Elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) were held on 6 April 2021. 25 of the 28 elected seats in the Autonomous District Council are reserved for Scheduled Tribes. [1] [2] [3]

Contents

There were 865,041 eligible voters in the elections. The votes were counted on 10 April 2021 with a victory for the TIPRA-INPT alliance. [2] [4] [5] [6] The TIPRA party led alliance won 18 seats in the election while the BJP led alliance could win only 9 seats. [7] [8] [9] [10]

Campaign

The Left Front consisting of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, All India Forward Bloc and RSP declared its candidates list for 28 seats on 6 March 2021. [11] [12] The Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) announced it candidates list for 18 seats on 7 March 2021. [13] [14] The TIPRA of Maharaja Kirit Pradyot Deb Barman and its alliance party Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) announced their first list of candidates for 17 seats [15] and 5 seats respectively on 8 March 2021. [16] The Indian National Congress (INC) also announced its list of candidates for all 28 seats on 8 March 2021. [17]

Incidents

The total voting process was peaceful. However there were reports of minor disturbances in two constituencies, namely Budhjung Nagar-Wakkinagar and Amtali-Golaghati. The TIPRA accused the ruling BJP for creating the disturbance. [18]

Results

The votes were scheduled to be counted on 10 April 2021 and in the counting the TIPRA party won 16 seats with its alliance partner INPT winning 2 seats in the election while the BJP won 9 seats with 1 seat going to an Independent candidate. [7] [19] [20] [2] [21]

Pradyot Manikya Deb Barma is the current titular King and statesman from Tripura. He was born in New Delhi, and now resides in Agartala, Tripura. He also served as the editor of TNT-The Northeast Today. He is the current chairman of The Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance also known as TIPRA Motha. He is known as 'Bubagra' among his people and is one of the active voices for the rights of Indigenous Tripuri people of Tripura.

Elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) were held on 3 May 2010. On that day elections were held for 27 of the 28 elected seats in the Autonomous District Council. In one seat (Maharani-Chellagong) the election was countermanded, following the death of Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Ranjit Jamatia. 25 of the 28 elected seats in the Autonomous District Council are reserved for Scheduled Tribes.

The Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) is a regional political party in Tripura, India. It is a member of the National Democratic Alliance and North-East Democratic Alliance. The party was merged into the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) in 2001, However diverged out in 2009. The party is allied with BJP in the 2018 Tripura Legislative Assembly election and won eight seats out of eight contested seats. The party got 7.5% of the total votes polled. The BJP got 36 seats and with a total of 44 seats the BJP-IPFT coalition have two-thirds majority at the Legislative Assembly.

The politics of Tripura, a state in Northeast India, has been dominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Indian National Congress, the Tipra Motha Party, the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura and the Trinamool Congress.
