Platina Records was a Swedish independent record label founded in 1964 by businessman and songwriter Evert Jakobsson. The label saw great success throughout the mid-1960s with rock acts such as Tages, before turning to dansband music in the 1970s, gaining success with Flamingokvintetten and Thorleifs. After turning to pay to play in 1984, the label shut down in 1989.
Tio i Topp was a Swedish record chart and radio program broadcast by Sveriges Radio P3 between the years of 1961 and 1974. It was launched to combat pirate radio charts and was the first official Swedish record chart, predating the sales chart Kvällstoppen by a year. For a few months during the summers starting in 1962, it would turn into Sommartoppen with a separate host and a different concept. The program ceased in June 1974 following heated debates tying in with the progg movement. Both Tio i Topp and Kvällstoppen are considered official charts in Sweden during the 1960s.
"The One for You" is a song written by Swedish guitarist Danne Larsson and recorded by his group Tages in 1965. Following an intensive tour of the Sweden, while also previously having composed songs for the band, Larsson wrote the song inspired by their trip to London, allegedly about a girl he had met there. It was the first recording by Tages produced by Anders Henriksson, who would come to produce the majority of their coming output, along with being their first single recorded at Europafilm Studios in Bromma, Stockholm.
"Someone's Taken Maria Away" is a song written by Chris Andrews, initially recorded by British singer Adam Faith and his backing group the Roulettes. It was Faith's final top-40 hit in the United Kingdom, reaching number 34 on the UK Singles Chart in June 1965. However, today it is most commonly known for the version recorded by Swedish band Tom & Mick & Maniacs under the title "Somebody's Taken Maria Away" in 1967; it reached number one on both Tio i Topp and Kvällstoppen during that autumn.
Tom & Mick were a Swedish band formed in 1965 in Enköping, Sweden. They were only active for three years though managed to release an album and a handful of singles, of which "Please, Please, Please" became their first hit. During their last two active years, they were fronted by Tommy Körberg (Tom) and Michael Johansson (Mick), one of the first dual-vocalist pop groups in Sweden at the time Retrospectively, they are best known for their single "Somebody's Taken Maria Away" which topped the Swedish charts, and for starting the career of Körberg, who would go on to become one of the most well known musicians in Sweden.
Claes Ove Dieden was a Swedish singer-songwriter, best known for his cover of "Da Doo Ron Ron" which became a hit in Sweden in 1969. Several of his compositions were recorded and saw commercial success by other groups.
"There's a Blind Man Playin' Fiddle in the Street" is a song written by Swedish bass guitarist Göran Lagerberg, initially recorded by his band Tages. In December 1967, Tages released their fifth album, Studio, which largely was inspired by and saw influences from Swedish folk music; this had a major impact on Lagerberg. Inspired by the Beatles' single "Strawberry Fields Forever" / "Penny Lane" from a meeting with club owner Styrbjörn Colliander, Lagerberg composed the song in a more commercial tone than Studio, while still retaining the genre's influences. First released as a single on 8 February 1968 in Sweden, the song also received release in Denmark, Finland, Norway and the UK, where it was Tages' fourth single release.
