The Type 636 and its successor Type 636A hydrographic survey ships is type of Chinese survey and research vessel designed to replace earlier Type 625 and Type 635 research vessels, and is currently in service with the People's Liberation Army Navy and Chinese Coast Guard. Type 636

Type 636 hydrographic survey ship and its successor Type 636A are both designed by of the 708th Institute of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), which is also more commonly known as China Shipbuilding and Oceanic Engineering Design Academy (中国船舶及海洋工程设计研究) Archived 2019-07-06 at the Wayback Machine nowadays. Special attention was given to vibration reduction measures and the internal noise generated by the ship itself was much lower than other ships of similar size. The ship was built by Wuhu Shipyard and entered service in August 1998. On November 16, 2011, it was transferred to Chinese Coast Guard. Specification: [5]

Type 636A

Type 636A is the successor of earlier Type 636. Construction of the first ship of Type 636A began at Wuhu Shipyard in May 2003 and there are [ clarification needed ] more than two dozen surveying systems installed on board. Originally named as Ocean (Haiyang, 海洋) 20, but subsequently changed to Zhu Kezhen. The second ship of Type 636A was originally named as Ocean (Haiyang, 海洋) 22, but subsequently changed to Qian Sanqiang. [6] Specification: [7] *

Construction begun in October 1977 and the ship was launched in October 1978, entering service with PLAN in December 1978. There are a total of twelve laboratories on board totaling 257 square meters. Deployment proved that the design was successful, and three more units were built for civilian use, named as Xiangyanghong 9, Xiangyanghong 14 and Xiangyanghong 16 respectively. However, on May 2, 1993, Xiangyanghong 16 was rammed and sunk by a Cypriot LNG carrier more than nine time of its size in the East China Sea near Jeju Island, with the loss of three crew members. The sister ships in civilian service are often tasked with military and paramilitary missions and thus frequently come under PLAN and Chinese Coast Guard control.

Type 814A spy ship with NATO reporting name Dadie(大谍, meaning Big Spy) is a type of Chinese spy ship in service with the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). Originally, a total of four ships were planned, but eventually, only one was completed due to the availability of newer designs.

Originally designed to replace earlier Type 614, Type 625 has been replaced by its follow-on Type 636, and has since either retired from active service of PLAN and transferred to civilian agencies.

Type 635 hydrographic survey ship is a series of hydrographic survey ships developed by China for its People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). More successful than Type 625 of the same era, Type 635 still remains active in PLAN after half a century of service, even after its successor Type 636 has entered service. Type 635 series in PLAN service are designated by a combination of two Chinese characters followed by three-digit number. The second Chinese character is Ce (测), meaning survey in Chinese, because these ships are classified as survey ship. The first Chinese character denotes which fleet the ship is service with, with East for East Sea Fleet, North for North Sea Fleet, and South for South Sea Fleet. However, pennant numbers may have changed due to the change of Chinese naval ships naming convention.

The Type 837 tug with the NATO reporting name Hujiu is a type of ocean-going tug that China developed for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). Out of a total of 20 ships built in the 1980s by the Wuhu shipyard, 18 are still in PLAN service and all of them still remain active as of the early 2010s. One ship was exported to Bangladesh in 1984, and another was sold in 1995.

Type 8105 naval trawler is a Chinese auxiliary ship of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).Type 8105 along with Type 792 and Type 8154 naval trawlers have all received NATO reporting name FT-14 AIT class,meaning Fishing Trawler - 14 Auxiliary Intelligence-gathering Trawler. After retiring from their original role of a spy ship, Type 8105 naval trawlers have been converted to auxiliary minesweepers and survey vessels, and kept in operational reserve of the Chinese navy.
