After the end of every competitive season, football clubs from Montenegro play in European competitions.
Teams from Montenegro have been playing on the international scene since they represented SFR Yugoslavia during the 1970s. Since 2006, Montenegrin teams have played as representatives of independent Montenegro, and qualified through the Montenegrin First League and Montenegrin Cup.
Currently, four Montenegrin clubs take part in UEFA European Cups. The champion of the First Montenegrin League plays in UEFA Champions League qualifiers. The second and third placed team from the First League play in UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers. The winner of the Montenegrin Cup also plays in the Europa Conference league.

Historically, Montenegrin football clubs played in four UEFA competitions for clubs - the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League (formerly UEFA Cup), UEFA Europa Conference League and Intertoto Cup.
The champions of Montenegro have never played in the group phase of the UEFA Champions League, and the most successful in the qualifiers was FK Zeta Golubovci in the 2007–08 season.
The best performances in the UEFA Europa League were FK Zeta who played in the playoffs, and OFK Titograd, FK Budućnost and FK Sutjeska which played in Round 3. The most successful in the Intertoto Cup was FK Budućnost Podgorica.

The Balkans Cup was a regional football competition (1960-1994) in which Montenegrin clubs participated as a representatives of SFR Yugoslavia. Teams from Montenegro which played in the Balkans Cup were FK Budućnost Podgorica and FK Sutjeska Nikšić. FK Budućnost had the biggest success, playing in the 1991 final, after eliminating Galatasaray SK.

Fudbalski Klub Budućnost Podgorica is a Montenegrin professional football club from Podgorica, Montenegro. It is competing in the Montenegrin First League. Its colours are blue and white.
Podgorica City Stadium is an all-seater multi-purpose stadium in Podgorica, Montenegro. Although its seating capacity changed over the years due to several renovations, as of 2019 it has 11,050 seats. The stadium is the home ground of the Montenegrin national football team and Budućnost.

The First League of Montenegro is the top football league in Montenegro. Founded in 2006, competition is headed by the Football Association of Montenegro. 10 teams participate in this league. The winner of the Montenegrin First League starts the qualifications for the UEFA Champions League from the second round. The second and third placed teams and Montenegrin Cup winner play in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Conference League. The last placed team is directly relegated to the Montenegrin Second League, and the two next lowest ranked teams play in Montenegrin First League playoffs.
OFK Titograd is a professional football club based in Podgorica, Montenegro. Founded in 1951, they play in the Third League of Montenegro. The team has one league trophy and two Montenegrin Cup trophies. OFK Titograd is a member of the European Club Association.
Fudbalski klub Lovćen is a football club based in Cetinje, Montenegro. It was founded on 20 June 1913. It was named after Mount Lovćen near Cetinje. Lovćen is the oldest football club in Montenegro and one of the oldest in Southeastern Europe. Today, Lovćen is a member of Montenegrin Second League. FK Lovćen is a part of Lovćen Cetinje sports society.
The Prva A liga, for sponsorships reasons named the Erste Liga, is the top-tier professional basketball league in Montenegro. It is the highest basketball division organized by the Basketball Association of Montenegro (KSCG). It was established in 2006. shortly after Montenegro declared its independence from Serbia and Montenegro.

The Montenegrin Men's Handball First League is the top men's team handball league in Montenegro. It is organized by the Handball Federation of Montenegro.
The 2006–07 Montenegrin First League season was the inaugural season of the league as Montenegro's top-tier football competition. Although the league existed before, it was previously a second-tier league, underneath the Serbo-Montenegrin First League. Upon the independence of Montenegro, and the establishment of a Montenegrin Football Association, the league became disassociated with the Serbo-Montenegrin league and thus was given its present position.
The Montenegrin Cup is the national football cup played in Montenegro, established in 2006. The winner of the cup is awarded a spot in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League if they have not already gained a spot in the UEFA Champions League.

Before the independence of Montenegro, football clubs from that country played in different competitions. From 1945 to 2006, Montenegrin club played in the leagues of SFR Yugoslavia, FR Yugoslavia and the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro.
The Montenegrin Derby is the main football match in Montenegro, between the teams from the two biggest Montenegrin cities. Rivals are FK Budućnost from Podgorica and FK Sutjeska from Nikšić, two most popular sports societies in Montenegro. The rivalry is present in football and basketball.

The 2017–18 Montenegrin First League was the 12th season of the top-tier football in Montenegro. The season began on 5 August 2017 and ended on 26 May 2018. Budućnost Podgorica are the defending champions.
Montenegrin Republic League was the third tier football league of SFR Yugoslavia. The top clubs were promoted to Yugoslav Second League.
The 1946 Montenegrin Republic League was inaugural season of Montenegrin Republic League. First edition of competition was qualifying tournament for the first season of Yugoslav First League. Also, it was the very first official competition in Montenegro after the World War II. The season began in April and ended in May 1946.
The 1946–47 Montenegrin Republic League was second season of Montenegrin Republic League. The season began in October 1946 and ended in May 1947.
