Spencerian College was a private, for-profit career college in Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky. It was founded in 1892 as the Spencerian Commercial School, a private for-profit business school, by Enos Spencer. [1]
In June 2018, Spencerian College and Sullivan College of Technology and Design (formerly Louisville Technical Institute) were authorized by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to merge their programs and students into the regionally-accredited Sullivan University and cease operations as separate institutions. [2] [3] Since June 2018, degree and certificate programs from the former Spencerian College are included within Sullivan University's College of Allied Health and its College of Nursing.
In January 2013, prior to the purchase of Spencerian College by Sullivan University [4] , Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway filed a consumer-protection lawsuit against Spencerian College for alleged misrepresentation of job placement data. The suit alleges that Spencerian College knowingly and intentionally provided false job placement data to lure students "into student loan arrangements and to join their for-profit institution." The disparities between job placement numbers reported on the Spencerian College website and those reported to Spencerian College's institutional accrediting organization differed by as much as 40%, according to the suit [5] . As part of the purchase of Spencerian College, Sullivan University agreed to forgive $1.7 million in student loans made to 668 students between the years 2007 and 2011. [6]
DeVry University is a private for-profit university with its headquarters in Naperville, Illinois, and campuses throughout the United States. The school was founded in 1931 by Herman A. DeVry, as DeForest Training School and officially became DeVry University in 2002. As of September 16, 2019, DeVry reported an undergraduate enrollment of 14,163 and a graduate school enrollment of 4,032, for a total of 18,195 students.
ITT Technical Institute was a for-profit technical institute. Founded in 1969 and with approximately 130 campuses in 38 states of the United States, ITT Tech was one of the largest for-profit educators in the US before it closed in late 2016.
Sullivan University is a private for-profit university based in Louisville, Kentucky. It is licensed to offer certificates and diplomas, associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. According to the Kentucky Council, for the 2015–2016 academic year, 40% of Sullivan's full-time, first-time associate degree students received their degrees within three years.
WyoTech, formerly known as Wyoming Technical Institute, is a for-profit, technical college founded in Laramie, Wyoming in 1966. WyoTech provided training programs that prepared students for careers as technicians in the automotive and diesel industry.
Career Education Corporation (CECO) was a for-profit postsecondary higher education provider with campus-based and online programs, headquartered in Schaumburg, Illinois. The company's schools offer associate, bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and certificate programs in career-focused disciplines. In January 2020, the company changed its name to Perdoceo Education Corporation.
Chancellor University was a private, for-profit university located in metropolitan Cleveland, Ohio, United States. The school was founded in 1848 as Folsom's Mercantile College to teach basic bookkeeping and business skills. It underwent several changes of name and ownership during its history. The college closed on August 25, 2013 at the conclusion of the summer semester.
Corinthian Colleges, Inc. (CCi) was a large for-profit post-secondary education company in North America. Its subsidiaries offered career-oriented diploma and degree programs in health care, business, criminal justice, transportation technology and maintenance, construction trades, and information technology.
Everest University is an American private university based in Florida. Since 2015, it has been operated by nonprofit Zenith Education Group, since former for-profit owner Corinthian Colleges had to shut down its operations. It was founded in 1940 as Fort Lauderdale College of Business and Finance and later known as the Florida Metropolitan University, a name it held until 2007.
Everest College is a system of colleges in the United States, and with Wyotech, make up Zenith Education. It was until 2015 a system of for-profit colleges in the United States and the Canadian province of Ontario, owned and operated by Corinthian Colleges, Inc. In 2015, Corinthian ceased operating and filed for bankruptcy. While most Corinthian-owned colleges were closed in early 2015, Educational Credit Management Corporation (ECMC), a non-profit, took ownership of more than half of Corinthian Colleges' campuses, including many Everest College campuses. As of 2016, 19 ECMC-owned Everest locations remain in operation. At least 10 more campuses were closed or in the process of closing in 2016.
Westwood College was a private for-profit college owned by Alta Colleges Inc. with 15 campus locations in five states and online learning options. Westwood was nationally accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS). Since its inception in 1986, Westwood graduated more than 37,000 students. The college closed in March 2016.
Brown Mackie College was a system of for-profit colleges located in the United States. The colleges offered bachelor's degrees, associate degrees, and certificates in programs including early childhood education, information technology, health sciences, and legal studies. Brown Mackie's schools were most recently owned by Education Management Corporation (EDMC).

Founded in 1963 and operated as Owensboro Business College until 2001, Daymar College offers more than 35 career tracks in 22 different academic programs. The California Culinary Academy (CCA) was a for-profit school, and an affiliate of Le Cordon Bleu located in San Francisco, California. Danielle Carlisle established the school in 1977 to train chefs using the European education model. The original location on the corner of Fremont and Howard Street in the South of Market area of San Francisco, was located in the remodeled, top-floor, cafeteria in the Del Monte headquarters. The academy trained more than 15,000 people for restaurant careers through its 30-week baking and pastry chef program and 16-month culinary arts degree program. It was purchased by Career Education Corporation in 1999.
Education Management Corporation ("EDMC") was a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based operator of for-profit post-secondary educational institutions in the United States and Canada. The company was founded in 1962. At its peak in 2011, Education Management Corporation operated 110 schools through its higher education divisions: Argosy University, The Art Institutes, Brown Mackie College, and South University, and enrolled 158,300 students.
