Varanasi International Cricket Stadium is a currently in-construction cricket stadium in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. It's expected to be completed by December 2025. [1] The venue will have a seating capacity of 30,000 spectators which can be extended up to 40,000. [2] Upon completion, it will be the fourth international cricket stadium in Uttar Pradesh after Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow and Saifai International Cricket Stadium in Etawah.

Overview and design

As the venue is located in the holy city of Varanasi, its architectural design will draw inspiration from Lord Shiva, featuring distinctive elements like trident-shaped floodlights, crescent-shaped roof covers, ghat-steps like seating arrangements, Bilva-patra (Wood apple leaves) shaped metallic sheets on the facade and the media center will be shaped like a Damaru. [2] [3]

The venue will have a capacity of 30,000 spectators which could be expandable up to 40,000. The venue will also have 9 practice wickets in the main ground, advanced drainage system, one outdoor ground, sufficient parking space, a VVIP or VIP zone on the second floor of the south pavilion [4]

Development

It was announced in April 2023 that Varanasi will get a International cricket stadium. In August 2023, Larson and Turbo wins bid to construct the stadium. [5] The Government of Uttar Pradesh acquired a 30 acres (12 ha) land beside Ring Road Phase-2 in the Rajatalab area at a cost of ₹121 crore (US$14 million) for the stadium, while the construction cost is estimated to be ₹330 crore (US$40 million). [6]

On 23 September 2023, Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the stadium in the presence of cricket veterans like Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri and Dilip Vengsarkar, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath, key officials of BCCI like Roger Binny, Rajeev Shukla, Jay Shah and many others. The stadium is expected to be completed by December 2025. [7]

The venue will be well-connected to the city's airport, major railway stations and bus station.

It connects Gonda village on NH-35 in Chitrakoot district with Kudrail village on Agra–Lucknow Expressway in Etawah district. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid down the foundation stone of Bundelkhand Expressway on 29 February 2020 in Gonda village, Chitrakoot, and the expressway was inaugurated on 16 July 2022. Varanasi–Kolkata Expressway, also known as Varanasi–Ranchi–Kolkata Expressway, and NH-319B, is an approved 610 km (380 mi) long, six-lane, greenfield access-controlled expressway, which will connect the spiritual city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh with the capital of West Bengal, Kolkata, through the capital of Jharkhand, Ranchi. It will run almost parallel to the Grand Trunk Road or the Asian Highway 1, and will pass through four states–Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. The expressway is a part of Bharatmala Pariyojana, and it will reduce both travel time and distance, from 12-14 hours to only 6-7 hours, and from 690 km (430 mi) to 610 km (380 mi). It will start from Chandauli district in Uttar Pradesh, and will terminate near Uluberia, Howrah district, West Bengal.

Kashi ropeway is an under construction aerial cable car urban transit system in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. It will be the first public transport ropeway of India. It will be 3.75 km long with five stations connecting Varanasi Cantonment railway station to Godowlia Chowk. It is expected to open in May 2025.
