Sfiso Norbert Buthelezi (born 1961) is a South African politician and member of the National Assembly of South Africa. [2] [3] He is a member of the country's ruling party, the African National Congress. [4]
Buthelezi was born in Mahlabathini, KwaZulu-Natal, in 1961. [5]
In 1981, at the age of 20, Buthelezi joined uMkhonto we Sizwe, the former paramilitary wing of the African National Congress. [6] He was arrested in 1983 and imprisoned at Robben Island (prison) for eight years until his release in 1991. [7]
From 1994 to 1999, Buthelezi served as an economic advisor to Jacob Zuma, who at that time was the member of the Executive Council (South Africa) for economic development in KwaZulu-Natal. [8] [9] He was also an adviser to Mathews Phosa during his premiership in Mpumalanga. [10]
In 1999, he became the Chief Operating Officer of Makana Investment Corporation. [11] That same year, then president Thabo Mbeki appointed him as the founding chairperson of the National Gambling Board. [12]
In 2005, Minister of Transport Jeff Radebe appointed Buthelezi to the board of the South African Rail Commuter Corporation (SARCC), later renamed the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), with Buthelezi serving as the first chairperson of PRASA from 2009 to 2014. [13]
Buthelezi was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Finance in April 2017, following a cabinet reshuffle by president Jacob Zuma, removing Pravin Gordhan as Minister of Finance and Mcebisi Jonas as Deputy Minister of Finance. [14]
After Jacob Zuma resigned as President of South Africa on 14 February 2018, his successor Cyril Ramaphosa reshuffled his cabinet, moving Buthelezi to the position of Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. [15]
Prince Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi was a South African politician and Zulu prince who served as the traditional prime minister to the Zulu royal family from 1954 until his death in 2023. He was appointed to this post by King Bhekuzulu, a son of King Solomon, who was a brother to Buthelezi's mother, Princess Magogo. Buthelezi was chief minister of the KwaZulu bantustan during apartheid and founded the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in 1975, leading it until 2019, becoming its president emeritus soon after that. He was a political leader during Nelson Mandela's incarceration (1964–1990) and continued to be so in the post-apartheid era, when he was appointed by Mandela as Minister of Home Affairs, serving from 1994 to 2004.
Nkosinathi Phiwayinkosi Thamsanqa Nhleko is a South African politician and former trade unionist from KwaZulu-Natal. He was the Minister of Police and Minister of Public Works in the second cabinet of President Jacob Zuma. After he was sacked from the cabinet in 2018, he served as a backbencher in the National Assembly until the 2019 general election.
