The scholarships in Taiwan include scholarships for pursuing degrees (bachelor, master or PhD), academic exchange, conducting research, learning Mandarin and experiencing culture in Taiwan. They are mostly funded by the Taiwanese government, universities and Academia Sinica, but also by non-profit foundations.

Overview

The Taiwan Fellowships & Scholarships (TAFS) program is a joint governmental initiative (Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Ministry of Education (MOE), Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Economic Affairs) aimed to promote exchange and friendships between Taiwan and the global community. The TAFS comprises awards in three categories: scholarships for Degree, fellowships for research and Huayu (Mandarin) Enrichment Scholarships. Approximately 1,250 TAFS grants are provided annually for undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as researchers across the world to study or to conduct advanced research in Taiwan. [1]

PhD degrees

Taiwan International Graduate Program

Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP) is an English-language PhD program at Academia Sinica, Taiwan's foremost research institute for life sciences, physical sciences, humanities and social sciences. In the year 2016, there were 57 TIGP graduates and as of December, 2016, 537 students from 44 countries were enrolled in TIGP [3]

Taiwan Scholarship

In addition to bachelor's and master's degrees, the MOFA and MOE Taiwan Scholarships from the Taiwanese government are also available for PhD programs.

Short-term exchange

Fellowships are available for researchers from all fields. Some, however, are limited to only Taiwan studies and sinology. The TIGP International Internship Program is available for two-month research stay in Academia Sinica.

Learning Mandarin

Huayu Enrichment Scholarship is provided on a competitive basis to foreigners who want to learn the Mandarin language in one of the Mandarin study centers in Taiwan such as the Mandarin Training Center.

In 2021, the Hanyu BEST Program is provided for top selected Mandarin study centers in Taiwan to establish oversea Mandarin centers with partner university such as Chinese Language Center (CLC) of National Dong Hwa University (NDHU), which established Mandarin centers in Howard University and Oakland University. Founded in 1922 during the Japanese regime, it was first known as Taihoku High School under the Government-General of Taiwan before being renamed as Taiwan Provincial Teachers College in 1946, and subsequently restructured as a comprehensive university in 1994.

National Chengchi University is a public research university in Taipei. The university is also considered as the earliest public service training facility of the Republic of China. First established in Nanjing in 1927, the university was subsequently relocated to Taipei in 1954. It is considered to be one of the most prestigious and prominent universities in Taiwan. The university, abbreviated as NCCU, specializes in arts and humanities, mass media, linguistics and literature, social sciences, economics, management, politics, and international affairs programs. It is the only publicly funded university in Taiwan which provides courses in journalism, advertising, radio and television, diplomacy, and several languages which are not taught at other institutions in Taiwan. The name Chengchi means governance or politics, and refers to its founding in 1927 as a training institution for senior civil service for the Nanjing Nationalist government of the Republic of China. The university has strong ties with academic institutions like Academia Sinica, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, National Taiwan University and National Palace Museum.

The educational system in Taiwan is the responsibility of the Ministry of Education. The system produces pupils with some of the highest test scores in the world, especially in mathematics and science. Former president Ma Ying-jeou announced in January 2011 that the government would begin the phased implementation of a twelve-year compulsory education program by 2014.

National Chiao Tung University was a public research university located in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Established in 1896 as Nanyang Public School by an imperial edict of the Guangxu Emperor, it was one of China's leading universities. After the Chinese Civil War, NCTU was re-established by former Chiao Tung University faculty and alumni in Taiwan in 1958.

The International Chinese Language Program is an institution for intensive training in formal Mandarin, Taiwanese, Classical Chinese, and other varieties of Chinese. It is located in Gongguan, Taipei, on the main campus of National Taiwan University (NTU).

Mandarin Training Center is one of the world's oldest and most distinguished programs for Chinese as a second language study. It is run by National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) in Taipei, Taiwan and located at NTNU Daan Campus.

Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School is a public high school for boys located in Zhongzheng District, Taipei, Taiwan. The school was established in 1898 during the early years of Japanese rule. Originally named "No. 1 Taihoku High School" (臺北州立臺北第一中學校), it was the first public high school in Taiwanese history. CKHS requires the highest scores on the national senior high school entrance exams. As of July 2021, CKHS's alumni include 1 Nobel Prize laureate (Physics), the only ethnic Chinese Turing Award laureate, 1 Cannes Film Festival Award winner, 1 head of state, at least 5 members of the US National Academy of Sciences, and numerous scholars and public servants. Its female counterpart is the Taipei First Girls' High School.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language</span> Taiwans test of Mandarin proficiency for non-native speakers

The Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) is the standardized test of Taiwanese Mandarin language proficiency of Taiwan for non-native speakers such as foreign students. It is administered by the Steering Committee for the Test Of Proficiency-Huayu (SC-TOP). The committee is under the direction of the Republic of China's Ministry of Education. The test was formerly known as the TOP or Test Of Proficiency-Huayu.

The Chinese Culture University Mandarin Learning Center is a sub-division of Chinese Culture University, the largest institute of continuing education in Taiwan. The MLC is one of several satellite campuses of Chinese Culture University, located in the Daan District of Taipei City, with an enrollment of over 1000 foreign students in its Mandarin training program every year.

Chen Wen-tsuen is an ethnic Taiwanese computer scientist, a distinguished research fellow at the Academia Sinica and a lifelong national chair of the Ministry of Education, Taiwan. From 2006 to 2010, he was the president of the National Tsing Hua University, a premier research university in Taiwan.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">National Yang-Ming University</span> Former university in Taiwan

National Yang-Ming University was a research university located in Shipai, Beitou District, Taipei, Taiwan. It was known for research in the fields of Medicine, Life Sciences and Biotechnology. In the 2010 QS Asian Universities Rankings, Yang Ming University was placed 4th among universities in Taiwan and 2nd in the field of Life Science & Biomedicine. NYMU was one of the seven national research universities.

The MOFA Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES), is a competitively awarded international scholarship for studying the Mandarin language in Taiwan. The award is not limited to countries with diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

Mandarin Chinese is the primary formal Chinese language taught academically to Chinese Filipinos in Chinese Filipino schools and across other schools and institutions in the Philippines, especially as the formal written Chinese language.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">National Dong Hwa University</span>

National Dong Hwa University (NDHU) is a national research university located in Hualien, Taiwan. Established in 1994, NDHU is widely considered as the high potential research university and the most prestigious university in Eastern Taiwan by Liberty Times, THE, QS, U.S. News. NDHU offers sixth widest range of disciplines in Taiwan, including the sciences, engineering, computer science, environmental studies, oceanography, law, arts, design, humanities, anthropology, social sciences, education sciences, music, and business.

The Taiwan Scholarship is a scholarship for international students who possess prior excellent academic performance and good moral character. The program began in 2004 as the jointly established Scholarship Program of Taiwan funded by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Economic Affairs, and Ministry of Science and Technology of the Executive Yuan of the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan). Currently, there are four types of scholarship programs: MOE Scholarships, MOFA Scholarships, MOEA scholarships and NSC Scholarships.

The Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan was established in November 2005 by the Ministry of Education (Taiwan) and over 100 universities in Taiwan, and inaugurated formally in January 2006. Currently, the Foundation has a total of 119 member universities and colleges that are also its permanent member universities.

National Dong Hwa University Chinese Language Center is one of the most distinguished programs for Chinese as a second language study in Taiwan, which is run by National Dong Hwa University (NDHU) in Hualien, Taiwan. In 2019, NDHU CLC's students achieved 100% pass rate in TOCFL. In 2021, NDHU CLC founded two oversea Chinese language school at universities in the United States.
