The Assam Gazette is a public journal of the Government of Assam [1] published weekly by the Department of Stationery and Printing. [2] As a public journal, the Gazette prints official notices from the government. The gazette is printed by the Government of Assam Press.

The book Assam Gazette [3] The Assam Gazette was first published in the year 1874. 1st to 9th issue of the Gazette was printed in Christian Missionary Press of Cherrapunjee. The 10th issue of the Assam Gazette was printed in Assam Secretariat Press at Shillong on 23 May in the year 1874.

History

Department of Printing and Stationery, Assam is situated at Bamunimaidam, Guwahati-21. Printing Press of Assam Govt. was established in the year of 1874 in the month of August at "Betten Hill" in Shillong. Initially the press was known as "Assam Secretariat Press". In the year of 1892 it is being changed to "Assam Secretariat Printing Department". Again in the year of 1921 name had been changed to "Assam Govt. Press". Which remained same till to-day.

In the year of 1954 the Government of Assam had taken a Cabinet Decision to start one Branch Press of Assam Govt. Press at Guwahati to do the Printing works of Gauhati High Court. According by as per Cabinet Decision in the year of 1954 on 14 November a branch of Assam Govt. Press was established at Guwahati in the campus of Guwahati Jail. After two years press had been shifted to a rented house at Rehabari, Guwahati. In that year the Stationery wings of the Department was incorporated.

Present Building of the Directorate of Printing and Stationery was completed in the year 1961 at Bamunimaidam, Guwahati-21 and it was inaugurated by the then Hon’ble Minister of Assam Late Rupnath Brahma, on 16 November 1961.

The First Director of the Directorate of Printing and Stationery was Late Rana Pratap Baruah (B.Sc., Printing Tech.). Directorate of Printing & Stationery is responsible for printing and publishing of the Assam Gazette. The Assam Gazette is published every Wednesday of the week.

In case of urgent and immediate nature of printing works and if Assam Govt. press is preoccupied with other urgent works, the concerned Department can get the work done by inviting tenders from eligible registered presses, subject to issuance of NOC from Directorate of Printing & Stationery.

Golaghat one of the largest subdivisions of the Indian state of Assam, later elevated to the position of a full–fledged district headquarter on 5 October 1987, is a city and a municipality and the seat of administrative operations of Golaghat district, besides being a twin city to Jorhat which is about 55 km away. Hiteswar Saikia was an Indian politician who served as the 10th chief minister of Assam for two terms, firstly from 28 February 1983 to 23 December 1985 and then from 30 June 1991 to 22 April 1996. He was the 1st Governor of Mizoram from 1987 to 1989 and the 6th Lieutenant Governor of Mizoram from 1986 to 1987. Rai Bahadur Surya Kumar Bhuyan MBE (1892–1964) was a writer, historian, educator, social activist, storyteller, essayist, professor and a poet from Assam. He has written many books on ancient history, stories, essays, biographies, etc. in the world of Assamese literature. He presided over the Asam Sahitya Sabha (1953) held at Shillong. He was the elected member of Rajya Sabha during 1952–53, and was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1956.

Government College Of Arts and Crafts Assam or "GCAC" is one of the oldest art colleges in North-East India. It offers Bachelor Of Fine Arts (Degree)(B.F.A.) to students of North-East India.

Pran Nath Luthra (1917–2000) was an Indian civil service officer and writer, best known for his services for the rehabilitation of the refugees in the Northeast India and his writings on his days of service. He was an adviser to the Governor of Assam and an additional secretary at the Ministry of Labour and Rehabilitation of the Government of West Bengal. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, in 1972.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sananta Tanty</span> Indian poet (1952–2021)

Sananta Tanty was an Indian poet of Assamese literature. Tanty was born to an Odia family in Kalinagar Tea Estate. Tanty completed his secondary education at a Bengali-medium school but continued his literary works in the mainland Assamese language. Tanty received numerous awards and distinctions, including the 2018 Sahitya Akademi Award for "Kailoir Dinto Amar Hobo", a collection of his poems.

Suchibrata Roychoudhury was an Assamese litterateur and poet, and the first female Judicial Magistrate of Assam as an Assam Civil Services officer. She received the Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize in 2001 for translating Suvira Jaiswal's The Origin and Development of Vaishnavism in India.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Asu Dev</span> A pioneer artist of Assam India

Asu Dev(আশু দেব), born as Ashutosh Deb Dhubri, Assam, India was a pioneer artist of Assam. He was a painter, sculptor and an Art Educator. During his lifetime he had worked as a Textile Designer in several Cotton Mills in Jessore and Khulna in Bangladesh, Ahmedabad, Surat, Kolkata, at the Janata College Titabor Assam and Assam Textile Institute Guwahati, Assam and at Weavers Training Centre in Dimapur Nagaland in the later part of his life. His distinguished style of painting, where he had experimented using fine and minute dots often like modern pixels, which was often addressed by art critics as pointillism. Asu Dev was a self taught artist who created his artworks from minute observation of the Nature and the working class, and his innate exposure to Srimanta Sankardeva the 15th–16th century Assamese saint-scholar, poet, playwright, artist and social-religious reformer. The miniature paintings from the Chitra Bhagawata and the traditional folk arts and culture of the region, becoming the prime subjects of his paintings. During his career spanning about fifty years of Artistic career dating to the 1930s, he had created around 180 Art works, mostly paintings, oil on canvas, water colour tempara, textile designs and motifs, illustrations, sketches, drawings and a few sculptures. In 1952, Asu Dev was among the first artists to hold, one man show in Assam.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Monita Borgohain</span>

Monita Borgohain, IAS, is the Secretary to the Govt. of Assam, Director of the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Regional Government Film and Television Institute, Secretary of the Jyoti Chitraban Film Studio, Festival Director of the Guwahati International Film Festival, and Producer of the feature film Xobdo Nixobdo Kolahol. Occasionally, she writes for journals, such as the Film Critics Circle of India Journal of Indian Cinema and the FIPRESCI-India journal.
