The Rocky Island Historic District is a historic district in the Apostle Islands in Ashland County, Wisconsin. It is composed of the Hadland, Benson, Edwards, Nelson, and Erickson fish camps, which were located on the eastern shore of Rocky Island. The district represents the historical significance of commercial fishing on Lake Superior, which was primarily conducted by Scandinavian immigrants. [2] The Rocky Island Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 3, 2008. [1]

Builders of the camps were Olaf Edwards, Christian Hadland, Charlie & Fred Benson, Julian Nelson, Mel & Martin Erickson, and others. [3]

Walrus Islands Archaeological site in Alaska, United States

The Walrus Islands are a group of craggy coastal islands in the Bering Sea, close to the northern shores of Bristol Bay, Alaska at the entrance to Togiak Bay. They are located 18 km to the east of Hagemeister Island, and are protected as the Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary by the state. A part of the island group is also of archaeological importance, with numerous deeply stratified sites covering 6,000 years of human use. For this reason, Crooked Island, Summit Island and Round Island were designated the Walrus Islands Archeological District, a National Historic Landmark District comprising 14 historical sites, in December 2016.

Hadland Fishing Camp United States historic place

The Hadland Fishing Camp is a historic fishing camp in the Apostle Islands of Ashland County, Wisconsin. Built in 1938, the camp is located on the eastern shore of Rocky Island and is part of the Rocky Island Historic District. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 18, 1977.

Architects of the National Park Service are the architects and landscape architects who were employed by the National Park Service (NPS) starting in 1918 to design buildings, structures, roads, trails and other features in the United States National Parks. Many of their works are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and a number have also been designated as National Historic Landmarks.

Smyrna Historic District United States historic place

Smyrna Historic District is a national historic district located at Smyrna, Kent County, Delaware. It encompasses 850 contributing buildings in the town of Smyrna. It includes the majority of residential, commercial, public and ecclesiastical buildings that pre-date 1920, the bulk of which were constructed in the mid-to-late 19th century. Notable buildings include the Cummins-Stockly House, Irishtown Tavern, Spruance House, John Cummins Mansion, A. G. Cummins, Sr. House, Governor William Temple Mansion, Daniel Cummins' Tavern and House, "Greybox," Delaware House, Jones' Drug Store, Smyrna/Clayton Masonic Building, the Peterson Building, Tilghman Building, Abraham Pierce Store, the "Colonial Hotel," Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Citizen's Hose Company No. 1, Benjamin Benson House (1834), Asbury Methodist Church, Ebenezer Cloak Mansion, and Mt. Olive Holiness Pentecostal (1876).

Banzai Cliff United States historic place

Banzai Cliff is a historic site at the northern tip of Saipan island in the Northern Mariana Islands, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Towards the end of the Battle of Saipan in 1944, hundreds of Japanese civilians and soldiers jumped off the cliff to their deaths in the ocean and rocks below, to avoid being captured by the Americans. Not far away, a high cliff named Suicide Cliff overlooks the coastal plain, and was another site of numerous suicides. At Banzai Cliff, some who jumped did not die and were captured by American ships.

Tobin Harbor Historic District United States historic place

The Tobin Harbor Historic District is a small resort community, consisting of 12 private camps and a fishery, scattered among several islands at the northeast end of Isle Royale near Rock Harbor. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019.
