The Type 052 (NATO/OSD Luhu-class destroyer [3] is a class of destroyers developed in the People's Republic of China (PRC) for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). The Type 052 was an intermediate between the obsolescent Type 051 [4] and the modern Type 052B destroyers. [5] [6] They were the first PLAN destroyers powered by gas turbines, [6] and the first PLAN ships with modern combat direction systems (CDS). [4] They were also part of the first generation of PLAN warships armed with surface-to-air missiles in the form of the short-range Crotale (called HQ-7 in Chinese service.) [7]

Contents

The Type 052 used subsystems imported from the United States and the European Union. The embargo after the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre ended the supply of and support for those subsystems, limiting production to two ships [4] and likely affecting their operating efficiency due to system integration issues. [4] Afterward, China turned to Russia and Ukraine for technology. [8] [5]

Programme

The Type 052 was the first PLAN warship where the CDS was designed before the ship. [4] The CDS, possible the ZKJ-6 based on the Italian IPN-10 or IPN-20, [9] began development in 1983 and underwent land-based testing in December 1986. [4] Two ships were ordered in 1985, but delayed by export orders to Thailand. The first, Harbin , was laid down in November 1990 and commissioned in July 1994. Qingdao was commissioned in March 1996. [1]

In 2003, Harbin was refitted with a low radar profile 100mm gun turret in 2003; Qingdao followed in 2005. [1]

A major refit began in 2010 for Harbin and Qingdao in 2011 which included changes to sensors and weapons, gas turbine replacement, and some hull work. [1]

Design

Machinery

The ships were completed with different gas turbines due to the embargo; Harbin with two General Electric LM2500s from the United States, and Qingdao with two Zorya-Mashproekt DA80s from Ukraine. [2]

Sensors

The original sensors included the Type 518 air search radar, the Type 362 search radar, [10] and the French [11] DUBV-43 variable depth sonar. [10] These were replaced during the 2010 refit with the Type 517 radar, the Type 362 radar, and a linear towed array sonar respectively. [1]

Weapons

The ships are armed with an octuple HQ-7/Crotale launcher, and a total of 32 missiles. [1] France agreed to sell the missile systems in 1986, and they were delivered after October 1990. [12]

Four Type 76A twin 37 mm guns were installed at construction. They were removed during 2010 refit, and the aft pair replaced by a pair of Type 730 CIWS. [1]

Other

The CDS installed on the Type 052 is unclear. [4] [13] One ship may have received the Thomson-CSF TAVITAC; the PRC bought two TAVITACs from France in the 1980s. [14] The TAVITAC may be known as, or modified into, the ZKJ-5 CDS in PRC service. [9] The other ship may have received the ZKJ-6. [13] [9]

The quarterdecks were built open, and enclosed during the 2010 refit. [1]

The ships may have had severe survivability issues like earlier PLAN warships. Observations by foreign visitors to Harbin in March 1997 suggested limited damage control capability and crew safety features. [4]

Operational history

Qingdao participated in the PLAN's first cruise to circumnavigate Earth in 2002. German technicians were flown in to repair its diesel engines during the cruise. [11]

Tribal-class frigate Class of frigates built for the Royal Navy

The Type 81, or Tribal class, frigates were ordered and built as sloops to carry out similar duties to the immediate post war improved Black Swan-class sloops and Loch-class frigates in the Persian Gulf. In the mid 1960s the seven Tribals were reclassified as second class general-purpose frigates to maintain frigate numbers. After the British withdrawal from East of Suez in 1971 the Tribals operated in the NATO North Atlantic sphere with the only update the fitting of Seacat missiles to all by 1977, limited by their single propeller and low speed of 24 knots. In 1979–80 age and crew and fuel shortages saw them transferred to the stand-by squadrons; three were reactivated in 1982 during the Falklands War for training and guardship duties in the West Indies.

Type 82 destroyer Class of eight Royal Navy warships

The Type 82 or Bristol-class destroyer was a 1960s guided missile destroyer design intended to replace County-class destroyers in the Royal Navy. Originally eight warships were planned to provide area air-defence for the four planned CVA-01 aircraft carriers. They would also have been able to operate independently as modern cruisers "East of Suez".

Anshan-class destroyer

The Anshan-class destroyers were the People's Liberation Army Navy's (PLAN) first destroyers. They were ex-Soviet Gnevny-class destroyers purchased in the 1950s. The Chinese later added HY-2 anti-ship missiles and removed some of the torpedo tubes, and redesignated as Type 6607. All four ships of the class had been stricken by 1992.

Type 051 destroyer Class of guided missile destroyers fielded by the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army Navy

The Type 051 destroyer was a class of guided missile destroyers based on the hull of the Soviet Neustrashimy-class destroyer deployed by China. It was the first guided missile destroyer fielded by the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), and the first designed and built in China. 17 were built from 1970 to 1990; it was not until the 21st century that China would again build a class in such large numbers.

Type 051B destroyer Class of guided missile destroyers fielded by the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army Navy

The Type 051B destroyer is a class of destroyer built by the People's Republic of China. It consists of only one ship, Shenzhen (167). When Shenzhen was commissioned into the People's Liberation Army Navy Surface Force in 1998, it was then the largest surface combatant that China had ever built. It resembles in many ways an enlarged version of the Luhu-class destroyer, and is one of the first PLAN ships with a slope-sided hull to reduce radar signature. The Type 051B was succeeded by the domestic Type 052B destroyer, discounting the 4 Soviet-built Sovremenny-class destroyer that China purchased in the interim.
