SkyTrain is a proposed automated people mover line meant to serve the city of Makati and Bonifacio Global City area in Taguig, Metro Manila. [1] Originally scheduled for completion in 2021, [2] as of March 2022, construction has yet to begin.
Infracorp Development Inc., a subsidiary of Alliance Global Group of Andrew Tan submitted an unsolicited proposal to build a people mover system which will link the Fort Bonifacio area in Taguig and the Guadalupe MRT station in Makati on October 26, 2017 to the Department of Transportation (DOTr). The proposal was officially endorsed by the DOTr in May 2018 and Infracorp was given "original proponent status" by the government agency. [3]
Following the DOTr's endorsement, the proposal is subject to review by the Investment Coordination Committee of the National Economic and Development Authority Board. [4]
After Infracorp was given "original proponent status" over the SkyTrain project, the firm began looking for an operations and maintenance partner, as well as the technology supplier. By June 2018, Infracorp has already received bids from firms based in Austria, China, France, and Japan. The company is set to make a decision regarding SkyTrain's operations and maintenance partner, and technology supplier by the end of 2018. [5]
The construction of the SkyTrain is projected to cost ₱3.5 billion and is set to commence within the first half of 2019. Infracorp will construct the people mover line for two years and plans to make the SkyTrain operational by the end of 2021. [6] Upon its completion, the SkyTrain's ownership will be transferred to the Philippine government but Infracorp shall be the sole operator of the people mover. [7]
The SkyTrain will use an automated cable-propelled people mover technology. [8] While it is described in the media as a 'monorail', cable-propelled people movers are not part of that transit type. Renderings show the trains to be nearly identical to the ones used in the Leitner-Poma Minimetro system installed in Miami International Airport’s E-Train.
The people mover will have two stations one in the Guadalupe area in Makati and another at the Uptown Bonifacio in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. The whole line will be about 2 kilometers (1.2 mi). [4]
The rail line is projected to have 60,000 to 100,000 daily ridership. [9]
There are plans to expand the proposed rail line that will run from the Guadalupe area in Makati to Uptown Bonifacio area in Taguig. Any additional stations shall be included in a second or third phase of construction. [5]
In February 2018, it was reported that Ayala Corporation is considering a partnership with Infracorp. Ayala reportedly plans to extend the SkyTrain to the Makati Central Business District or up to the Manila Light Rail Transit System Line 1 (LRT-1). [10] However at that time, Ayala has not started formal talks with Infracorp or its parent company, Alliance Global Inc regarding the SkyTrain project. [11] The expansion could benefit Ayala Corp's Circuit Makati in Makati and Arca South in Taguig. [5]
Makati, officially the City of Makati, is a highly urbanized city in the National Capital Region of the Philippines, known for being one of the leading financial centers in the country. As of 2013, the city has the highest concentration of multinational and local corporations in the Philippines. Major banks, corporations, department stores as well as foreign embassies are based in Makati. Makati is also known for being a major cultural and entertainment hub in Metro Manila. According to the 2020 census, it had a population of 629,616 people, making it the 47th most populous city in the country and 8th most populous in Metro Manila. Makati is one of the most densely populated city proper areas globally, ranking 8th worldwide and 2nd in the Philippines, after Manila, with a population density of 28,975 inhabitants per square kilometer.
Taguig, officially the City of Taguig, is a coastal city located in eastern shores of Metro Manila, the capital region of the Philippines. It is the fifth-most populous city in the country with a population of 1.2 million people. The city is one of the Philippines' cultural, financial, high-tech, entertainment and media centers with significant influence on commerce, health care, research, technology, education, politics, tourism, dining, art, fashion, and sports. Taguig is also an important center for the country's international diplomacy, hosting several embassies. The city also home to the headquarters of several major multinational corporations. Taguig has the fourth largest skyline in the Philippines, with 289 high-rises, 80 of which exceed 100 m (328 ft).
The Philippine Stock Exchange, Inc. is the national stock exchange of the Philippines. The exchange was created in 1992 from the merger of the Manila Stock Exchange and the Makati Stock Exchange. Including previous forms, the exchange has been in operation since 1927. The PSE's headquarters is located at the Philippine Stock Exchange Tower, located along the One Bonifacio High Street complex in Bonifacio Global City.
Rail transportation in the Philippines is currently used mostly to transport passengers within Metro Manila and provinces of Laguna and Quezon, as well as a commuter service in the Bicol Region. Freight transport services once operated in the country, but these services were halted. However, there are plans to restore old freight services and build new lines. From a peak of 1,100 kilometers (680 mi), the country currently has a railway footprint of 533.14 kilometers (331.28 mi), of which only 129.85 kilometers (80.69 mi) are operational as of 2024, including all the urban rail lines. Bonifacio Global City is a central business district and major financial hub located in Taguig, Metro Manila, Philippines. It is located 11 kilometers (6.8 mi) southeast of the capital city of Manila. The district experienced commercial growth following the sale of a 440 ha military base at Fort Bonifacio by the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA). The entire district used to be the part of the main Philippine Army camp.

The Metro Manila Subway, formerly known as the Mega Manila Subway (MMS) is an under-construction underground rapid transit line in Metro Manila, Philippines. The 33-kilometer (21 mi) line, which will run north–south between Valenzuela, Quezon City, Pasig, Taguig, Parañaque and Pasay, consists of 17 stations between the East Valenzuela and Bicutan stations. It will become the country's second direct airport rail link after the North–South Commuter Railway, with a branch line to Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
The Makati Intra-city Subway (MkTr) was a planned underground rapid transit line to be located in Makati, Metro Manila, that will link establishments across the city's business district. The construction of it was planned through a public-private partnership program between the Makati City Government and a private consortium headed by Philippine Infradev Holdings. Proponents of the subway are expected to begin construction by December 2018, and Makati Mayor Abigail Binay projects completion by 2025. The subway will cost $1.8 billion and is expected to accommodate 500,000 passengers daily. It will also have seven stations, with connections to the existing MRT Line 3 and Pasig River Ferry Service.
